Theoretical grain-size thresholds and their application to accurate methods for paleointensity determination

Improved values of critical grain-size thresholds for magnetite and Fe have been obtained using a rigorous theoretical approach. The temperature dependence of these thresholds is interesting in that it indicates the existence of certain grains which, when cooled from above their blocking temperature, pass sequentially through the following magnetization states: superparamagnetic to single-domain to nonuniform magnetization. Such grains will yield correct paleointensities by the Wilson (1961) or Shaw (1974) method but not by the well-known method due to Thellier and Thellier (1959).

A high-voltage-isolated automated data acquisition system

A data acquisition system for electric-arc heated, high-temperature wind tunnel facilities has been developed; the high voltage isolation of the system exceeds 50 kV. A closed loop, optically coupled data system acquires transducer signals from high-temperature, arc-generated plasmas used for reentry testing. The data acquisition system monitors on-line tests, stores data on magnetic tape, and prints out a paper tape. The system has 400 data channels: 200 low-voltage programmable channels and 200 high-voltage sequential channels.

Airphoto assessment of changes in aquatic vegetation

Large scale, multiyear, color and color infrared aerial photographs were used to evaluate changes in aquatic vegetation that have accompanied a reduction in phosphorus inputs to a phosphorus-limited, eutrophic lake in New York State. The study showed that the distribution of emergent, floating and submersed vegetation could be determined with little or no concurrent ground data; that various emergent and floating types could be separated and, with limited field checks, identified; and that different submersed types are generally not separable. Major vegetative types are characterized by spectral and nonspectral features, and a classification is developed for compiling time-sequential vegetation maps.

A reliable dual-redundant sensor FDI system for the NASA F8C-DFBW aircraft

In this paper we outline the structure of a sensor failure detection and identification (FDI) system designed for the NASA F8C DFBW aircraft. The system is for use in a dual-redundant environment, and it takes maximal advantage of all functional and kinematic relationships among the sensed variables. The technique is reliable in that we have designed the system to account for a variety of unmodeled effects and have introduced a new concept - the quality sequential probability ratio (QSPR) - that provides a useful measure of our confidence in each test. The methodology used for determining detector parameters and the 'outer loop logic' for combining the various sources of information are described.

Absolute judgment for one- and two-dimensional stimuli embedded in Gaussian noise

This study examines the effect on human performance of adding Gaussian noise or disturbance to the stimuli in absolute judgment tasks involving both one- and two-dimensional stimuli. For each selected stimulus value (both an X-value and a Y-value were generated in the two-dimensional case), 10 values (or 10 pairs of values in the two-dimensional case) were generated from a zero-mean Gaussian variate, added to the selected stimulus value and then served as the coordinate values for the 10 points that were displayed sequentially on a CRT. The results show that human performance, in terms of the information transmitted and rms error as functions of stimulus uncertainty, was significantly reduced as the noise variance increased.

Flight to Mercury

The project development and active flight of the Mariner 10 deep-space probe mission is recounted in detail, with sequential blow-by-blow coverage. Early studies and speculation on the planet Mercury are reviewed, and the spin-orbit coupling and near-synchronous rotation of the planet are described. Use of Venus as a slingshot in a gravity-assist maneuver is described, and Mariner 10 records of Venus are shown. The three encounters of Mariner 10 with Mercury (March 1974, Aug. 1974, March 1975) are described in detail, with purposes, problems, mishaps, and glossy photographs recovered from Mariner 10 data. Information on the planet's magnetosphere, surface topography, inferred internal structure, and IR signature is provided, and the end-of-mission improvised solar-sail experiment is outlined.

Genesis of the Angra dos Reis and other achondritic meteorites

Major, minor, and trace element abundances were determined in seven Angra dos Reis samples, which included whole rocks, fassaite (clinopyroxene), olivine, and whitlockite separates, via sequential instrumental neutron activation analysis. The rare earth element abundance patterns and the trace element abundance patterns of this achondritic meteorite are discussed. A two-stage crystal-liquid fractionation model with source material containing olivine, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxine is presented for the genesis of Angra dos Reis. Multilinear regression analysis was used to estimate possible composition and properties of the parent magmas. Angra dos Reis was compared with other achondrites, cumulate eucrites and nakhlites in particular. It is thought that the unique Angra dos Reis could not be related to those achondrites by crystal-liquid fractionation of the same parent body.

Formulation of a methodology for power circuit design optimization

A methodology for optimizing power-processor designs is described which achieves optimization with respect to some power-processor characteristic deemed particularly desirable by the designer, such as weight or efficiency. Optimization theory based on Lagrange multipliers is reviewed together with nonlinear programming techniques employing penalty functions. The methodology, the task of which is to minimize an objective function subject to design constraints, is demonstrated with the aid of four examples: optimum-weight core selection for an inductor with a predetermined winding size, optimum-weight inductor design with a given loss constraint, optimum-loss inductor design with a given weight constraint, and a comparison of optimum-weight single- and two-stage input-filter designs with identical loss and other requirement constraints. Closed-form solutions for the first three examples are obtained by applying the Lagrange-multiplier method, but solutions for the last example are found numerically through the use of the sequential unconstrained minimization technique.

The computer for design and optimization

Computerized design using numerical optimization techniques is discussed and guidelines for writing analysis computer codes that can be readily coupled to optimization codes are presented. The following numerical optimization techniques are examined: random search, sequential unconstrained minimization, direct constrained optimization, and one-dimensional search. A number of design applications are considered including high speed airfoil lift maximization, the preliminary design of a wing, design of a planar tower for optimal geometry, and the conceptual design of a tactical fighter aircraft.

Removal of contaminant gases from an electrolytic urine pretreatment process

The effluent gas stream from an electrolytic urine pretreatment process was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy and wet chemical methods to determine its composition. The major constituents were identified as: hydrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, water vapor, and chlorine. The trace impurities were chlorinated light hydrocarbons, and a number of other organic impurities in the low ppm range. Several methods of removing all of the undesirable gases to levels acceptable for return to a space cabin atmosphere were investigated experimentally. A subsystem concept comprised of the following sequential unit processes and operations was successfully demonstrated: (1) raw urine scrubbing, (2) silica gel sorption, (3) dilution with cabin air, and (4) catalytic oxidation.

The radiation history of material returned by the Soviet automatic stations Luna 16 and Luna 20, according to track studies

Fission tracks formed by the vH (very heavy) nuclei group of solar and galactic cosmic rays have been studied in silicate minerals of the lunar regolith returned by the Luna 16 and Luna 20 unmanned spacecraft. It is shown that the material in the Luna 16 core sample, from a typical mare region of the lunar surface, has undergone stronger irradiation by cosmic rays than material returned a highland region by Luna 20. A low-irradiation component (about 10 percent of the total number of crystals) has been found in the Luna 20 core sample materials, which can possibly be attributed to material added to the main bulk of the regolith in the formation of the crater Apollonius C. From the track density distribution of crystals, as a function of depth in the regolith core sample, it follows that the process of formation of the upper layer of the regolith, both for the lunar mare and for the highland region, includes sequential layering of finely crushed crystalline matter and subsequent mixing of it by micrometeorite bombardment. A portion of the crystals with a very high track density may be a component added to the lunar surface from outer space.

Tripropellant Engine Study

The feasibility of modifying the space shuttle main engine (SSME) for dual mode operation was investigated. Various high power cycle engine configurations derived from the SSME were configurations that will allow sequential burning of LOX/hydrocarbon and LOX/hydrogen were studied in order to identify concepts that make maximum use of SSME hardware and best satisfy the dual mode booster engine system application. Engine cycles were formulated for LOX/RP-1, LOX/CH4, and LOX/C3H8 propellants. Flow rates and operating cycles were established and the adaptability of the major components of the SSME was evaluated.
