Early results from a prototype VLBI clock monitoring system

Four sets of experiments were conducted to measure the relative epoch offsets between atomic clocks in California, Australia, and Spain by means of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). The experiments were conducted using an incomplete R & D VLBI system with a number of inherent limitations. The results indicate that the measurement objective of epoch offset to 10 nanoseconds will be met. Tables show the measured offset, the residual to fit, and the square root Allan variance. Graphs show the rate change and the rate reset.

Development and evaluation of a prototype in-flight instrument flight rules (IFR) procedures trainer

An in-flight instrument flight rules (IFR) procedures trainer capable of providing simulated indications of instrument flight in a typical general aviation aircraft independent of ground based navigation aids was developed. The IFR navaid related instruments and circuits from an ATC 610J table top simulator were installed in a Cessna 172 aircraft and connected to its electrical power and pitot static systems. The benefits expected from this hybridization concept include increased safety by reducing the number of general aviation aircraft conducting IFR training flights in congested terminal areas, and reduced fuel use and instruction costs by lessening the need to fly to and from navaid equipped airports and by increased efficiency of the required in-flight training. Technical feasibility was demonstrated and the operational feasibility of the concept was evaluated. Results indicated that the in-flight simulator is an effective training device for teaching IFR procedural skills.

Prototype Ge:Ga detectors for the NASA-Ames cooled grating spectrometer

The detectors were fabricated from a Ge:Ga wafer from Eagle-Pitcher with a room temperature resistivity of approx. 12ohms cm. The wafer is approximately 2 inches in diameter and 0.061 inches thick. The contact material was ion implanted with Boron using 10 to the 14th power ions/sq cm at 25 Kev and 2 x10 to the 14th power ions/sq cm at 50 Kev. The crystal was then sputter-cleaned and metallized first with sputtered Ti and then sputter Au. In addition to the usual infrared measurements of responsivity and noise, measurements were made of the detectors' response to ionizing radiation.

Fabrication and testing of a prototype longwall face alignment system

Fabrication and testing of a laser system for instantaneous location of a longwall shearer are summarized. Calculations and measurements for the design of a laser based system for monitoring and controlling the trajectory of the shearing machine as it progresses along the longwall face are reported. An early version was fabricated by employing simple mechanical contrivances and a standard miners lamp. It is concluded that the advantages of the early version is the ability to test the longwall face without approval from the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Prototype microprocessor controller

A microcomputer controller for STDN antennas was developed. The microcomputer technology reduces the system's physical size by the implementation in firmware of functions. The reduction in the number of components increases system reliability and similar benefit is derived when a graphic video display is substituted for several control and indicator panels. A substantial reduction in the number of cables, connectors, and mechanical switches is achieved. The microcomputer based system is programmed to perform calibration and diagnostics, to update the satellite orbital vector, and to communicate with other network systems. The design is applicable to antennas and lasers.

Fuel economy and exhaust emissions characteristics of diesel vehicles: Test results of a prototype Fiat 131 NA 2.4 liter automobile

The vehicle was tested on a chassis dynamometer over selected drive cycles and steady-state conditions. Two fuels were used, a U.S. no. 2 diesel and a European diesel fuel. The vehicle was tested with retarded timing and with and without an oxidation catalyst. Particulate emission rates were calculated from dilution tunnel measurements and large volume particulate samples were collected for biological and chemical analysis. It was determined that while the catalyst was generally effective in reducing hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide levels, it was also a factor in increasing particulate emissions. Increased particulate emission rates were particularly evident when the vehicle was operated on the European fuel which has a high sulfur content.

NGC 7714 - The prototype star-burst galactic nucleus

New X-ray, ultraviolet (IUE), optical, and radio (VLA) observations are presented for the bright nucleus galaxy NGC 7714. All data are explainable as resulting from intense star-formation activity in this nucleus - a star burst. The X-ray and radio luminosities are explained by supernova remnants arising from the massive stars, and approximately 10,000 supernova remnants are required in a volume of 280 pc radius. It is thought that NGC 7714 is typical of a significant class of emission-line galaxies. It is pointed out that individual supernovae should be observable in this, or similar nuclei, because they are expected to occur at rates approaching one per year.

Management and development of local area network upgrade prototype

Given the situation of having management and development users accessing a central computing facility and given the fact that these same users have the need for local computation and storage, the utilization of a commercially available networking system such as CP/NET from Digital Research provides the building blocks for communicating intelligent microsystems to file and print services. The major problems to be overcome in the implementation of such a network are the dearth of intelligent communication front-ends for the microcomputers and the lack of a rich set of management and software development tools.

Construction and performance characteristics of a prototype NBS/GPS receiver

The construction and performance characteristics of a low-cost, high-accuracy GPS C/A receiver are reviewed. The receiver takes advantage of a simultaneous common view of the same satellites, which could allow time transfer with accuracies on the order of 10 ns or less for baselines as large as 3000 km. Frequency can be measured to better than one part in 10 to the 14th. The software and the receiver are configured to be fully automatic with a Z80A microprocessor setting the amplitude for the lock loops of the receiver and setting the synthesizer with corrects for Doppler shift. The microprocessor can calibrate a 0.1 ns built-in time interval counter.

Development of a prototype automatic controller for liquid cooling garment inlet temperature

The development of a computer control of a liquid cooled garment (LCG) inlet temperature is descirbed. An adaptive model of the LCG is used to predict the heat-removal rates for various inlet temperatures. An experimental system that contains a microcomputer was constructed. The LCG inlet and outlet temperatures and the heat exchanger outlet temperature form the inputs to the computer. The adaptive model prediction method of control is successful during tests where the inlet temperature is automatically chosen by the computer. It is concluded that the program can be implemented in a microprocessor of a size that is practical for a life support back-pack.
