Study of CO2 sorbents for extravehicular activity

Portable life support equipment was studied for meeting the requirements of extravehicular activities. Previous studies indicate that the most promising method for performing the CO2 removal function removal function were metallic oxides and/or metallic hydroxides. Mgo, Ag2, and Zno metallic oxides and Mg(OH)2 and Zn(OH)2 metallic hydroxides were studied, by measuring sorption and regeneration properties of each material. The hydroxides of Mg and Zn were not regenerable and the zinc oxide compounds showed no stable form. A silver oxide formulation was developed which rapidly absorbs approximately 95% of its 0.19 Kg CO2 Kg oxide and has shown no sorption or structural degeneration through 22 regenerations. It is recommended that the basic formula be further developed and tested in large-scale beds under simulated conditions.

Gamma-ray observations of the galactic centre.

Review of observation data obtained with a portable gas-Cerenkov gamma-ray telescope flown twice from Parana, Argentina (31.8 deg S), to search for gamma radiation from the galactic center. The angular resolution of this detector is not good enough to resolve the source structure controversy, i.e. whether the gamma radiation is coming from point sources or from a diffuse source along the galactic plane. Comparisons with observation data of other investigators are presented and discussed.

A test technique for measuring lightning-induced voltages on aircraft electrical circuits

The development of a test technique used for the measurement of lightning-induced voltages in the electrical circuits of a complete aircraft is described. The resultant technique utilizes a portable device known as a transient analyzer capable of generating unidirectional current impulses similar to lightning current surges, but at a lower current level. A linear relationship between the magnitude of lightning current and the magnitude of induced voltage permitted the scaling up of measured induced values to full threat levels. The test technique was found to be practical when used on a complete aircraft.

Stress wave riveting

The stress wave riveter deforms the rivet material by a high amplitude stress wave. Thus, the entire rivet is set in motion radially. The rivet expands rapidly and impacts the hole surface before the rivet tail begins to form. Unlike the oversqueezed rivets, therefore, it sets up uniform interference without distortion in the skins. Furthermore, the radial velocity is so high (over 200 in./sec) that upon impact with the hole surface it deforms the surface plastically. This is especially effective in aluminum skins. Thus the SWR combines the advantages of plastically deforming the hole and the economic advantage of a relatively nonprecision hole and inexpensive rivets like those used in oversqueezing. The additional advantage SWR offers is that it is a portable tool.

EVA crew workstation provisions for Skylab and Space Shuttle missions

A synopsis of scheduled extravehicular activities (EVA) for a nominal Skylab mission is presented with an overview of EV workstation equipment developed for the program. Also included are the unprogrammed extravehicular activities and supporting equipment that was quickly developed and retrofitted in a series of successful operations to salvage the crippled Skylab Cluster during the Skylab 1 Mission. Because EVA appears to be a requirement for the Space Shuttle Program, candidate EV workstations are discussed in terms of effective and economical Shuttle payload servicing and maintenance. Several such concepts, which could provide a versatile, portable EV support system, are presented.

Radio interferometry for international study of the earthquake mechanism

Consideration of the possibility of developing an improved technique for measuring crustal deformations over distances of hundreds to thousands of kilometers to even intercontinental distances. Attention is focused on the uses of very long baseline interferometry in the structuring of a transportable radio interferometer system capable of high-accuracy three-dimensional earth surveying. In particular, the essential elements of a system called astronomical radio interferometric earth surveying are described. This system involves the use of a pair of antennas, one fixed and one portable, which simultaneously receive random radio signals emitted from an extragalactic radio source. A combination of a readily transportable small-diameter dish for use during a limited period at a remote site with a larger-diameter antenna with a better receiver is recommended.

3-D multilateration for measurement of earth crustal deformation and network densification

Discussion of how range and range-difference data types can make possible precise three-dimensional measurement of ground station positions and the position of an artificial signal source, without explicit dependence upon the signal source trajectory. An effective strategy for such measurement is to combine the multilateration approach with a VLBI system using natural radio sources. The VLBI methods would provide a coarse grid of three-dimensional benchmark locations on a regional and global scale. Multilateration stations would then occupy these coarse grid locations and provide a means for highly portable, relatively low-cost units to then densify networks on a regional and local scale. Because a multilateration approach can make use of strong artificial radio sources, it makes possible the use of relatively low-cost, highly mobile stations. Such mobile stations are virtually essential for three dimensional surveying in heavily urbanized areas or in rugged terrain.
