Solar-generated quasi-biennial geomagnetic variation

The existence of highly correlated quasi-biennial variations in the geomagnetic field and in solar activity is demonstrated. The analysis uses a numerical filter technique applied to monthly averages of the geomagnetic horizontal component and of the Zurich relative sunspot number. Striking correlations are found between the quasi-biennial geomagnetic variations determined from several magnetic observatories located at widely different longitudes, indicating the worldwide nature of the obtained variation. The correlation coefficient between the filtered Dst index and the filtered relative sunspot number is found to be -0.79 at confidence level greater than 99% with a time lag of 4 months, solar activity preceding the Dst variation. The correlation between the unfiltered data of Dst and those of the sunspot number is also high with a similar time lag. Such a time lag has not been discussed in the literature, and a further study is required to establish the mode of sun-earth relationship that gives this time delay.

Unsteady flow in a supersonic cascade with subsonic leading-edge locus

Linearized theory is used to predict the unsteady flow in a supersonic cascade with subsonic axial flow velocity. A closed-form analytical solution is obtained by using a double application of the Wiener-Hopf technique. Although numerical and semianalytical solutions of this problem have already appeared in the literature, this paper contains the first completely analytical solution. It has been stated in the literature that the blade source should vanish at the infinite duct resonance condition. The present analysis shows that this does not occur. This apparent discrepancy is explained in the paper.

Global Earth Response to Loading by Ocean Tide Models

Mathematical and programming techniques to numerically calculate Earth response to global semidiurnal and diurnal ocean tide models were developed. Global vertical crustal deformations were evaluated for M sub 2, S sub 2, N sub 2, K sub 2, K sub 1, O sub 1, and P sub 1 ocean tide loading, while horizontal deformations were evaluated for the M sub 2 tidal load. Tidal gravity calculations were performed for M sub 2 tidal loads, and strain tensor elements were evaluated for M sub 2 loads. The M sub 2 solution used for the ocean tide included the effects of self-gravitation and crustal loading.

Calculation of the transient motion of elastic airfoils forced by control surface motion and gusts

The time-domain equations of motion of elastic airfoil sections forced by control surface motions and gusts were developed for the case of incompressible flow. Extensive use was made of special functions related to the inverse transform of Theodorsen's function. Approximations for the special cases of zero stream velocity, small time, large and time are given. A numerical solution technique for the solution of the general case is given. Examples of the exact transient response of an airfoil are presented.

Reformulation of Possio's kernel with application to unsteady wind tunnel interference

An efficient method for computing the Possio kernel has remained elusive up to the present time. In this paper the Possio is reformulated so that it can be computed accurately using existing high precision numerical quadrature techniques. Convergence to the correct values is demonstrated and optimization of the integration procedures is discussed. Since more general kernels such as those associated with unsteady flows in ventilated wind tunnels are analytic perturbations of the Possio free air kernel, a more accurate evaluation of their collocation matrices results with an exponential improvement in convergence. An application to predicting frequency response of an airfoil-trailing edge control system in a wind tunnel compared with that in free air is given showing strong interference effects.

Stability of the stratifield cylindrical annulus flow

The linear stability analysis for the stratified flow between two rotating circular cylinders is formulated. Two approaches for the stability analysis are presented. The first approach results in an algebraic eigenvalue problem, while the second results in an initial value problem for the perturbation function. The advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are discussed and a preferable numerical solution technique is outlined.

A conservative implicit finite difference algorithm for the unsteady transonic full potential equation

An implicit finite difference procedure is developed to solve the unsteady full potential equation in conservation law form. Computational efficiency is maintained by use of approximate factorization techniques. The numerical algorithm is first order in time and second order in space. A circulation model and difference equations are developed for lifting airfoils in unsteady flow; however, thin airfoil body boundary conditions have been used with stretching functions to simplify the development of the numerical algorithm.

Boundary-fitted coordinates for regions with highly curved boundaries and reentrant boundaries

A procedure was developed using the differential equation approach for generating boundary fitted coordinates for regions with highly curved boundaries as well as reentrant boundaries, such as those encountered in breaking surface waves. The resulting coordinates are nearly orthogonal and can provide adequate resolution even in the reentrant region. Consistent treatment of end boundaries and the use of a systematic initialization scheme and advanced implicit numerical solution techniques make the procedure highly efficient. The method developed for implicit enforcement of the periodicity boundary condition should be beneficial in the analysis of turbomachinery flow applications.

Optimum structural design with plate bending elements - A survey

A survey is presented of recently published papers in the field of optimum structural design of plates, largely with respect to the minimum-weight design of plates subject to such constraints as fundamental frequency maximization. It is shown that, due to the availability of powerful computers, the trend in optimum plate design is away from methods tailored to specific geometry and loads and toward methods that can be easily programmed for any kind of plate, such as finite element methods. A corresponding shift is seen in optimization from variational techniques to numerical optimization algorithms. Among the topics covered are fully stressed design and optimality criteria, mathematical programming, smooth and ribbed designs, design against plastic collapse, buckling constraints, and vibration constraints.

Visible light scatter measurements of the Advanced X-ray Astronomical Facility /AXAF/ mirror samples

NASA is studying the properties of mirror surfaces for X-ray telescopes, the data of which will be used to develop the telescope system for the Advanced X-ray Astronomical Facility. Visible light scatter measurements, using a computer controlled scanner, are made of various mirror samples to determine surface roughness. Total diffuse scatter is calculated using numerical integration techniques and used to estimate the rms surface roughness. The data measurements are then compared with X-ray scatter measurements of the same samples. A summary of the data generated is presented, along with graphs showing changes in scatter on samples before and after cleaning. Results show that very smooth surfaces can be polished on the common substrate materials (from 2 to 10 Angstroms), and nickel appears to give the lowest visible light scatter.

Solar wind electron densities from Viking dual-frequency radio measurements

Simultaneous phase coherent, two-frequency measurements of the time delay between the earth station and the Viking spacecraft have been analyzed in terms of the electron density profiles from 4 solar radii to 200 solar radii. The measurements were made during a period of solar activity minimum (1976-1977) and show a strong solar latitude effect. The data were analyzed with both a model independent, direct numerical inversion technique and with model fitting, yielding essentially the same results. It is shown that the solar wind density can be represented by two power laws near the solar equator proportional to r exp -2.7 and r exp -2.04. However, the more rapidly falling term quickly disappears at moderate latitudes (approximately 20 deg) leaving only the inverse-square behavior.

Exact triple integrals of beam functions

Definite triple integrals encountered in applying the Galerkin method to the problem of heat and mass transfer across rectangular enclosures are discussed. Rather than evaluating them numerically, the technique described by Reid and Harris (1958) was extended to obtain the exact solution of the integrals. In the process, four linear simultaneous equations with triple integrals as unknowns were obtained. These equations were then solved exactly to obtain the closed form solution. Since closed form representations of this type have been shown to be useful in solving nonlinear hydrodynamic problems by series expansion, the integrals are presented here in general form.

Earth rotation from a simultaneous reduction of LLR and LAGEOS laser ranging data

As the techniques of lunar and artificial satellite laser ranging mature, emphasis is being placed upon the use of these observations to monitor the earth's rotation. It is important to note, however, that at the present time neither technique alone can furnish all three components of this rotation to an accuracy which surpasses those results obtained from classical techniques. The present study represents the first stages of an investigation which has the objective to combine Lageos satellite and lunar laser ranging observations. It is hoped that the proper implementation of such a process might eliminate the shortcomings inherent in each technique, while accentuating the advantages of each. Attention is given to data and model compatibilities, analysis techniques, and numerical results. The presented results are indicative of the great progress which has been realized recently concerning an appropriate combination of Lageos and lunar laser ranging results

Directivity of planar array feeds for satellite reflector applications

Array-fed reflector antennas are used extensively in today's contour and multiple beam satellite antennas. To determine the directivity of these antennas theoretically, the total radiated power of the array feed must be accurately computed. In this paper, a closed-form expression for the radiated power is obtained for arrays with the well-known (cos theta q-type element patterns. The formulation is general, and takes into account polarization, nonsymmetric E- and H-plane element patterns, nonuniform element spacings and arbitrary complex excitation coefficients. Selective numerical data are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of this result. Comparisons are made with the available results obtained using direct numerical integration techniques, and with other available data based on less general formulations. Excellent agreement is observed for all cases. In particular, data are presented on the directivity of seven-element cluster feeds used in multiple beam designs, and an array feed for producing a contour beam covering the United States Eastern Time Zone (ETZ).

DE 102 - A numerically integrated ephemeris of the moon and planets spanning forty-four centuries

It is pointed out that the 1960's were the turning point for the generation of lunar and planetary ephemerides. All previous measurements of the positions of solar system bodies were optical angular measurements. New technological improvements leading to immense changes in observational accuracy are related to developments concerning radar, Viking landers on Mars, and laser ranges to lunar corner cube retroreflectors. Suitable numerical integration techniques and more comprehensive physical models were developed to match the accuracy of the modern data types. The present investigation is concerned with the first integrated ephemeris, DE 102, which covers the entire span of the historical astronomical observations of usable accuracy which are known. The fit is made to modern data. The integration spans the time period from 1411 BC to 3002 AD.
