Dynamics and thermodynamics of the 𝑆 = $\frac{5}{2}$ almost Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet K 2⁢ Mn⁢(SeO 3 ) 2

Here, we report calorimetric, magnetic, and neutron scattering studies on an 𝑆 = 5/2, nearly Heisenberg triangular-lattice antiferromagnet K 2 ⁢Mn⁢(SeO 3 ) 2 with weak XXZ easy-axis anisotropy. Multiple magnetic phases are identified, including a noncollinear Y phase in zero field, a field-induced collinear 𝑚 = 1/3 magnetization plateau, and a high-field V phase. In the Y phase, the magnetic excitation spectrum exhibits both single-magnon excitations and an extended high-energy continuum. Both features are well described by nonlinear spin wave theory. In the field-induced phases, complex effects of the spectrum renormalization even for large 𝑆 = 5/2 material are clearly detectable. These results underscore the essential role of magnon-magnon interactions in the dynamics of large-𝑆 Heisenberg spin systems on a triangular lattice.

Evidence for chiral superconductivity on a silicon surface

Tin adatoms on a Si(111) substrate with a one-third monolayer coverage form a two-dimensional triangular lattice with one unpaired electron per site. These electrons order into an antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating state, but doping the Sn layer with holes creates a two-dimensional conductor that becomes superconducting at low temperatures. Although the pairing symmetry of the superconducting state is currently unknown, the combination of repulsive interactions and frustration inherent in the triangular adatom lattice opens up the possibility of a chiral order parameter. Here we study the superconducting state of Sn/Si(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy and quasiparticle interference imaging. Here we find evidence for a doping-dependent superconducting critical temperature with a fully gapped order parameter, the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking and a strong enhancement in zero-bias conductance near the edges of the superconducting domains. Although each individual piece of evidence could have a more mundane interpretation, our combined results suggest the possibility that Sn/Si(111) is an unconventional chiral d-wave superconductor.

Reversible plasmonic switching in a graphene nanoresonator loaded with a core – shell quantum dot

A model of an all-plasmonic switch based on a graphene waveguide integrated with a stub nanoresonator loaded with a quantum dot is considered. Using the full-wave numerical simulation, it is shown that successive on/off switching of the control surface plasmon – polariton wave at the input of the waveguide leads to a change in the phase of the signal plasmon – polariton wave in the nanoresonator by π. This causes reversible switching of the device operation regime – from almost complete blocking to stable transmission of the signal plasmon – polariton wave through the waveguide. The effect is implemented at rates of ∼0.5 THz for infrared electromagnetic waves localised in a device with a switching region of 40 × 20 nm. (paper)

Signatures of coupling between spin waves and Dirac fermions in YbMnBi 2

Here, we present inelastic neutron scattering measurements of magnetic excitations in YbMnBi 2 , which reveal features consistent with a direct coupling of magnetic excitations to Dirac fermions. In contrast with the large broadening of magnetic spectra observed in antiferromagnetic metals such as the iron pnictides, here the spin waves exhibit a small but resolvable intrinsic width, consistent with our theoretical analysis. The subtle manifestation of spin-fermion coupling is a consequence of the Dirac nature of the conduction electrons, including the vanishing density of states near the Dirac points. Accounting for the Dirac fermion dispersion specific to YbMnBi 2 leads to particular signatures, such as the nearly wave-vector-independent damping observed in the experiment.

Nanoscale dynamics during self-organized ion beam patterning of Si. I. Ar + bombardment

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) is used to investigate the fluctuation dynamics during self- organized nanopatterning of silicon by Ar + bombardment at 65° polar angle. Rich structure is observed in the development of the correlation dynamics as seen in the evolving correlation time τ(q || ) and fluctuation relaxation exponent n(q || ). Furthermore, on length scales of the ripple structure, local structure becomes ever more long lived as coarsening progresses. In addition, τ (q || ) develops a peak on length scales corresponding to the ripple wavelength. As patterning progresses, correlation times become asymmetric between the positive and negative directions, suggesting the possibility of different dynamics on the slopes facing toward and away from the ion beam. Relaxation exponents show evolution from linear dynamics at early times to compressed exponential relaxation at low wave numbers and stretched exponential relaxation at high wave numbers. Compressed exponential behavior is reminiscent of stress relaxation processes observed in glasses.

Lattice collective modes from a continuum model of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Here, we show that the insulating states of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene support a series of collective modes corresponding to local particle-hole excitations on triangular lattice sites. Our theory is based on a continuum model of the magic angle flat bands. When the system is insulating at moiré band filling ν = -3, our calculations show that the ground state supports seven low-energy modes that lie well below the charge gap throughout the moiré Brillouin zone, one of which couples strongly to THz photons. The low-energy collective modes are faithfully described by a model with a local SU(8) degree of freedom in each moiré unit cell that we identify as the direct product of spin, valley, and an orbital pseudospin. Apart from spin and valley-wave modes, the collective mode spectrum includes a low-energy intraflavor exciton mode associated with transitions between flat valence and conduction band orbitals.

Spin wave Hamiltonian and anomalous scattering in NiPS 3

Here, we report a comprehensive spin wave analysis of the semiconducting honeycomb van der Waal antiferromagnet NiPS 3 . Using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering, we map out the full Brillouin zone and fit the observed modes to a spin wave model with rigorously defined uncertainty. We find that the third-nearest-neighbor exchange J 3 dominates the Hamiltonian, a feature which we fully account for by ab initio density functional theory calculations. We also quantify the degree to which the threefold rotation symmetry is broken and account for the Q = 0 excitations observed in other measurements, yielding a spin exchange model which is consistent across multiple experimental probes. We also identify a strongly reduced static ordered moment and reduced low-energy intensity relative to the linear spin wave calculations, signaling unexplained features in the magnetism which requires going beyond the linear spin wave approximation.

Possible Superconductivity with a Bogoliubov Fermi Surface in a Lightly Doped Kagome U(1) Spin Liquid

Whether the doped t-J model on the Kagome lattice supports exotic superconductivity has not been decisively answered. In this paper, we propose a new class of variational states for this model and perform large-scale variational Monte Carlo simulation on it. The proposed variational states are parameterized by the SU(2)-gauge-rotation angles, as the SU(2)-gauge structure hidden in the Gutzwiller-projected mean-field ansatz for the undoped model is broken upon doping. These variational doped states smoothly connect to the previously studied U(1) π-flux or 0-flux states, and energy minimization among them yields a chiral noncentrosymmetric nematic superconducting state with 2 × 2-enlarged unit cell. Moreover, this pair density wave state possesses a finite Fermi surface for the Bogoliubov quasi particles. We further study experimentally relevant properties of this intriguing pairing state.

Searching for high-frequency gravitational waves with phonons

The gravitational wave (GW) spectrum at frequencies above a kHz is a largely unexplored frontier. We show that detectors with sensitivity to single-phonon excitations in crystal targets can search for GWs with frequencies, 1 THz ≲ f ≲ 100 THz , corresponding to the range of optical phonon energies, 1 meV ≲ ω ≲ 100 meV . Such detectors are already being built to search for light dark matter (DM), and therefore sensitivity to high-frequency GWs will be achieved as a byproduct. We begin by deriving the absorption rate of a general GW signal into single phonons. We then focus on carefully defining the detector sensitivity to monochromatic and chirp signals, and compute the detector sensitivity for many proposed light DM detection targets. The detector sensitivity is then compared to the signal strength of candidate high-frequency GW sources, e.g., superradiant annihilation and black hole inspiral, as well as other recent detector proposals in the 1 MHz ≲ f ≲ 100 THz frequency range. With a judicious choice of target materials, a collection of detectors could optimistically achieve sensitivities to monochromatic signals with h 0 ∼ 10 − 23 − 10 − 25 over 1 THz ≲ f ≲ 100 THz . Multifidelity validation of digital surrogates using variable-density turbulent mixing models

In this study, ensembles of experimental data are presented and utilized to compare and validate two models used in the simulation of variable-density (Atwood = 0.22), compressible turbulent mixing. Though models of this kind (Reynolds averaged NavierStokes and large-eddy simulations) have been validated extensively with more canonical flows in previous studies, here the present approach offers novelty in the complexity of the geometry, the ensemble-based validation, and the uniformity of the computational framework on which the models are tested. Moreover, all experimental and computational tasks were completed by the authors which has led to a tightly coupled experimental configuration with its “digital twin.” The experimental divergent-shock-tube facility and its data acquisition methods are described and replicated in simulation space. A 2D Euler model which neglects the turbulent mixing at the interface is optimized to experimental data using a Gaussian process. This model then serves as the basis for both the 2D RANS and 3D LES studies that make comparisons to the mixing-layer data from the experiment. A relatively simple RANS model is shown to produce good agreement with experimental data only at late flow development times. The LES ensembles generally show good agreement with experimental data but display sensitivity to the characterization of initial conditions. Resolution-dependent behavior is also observed for certain higher-order statistics of interest. Overall, the LES model successfully captures the effects of divergent geometry, compressibility, and combined nonlinear instabilities inherent to the problem. The successful prediction of mixing width and its growth rate highlight the existence of three distinct regimes in the development of the instability, each with similarities to previously studied instabilities.

PIP2-BD: GeV Proton Beam Dump at Fermilab's PIP-II Linac

The PIP-II superconducting RF linac is currently under construction at Fermilab and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. PIP-II is capable of operating in a continuous-wave mode and can concurrently supply 800 MeV protons to a mega-watt, GeV-scale beam dump facility and to LBNF/DUNE. Designs for proton accumulator rings are being studied to bunch the PIP-II protons into the short pulses needed for neutrino and low-mass dark matter experiments. PIP2-BD is a proposed 100-ton LAr scintillation-only experiment, whose detector design is inspired by CENNS-10 and CCM, that would have world-leading sensitivities to BSM physics, including low-mass dark matter produced in the PIP-II proton beam dump.

Emergent properties of magnons coupled to microwave photons (Final Technical Report)

Studying the emergent properties of hybrid quantum material platforms holds great promise for advancing quantum technologies and transforming our ability to control quantum mechanical interactions. A key development in recent years is the recognition that magnons – the elementary quanta of spin waves – can serve as fundamental building blocks in quantum systems. Understanding the mechanisms behind the generation and control of hybrid quasiparticles based on magnons could pave the way for engineering new materials for quantum coherent processing and quantum computing. This research project focused on the precise control of light-matter interactions in magnetic hybrid systems and nanostructures, where light is carried by microwave photons and matter by magnons in engineered magnetic metamaterials. Furthermore, we investigated hybridized magnon interactions in magnetic nanostructures and devices. To this end, the project has developed new measurement techniques and systematically studied novel material systems for efficient magnon-photon coupling. A key focus was uncovering the fundamental mechanisms governing magnon-photon and magnon-phonon interactions – critical for utilizing magnons as coherent information transducers between carriers. Specifically, this research addressed: 1. Investigate the dispersion and collective properties of magnon hybrid systems in new material systems. 2. Develop magnonic hybrids with non-zero wavevectors and achieve effective control of magnon-polariton properties through engineered magnonic behaviors. 3. Determine how spin-orbit torques interact with electromagnetic fields in the strong coupling regime. This work generated new insights into the physics of magnonic hybrid systems and their emergent properties by broadening the range of material platforms and measurement techniques used to study magnon-photon and magnon-magnon coupling. The findings deepen our understanding of magnon-polaritons and lay the groundwork for novel spintronic devices with potential applications in quantum information science.

The Nontrivial Vacuum Structure of an Extended $t\bar{t}$ BEH (Higgs) Bound State

In a recent reformulation of top-quark condensation for the Brout-Englert-Higgs boson, we introduced an extended internal wave-function, $ϕ(r)$. We show how this leads to a manifestly Lorentz invariant formalism, where the absence of ``relative time'' is a gauge invariance of the bilocal field theory. This dictates a novel and nontrivial Lorentz invariant vacuum structure for the BEH boson, the relativistic generalization of a condensed matter state such as a BCS or Bose-Einstein condensate.

Amplification of primordial perturbations from the rise or fall of the inflaton

The next generation of cosmic microwave background, gravitational wave, and large scale structure, experiments will provide an unprecedented opportunity to probe the primordial power spectrum on small scales. An exciting possibility for what lurks on small scales is a sharp rise in the primordial power spectrum: this can lead to the formation of primordial black holes, providing a dark matter candidate or the black holes observed by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration. In this study we develop a mechanism for the amplification of the small-scale primordial power spectrum, in the context of single-field inflation with a step-like feature in the inflaton potential. Specifically, we consider both the upward and the downward step in the potential. We also discuss the possibility of the strong coupling between perturbations because the rapid changes of the potential derivatives with the time-dependent field value, caused by the step-like feature, could make the coupling stronger. As a result, we find that the perturbations can remain weakly coupled yet sufficiently enhanced if the step realizes the rapid changes of the potential derivatives in some fraction of an e-fold, Script O(P R 1/2) ≲ ΔN < 1, where P R is the power spectrum of the curvature perturbation at that time. We also discuss the PBH formation rate from the inflaton trapping at the local minimum, which can occur in the potential with an upward step.

Entanglement Generation in Weakly Driven Arrays of Multilevel Atoms via Dipolar Interactions

We investigate the driven-dissipative dynamics of multilevel atomic arrays interacting via dipolar interactions at subwavelength spacings. Unlike two-level atoms in the weakly excited regime, multilevel atoms can become strongly entangled. Here, the entanglement manifests as the growth of spin waves in the ground-state manifold and survives after turning off the drive. We propose the 2.9 μ⁢m transition between 3 P 2 ↔ 3 D 3 in 88 Sr with 389 nm trapping light as a platform to test our predictions and explore many-body physics with light-matter interactions.

The Terahertz Dynamics of an Aqueous Nanoparticle Suspension: An Inelastic X-ray Scattering Study

We used the high-resolution Inelastic X-ray Scattering beamline of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory to measure the terahertz spectrum of pure water and a dilute aqueous suspension of 15 nm diameter spherical Au nanoparticles (Au-NPs). We observe that, despite their sparse volume concentration of about 0.5%, the immersed NPs strongly influence the collective molecular dynamics of the hosting liquid. We investigate this effect through a Bayesian inference analysis of the spectral lineshape, which elucidates how terahertz transport properties of water change upon Au-NP immersion. In particular, we observe a nearly complete disappearance of the longitudinal acoustic mode and a mildly decreased ability to support shear wave propagation.

Sneutrino tribrid inflation, metastable cosmic strings and gravitational waves

Here, we present a successful realization of sneutrino tribrid inflation model based on a gauged U(1)_B-L extension of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). A single interaction term involving the B-L Higgs field and the right-handed neutrinos serves multiple purposes. These include the generation of heavy Majorana masses for the right-handed neutrinos to provide an explanation for the tiny neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism, a realistic scenario for reheating and non-thermal leptogenesis with a reheat temperature as low as 10 6 GeV, and a successful realization of inflation with right-handed sneutrino as the inflaton. The matter parity which helps avoid rapid proton decay survives as a Z 2 subgroup of a U(1) R-symmetry. Depending on the choice of model parameters yields the following predicted range of the tensor to scalar ratio, 3 x 10 -11 ≲ r≲ 7x 10 -4 (6 x 10 -7 ≲ r ≲ 0.01), and the running of the scalar spectral index, -0.00022 ≲ dn_s/dln k ≲ -0.0026 (-0.00014 ≲ dn_s/dln k ≲ 0.005), along with the B-L breaking scale, 3 x 10 14 ≲ M/ GeV≲ 5 x 10 15 (6 x 10 15 ≲ M/ GeV≲ 2 x 10 16 ), calculated at the central value of the scalar spectral index, n_s =0.966, reported by Planck 2018. The possibility of realizing metastable cosmic strings in a grand unified theory setup is briefly discussed. The metastable cosmic string network admits string tension values in the range 10 -8 ≲ Gμ s ≲ 10 -6 , and predicts a stochastic gravitational wave background lying within the 2-σ bounds of the recent NANOGrav 12.5-yr data.
