Metamorphoses of ONAV console operations: From prototype to real time application

The ONAV (Onboard Navigation) Expert System is being developed as a real time console assistant to the ONAV flight controller for use in the Mission Control Center at the Johnson Space Center. Currently the entry and rendezvous systems are in verification, and the ascent is being prototyped. To arrive at this stage, from a prototype to real world application, the ONAV project has had to deal with not only AI issues but operating environment issues. The AI issues included the maturity of AI languages and the debugging tools, what is verification, and availability, stability, and the size of the expert pool. The environmental issues included real time data acquisition, hardware stability, and how to achieve acceptance by users and management.

Computer integrated documentation

The main technical issues of the Computer Integrated Documentation (CID) project are presented. The problem of automation of documents management and maintenance is analyzed both from an artificial intelligence viewpoint and from a human factors viewpoint. Possible technologies for CID are reviewed: conventional approaches to indexing and information retrieval; hypertext; and knowledge based systems. A particular effort was made to provide an appropriate representation for contextual knowledge. This representation is used to generate context on hypertext links. Thus, indexing in CID is context sensitive. The implementation of the current version of CID is described. It includes a hypertext data base, a knowledge based management and maintenance system, and a user interface. A series is also presented of theoretical considerations as navigation in hyperspace, acquisition of indexing knowledge, generation and maintenance of a large documentation, and relation to other work.

A real-time navigation monitoring expert system for the Space Shuttle Mission Control Center

The ONAV (Onboard Navigation) Expert System has been developed as a real time console assistant for use by ONAV flight controllers in the Mission Control Center at the Johnson Space Center. This expert knowledge based system is used to monitor the Space Shuttle onboard navigation system, detect faults, and advise flight operations personnel. This application is the first knowledge-based system to use both telemetry and trajectory data from the Mission Operations Computer (MOC). To arrive at this stage, from a prototype to real world application, the ONAV project has had to deal with not only AI issues but operating environment issues. The AI issues included the maturity of AI languages and the debugging tools, verification, and availability, stability and size of the expert pool. Finding the forest in the trees. The challenge of combining diverse environmental data

Development of analytical and functional guidelines to help researchers and technicians engaged in interdisciplinary research to better plan and implement their supporting data management activities is addressed. An emphasis is on the projects that involve both geophysical and ecological issues. Six case studies were used to identify and to understand problems associated with collecting, integrating, and analyzing environmental data from local to global spatial scales and over a range of temporal scales. These case studies were also used to elaborate the common barriers to interfacing data of disparate sources and types. A number of lessons derived from the case studies are summarized and analyzed.

MHD Energy Bypass Scramjet Performance with Real Gas Effects

The theoretical performance of a scramjet propulsion system incorporating an magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) energy bypass scheme is calculated. The one-dimensional analysis developed earlier, in which the theoretical performance is calculated neglecting skin friction and using a sudden-freezing approximation for the nozzle flow, is modified to incorporate the method of Van Driest for turbulent skin friction and a finite-rate chemistry calculation in the nozzle. Unlike in the earlier design, in which four ramp compressions occurred in the pitch plane, in the present design the first two ramp compressions occur in the pitch plane and the next two compressions occur in the yaw plane. The results for the simplified design of a spaceliner show that (1) the present design produces higher specific impulses than the earlier design, (2) skin friction substantially reduces thrust and specific impulse, and (3) the specific impulse of the MHD-bypass system is still better than the non-MHD system and typical rocket over a narrow region of flight speeds and design parameters. Results suggest that the energy management with MHD principles offers the possibility of improving the performance of the scramjet. The technical issues needing further studies are identified.

Life Cycle Cost Growth Study for the Discovery and New Frontiers Program Office

The D&NF Program Office LCC Management Study provides a detailed look at the drivers underlying cost overruns and schedule delays for five D&NF missions. While none of the findings are new, the study underlines the importance of continued emphasis on sound project management techniques: a clean project management structure with a clear definition of roles and responsibilities across the various partners in a project, an understanding of institutional standards and procedures and any differences among the partners, and the critical need for a comprehensive IMS that can be used easily and routinely to identify potential threats to the critical path. The study also highlights the continuing need for realistic estimates of the total LCC. Sufficient time and resources must be allocated early in a project to ensure that the appropriate trade studies and analyses are performed across all aspects of a mission: spacecraft, ground system, operations concept, and fault management, to ensure that proposed and confirmed costs truly reflect the resource requirements over the entire mission life cycle. These studies need to include a realistic review of the assumptions underlying the use of new technologies, the integration of heritage and new hardware and software into the total mission environment, and any development and test savings based on heritage technology and lessons learned. Finally, the LCC Management Study stresses the need to listen to, carefully consider, and take positive action regarding the issues raised during reviews by the expert review teams.

Peter Waterman and his scientific legacy

Peter C. Waterman, a giant figure in the theory of electromagnetic, acoustic, and elastic wave scattering, passed away on 3 June, 2012. In view of his fundamental contributions, which to a large degree have guided the progress of these disciplines over the past five decades and affected profoundly the multifaceted research published in the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer (JQSRT), we felt that it would be appropriate to solicit papers for a special issue of JQSRT commemorating Peter Waterman's scientific legacy. This initiative was endorsed by the JQSRT management and has resulted in a representative collection of high-quality papers which have undergone the same peer scrutiny as any paper submitted to JQSRT.

Initial Evaluation of CropManage Decision-Support Model for Vineyard ET Estimation

The CropManage(CM) decision-support web application was originally developed by U.C. Cooperative Extension to support evapotranspiration (ET) based irrigation scheduling and nutrient management of cool-season vegetables. The model uses prescribed crop phenology curves to develop daily estimates of fractional green canopy cover (Fc) within the field. Periodic Fc observations acquired by ground-based methods or imported from NASA’s Satellite Irrigation Management Support (SIMS) can be used to adjust the prescribed timeseries for such factors as weather anomalies or non-standard agronomic practice, as needed. Fc is then converted to daily crop coefficient (fraction of reference ET) values. The crop coefficient is combined with reference evapotranspiration, collected by the California Irrigation Management Information System, to derive daily ET estimates for the given field. Irrigation runtime recommendations are issued for a given date based on total ET since the last irrigation event (less any rainfall), and corrected for distribution uniformity of the water delivery system. In this project, CM was adapted to vineyards by adding sub-models to account for early-season depletion of stored soil moisture, cover crop presence, and intentional water stress. An initial trial was performed on a Central Coast winegrape vineyard, where an eddy covariance tower measured daily ET during from May-Dec 2020. Total ET for the period showed strong agreement between the tower-based measurements (443 mm) and the CM model (431 mm). The model tended to overestimate cumulative ET during mid-June by up to 30 mm (about 15%) and later underestimated cumulative ET by as much as 65 mm (about 23%) in late September, suggesting that additional model calibration is needed to improve simulation of within-season variability. Results will be reported for trials on additional vineyard sites conducted during the 2021 season.
