Generalized pseudopotential approach for electron-atom scattering.

A generalized many-electron pseudopotential approach is presented for electron-neutral-atom scattering problems. A calculation based on this formulation is carried out for the singlet s-wave and p-wave electron-hydrogen phase shifts with excellent results. We compare the method with other approaches as well as discuss its applications for inelastic and rearrangement collision problems.

A general relaxation method for inverse solution of the full radiative transfer equation.

The relaxation method for the inverse solution of the full radiative transfer equation is generalized to solve for all atmospheric parameters which appear in the integrand as functions or functionals, without any a priori information related to the expected solution. The method is illustrated by examples in the earth's atmosphere for the determination of water vapor mixing ratio profiles from observations in the 6.3-micron band.

Generalized multi-dimensional sampling theory and applications in optical systems.

Summary of the generalized sampling theory developed by Peterson (1963) and others, which treated multidimensional impulse-modulation periodic sampling, applicable to any multidimensional process. Particular attention is given to the two-dimensional case (N = 2) for which applications in optical systems are proposed. The efficiency of sampling geometries, and digital holography and sampling theory are considered.

Computer analysis of general linear networks using digraphs.

Investigation of the application of digraphs in analyzing general electronic networks, and development of a computer program based on a particular digraph method developed by Chen. The Chen digraph method is a topological method for solution of networks and serves as a shortcut when hand calculations are required. The advantage offered by this method of analysis is that the results are in symbolic form. It is limited, however, by the size of network that may be handled. Usually hand calculations become too tedious for networks larger than about five nodes, depending on how many elements the network contains. Direct determinant expansion for a five-node network is a very tedious process also.

A generalized theory for the design of contraction cones and other low speed ducts

A generalization of the Tsien method of contraction cone design is described. The design velocity distribution is expressed in such a form that the required high order derivatives can be obtained by recursion rather than by numerical or analytic differentiation. The method is applicable to the design of diffusers and converging-diverging ducts as well as contraction cones. The computer program is described and a FORTRAN listing of the program is provided.

X-ray sources in the general direction of the galactic center

Spectra were measured in the range 1.5 to 35 keV from six low galactic latitude sources near the direction of the galactic center and were found to be generally consistent with thermal emission and, as a rule, to be depleted of low energy photons. An interpretation of the latter observation based on interstellar absorption places these sources toward the central region of the galaxy and sets their X-ray luminosity at or = 10 to the 38th power ergs/sec for each. The extended source 2U 1743-29 was observed in near coincidence with the galactic center; the observation supports a power law spectrum and rejects a blackbody interpretation of the emission from this source.

A general relaxation theory of simple liquids

A relatively simple relaxation theory to account for the behavior of liquids under dynamic conditions was proposed. The general dynamical equations are similar in form to the phenomenological relaxation equations used in theories of viscoelasticity, however, they differ in that all the coefficients of the present equations are expressed in terms of thermodynamic and molecular quantities. The theory is based on the concept that flow in a liquid distorts both the radial and the velocity distribution functions, and that relaxation equations describing the return of these functions to their isotropic distributions, characterizing a stationary liquid, can be written. The theory was applied to the problems of steady and oscillatory shear flows and to the propagation of longitudinal waves. In all cases classical results are predicted for strain rates, and an expression for the viscosity of a liquid, simular to the Macedo-Litovitz equation, is obtained.

General test plan redundant sensor strapdown IMU evaluation program

The general test plan for a redundant sensor strapdown inertial measuring unit evaluation program is presented. The inertial unit contains six gyros and three orthogonal accelerometers. The software incorporates failure detection and correction logic and a land vehicle navigation program. The principal objective of the test is a demonstration of the practicability, reliability, and performance of the inertial measuring unit with failure detection and correction in operational environments.

Design of the UCLA general circulation model

An edited version is reported of notes distributed at the Summer Workshop on the UCLA General Circulation Model in June 1971. It presents the computational schemes of the UCLA model, along with the mathematical and physical principles on which these schemes are based. Included are the finite difference schemes for the governing fluid-dynamical equations, designed to maintain the important integral constraints and dispersion characteristics of the motion. Also given are the principles of parameterization of cumulus convection by an ensemble of identical clouds. A model of the ground hydrology, involving the liquid, ice and snow states of water, is included. A short summary is given of the scheme for computing solar and infrared radiation transfers through clear and cloudy air.

General considerations for structural inspection of older aircraft

Generalized considerations for structural inspections needed to maintain airworthiness of older aircraft are reviewed. Recommendations are made to account for accumulated service usage by counting flights rather than flight hours, to inspect structures made of flaw-sensitive materials more frequently than those made of flaw-tolerant materials, and to inspect structures having little redundancy more frequently than those having more redundancy. Occasional destructive inspections of high-time aircraft are suggested as being useful, but expensive, sources of either continued confidence or impending problems.

Protection Against Hearing Loss in General Aviation Operations, Phase II

An inflight evaluation of four aural protectors is presented. The hearing protection devices studied were ear muffs, plastic ear plugs, rubber ear plugs, and wax ear plugs. It is concluded that ear plugs are satisfactory for providing adequate sound attenuation in general aviation aircraft. However, two problems were found in the use of ear plugs; comfort and interference with cabin communications.

Ground and flight experience with a strapdown inertial measuring unit and a general purpose airborne digital computer

Ground and flight tests were conducted to investigate the problems associated with using a strapdown inertial flight data system. The objectives of this investigation were to develop a three axis inertial attitude reference system, to evaluate a self-alignment technique, and to examine the problem of time-sharing a general purpose computer for the several tasks required of it. The performance of the strapdown platform/computer system that was developed was sufficiently accurate for the tasks attempted. For flights on the order of 45 minutes duration, attitude angle errors of + or -.035 radian (+ or -2 deg) in all axes were observed. Laboratory tests of the self-alignment technique gave accuracies of + or -.00075 radian in pitch and roll axes and + or -0.0045 radian in the yaw axis. Self-alignment flight results were inconsistent, since a stable solution was not obtained on windy days because of aircraft rocking motions.

A generalized geologic map of Mars

A generalized geologic map of Mars has been constructed largely on the basis of differences in the topography of the surface. A number of topographic features on Mars whose form is highly diagnostic of their origin are shown. Of particular note are the shield volcanoes and lava plains. In some areas, the original features have been considerably modified by subsequent erosional and tectonic processes. These have not, however, resulted in homogenization of the planet's surface, but rather have emphasized its variegated character by leaving a characteristic imprint in specific areas. The topography of the planet, therefore, lends itself well to remote geologic interpretation.
