Tooling assembly and method for explosively forming features in a thin-walled cylinder

The present invention provides a method of explosively forming a helical tube from at least one thin-walled cylinder using a tooling assembly. The method includes inserting the at least one thin-walled cylinder into a die of the tooling assembly. The die surrounds the at least one thin-walled cylinder and includes an interior surface that defines a helical thread pattern. The method further includes surrounding the at least one thin-walled cylinder and the die with a casing of the tooling assembly. A cavity is defined by the casing and the thin-walled cylinder. The method further includes positioning an explosive charge within the cavity. The method additionally includes at least partially submerging the tooling assembly. The method further includes detonating the explosive charge. As a result, the at least one thin-walled cylinder is formed into a helical tube that corresponds with helical thread pattern of the interior surface of the die.

Understanding Microscopic Mechanisms of LeTID and LID and their Unifying Features by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance

LID degradation involves not only creation of ~ 10^12 cm^-3 recombination centers, but also ~ 10^16 cm^-3 shallow negative-U traps. In Ga-doped Si, LID EPR defects don't appear, but some traps are still created. LeTID: Si DB and H-hyperfine EPR signatures. We postulate that the defect responsible for LeTID is a partially hydrogenated (multivacancy) with a Si dangling bond and H in the vicinity. O involvement is possible yet unclear. We prove that H is related to the structure of the LeTID defect with isotope experiments and its EPR signal is comparable and linear with the Si DB signal upon LeTID degradation. Working on simulating these results with DFT to obtain more detailed defect structure.

Heat flux micro coolers having multi-stepped features and fluid wicking

A cooler device includes a cold plate and a manifold with fluid wicking structure. The cold plate includes an array of bonding posts and an array of fluid channels. Each bonding post of the array of bonding posts has a first height and is in contact with the manifold with fluid wicking structure. Each fluid channel of the array of fluid channels has a second height that is less than the first height. The array of fluid channels include a MIO secondary wick structure. The array of bonding posts is orthogonal to the array of fluid channels. The manifold with fluid wicking structure includes a plurality of spacer elements and a plurality of mesh layers. Each one of the plurality of spacer elements alternate with each one of the plurality of mesh layers in a stacked arrangement.

Panel Session 34: US DOE Featured Site: Savannah River Operations Office: 70 Years of Service

The Savannah River Site celebrates its 70. anniversary on November 28, 2020. On this date in 1950, President Harry S. Truman requested the Dupont Company to design, build and operate what was then known as the Savannah River Plant in response to the Soviet Union's detonation of its first atomic weapon, which set the Cold War into motion. During the 1950's, six South Carolina towns were relocated for the construction of SRS and by 1953, the 310 square mile site was complete. Nearly 40,000 workers were employed t build five nuclear reactors and support facilities, two chemical separations plants, heavy water extraction plant, nuclear fuel and target fabrication facility tritium extraction facility and waste management facilities. SRS played a key role in winning the Cold War and for seven decades, SRS has been a leader within the DOE complex. Today, the site supports environmental stewardship and maintains the nation's nuclear deterrent while ensuring the safekeeping and disposal of domestic and international nuclear materials. The site continues to support the nation's nuclear defense as it explores new potential NNSA missions. SRS has a proud 70- year history and looks forward to a future of service as a national asset and strong community partner. The session was kicked off with a video message from Secretary of Energy, Dan Brouillette, who thanked employees past and current for their efforts. The video also provided an overview of the history and future of the Site. This panel provided an overview of the Savannah River Site's 70 years of service (history, challenges, opportunities, and future) presented by the SRS's Senior leadership and the local Aiken, South Carolina Mayor. Panelists with presentations: US DOE Secretary Dan Brouillette's Overview of DOE and SRS - A Legacy of 70 Years of Service (Amy Boyette); 70 Years of Service (Michael Budney); 70 Years of Service (Stuart MacVean); SRS Liquid Waste (Thomas Foster); National Nuclear Security Administration (Nicole Nelson-Jean)

Combustion Feature Characterization using Computer Vision Diagnostics within Rotating Detonation Combustors

Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) theoretically achieve pressure gain by continuously propagating detonation waves in a cylindrical annulus. Research aims to implement them in gas turbines for improved propulsion and power generation efficiency. Current diagnostic methods, such as point measurements and optical diagnostics, face limitations due to high data acquisition rates required to analyze rapid detonation interactions. In contrast, image classification and time series classification achieve real-time capabilities with rates of 4 and 5 Hz, respectively. Object detection offers the highest time-step resolution at 20 μsec, while real-time methods require longer resolutions of 80 msec, highlighting the advancements in diagnostic capabilities for RDEs.

3D printed features on nuclear fuel cladding for optimized heat transfer

A nuclear fuel cladding with improved thermomechanical properties is provided. The nuclear fuel cladding includes a double-walled construction having inner and outer hexagonal sidewalls. The inner sidewall and the outer sidewall are spaced apart from each other to form a cooling channel therebetween, and the inner sidewall surrounds a nuclear fuel and is spaced apart from the nuclear fuel by a small gap. Helical fins extend into the cooling channel to interconnect the inner sidewall and the outer sidewall. Resilient fingers extend toward the nuclear fuel through the small gap to comply with variations in the size of the nuclear fuel due to fabrication tolerances as well as thermal expansion and swelling of the nuclear fuel, for example UO 2 , when undergoing fission. The nuclear fuel cladding is formed according to an additive manufacturing process, for example laser powder bed fusion printing.
