A periodic moment method solution for TM scattering from lossy dielectric bodies with application to wedge absorber

The periodic moment method (PMM) solution for the scattering from two-dimensional lossy dielectric bodies is developed in this paper. The purpose is to design microwave wedge absorber for low reflectivity so that one can improve the performance of anechoic chamber measurements. With PMM, the reflection and transmission coefficients of periodically distributed bodies illuminated by a plane wave have been accurately calculated using a Cray Y-MP supercomputer. Through these studies, some wedge absorber configurations have been designed, fabricated, and then tested in the OSU/ESL compact range measurement facility. Two 8 in. commercial wedges, a curved wedge, and a four-layer wedge are studied in this paper. In all cases, good agreement between calculations and measurements has been obtained.

Vaporization heat transfer of dielectric liquids on a wick-covered surface

Vaporization heat transfer characteristics were measured for the dielectric liquid FC-72 on a horizontal heated surface covered with wire screen wicks with the mesh number for the screens varying from 24 to 100. In such a situation the liquid level can be either higher or lower than the heated surface. When the liquid level was above the heated surface (shallow pool boiling), the height of the liquid level above the surface, h, was varied from 0 to 10 mm. When the liquid level was below the heated surface (evaporation through capillary pumping), the distance from the liquid level to the edge of the surface, L, was adjusted from 0 to 15 mm. Experimental data revealed that the critical heat flux (CHF) decreases as the mesh number is increased from 24 to 100 for both vaporation and shallow pool boiling, showing that the vapor-escaping limit is more important than the capillary limit in flat plate heat pipe application.

Direct time integration of Maxwell's equations in two-dimensional dielectric waveguides for propagation and scattering of femtosecond electromagnetic solitons

We present what are to our knowledge first-time calculations from vector nonlinear Maxwell's equations of femtosecond soliton propagation and scattering, including carrier waves, in two-dimensional dielectric waveguides. The time integration efficiently implements linear and nonlinear convolutions for the electric polarization, and the nonlinear convolution accounts for two quantum effects, the Kerr and Raman interactions. By retaining the optical carrier, the new method solves for fundamental quantities - optical electric and magnetic fields in space and time - rather than a nonphysical envelope function. It has the potential to provide an unprecedented two- and three-dimensional modeling capability for millimeter-scale integrated-optical circuits with submicrometer engineered inhomogeneities.

Mutual coupling between parallel columns of periodic slots in a ground plane surrounded by dielectric slabs

Arrays of slots with arbitrary orientation in a conducting plane which are infinitely periodic in one dimension and finitely periodic in another dimension are considered. The perfect conducting plane extends infinitely and is bounded on each side by dielectric slabs of finite thickness and infinite extent. Single columns of slots are represented by equivalent magnetic scattering currents, which are solved for via the moment method. The mutual coupling (admittance) between slot columns in the presence of the stratified media is found by the array scanning method (ASM), which expresses the admittance as the average of the scan admittance of an artificially constructed doubly infinite array of slots over all real scan angles. The technique avoids the use of Sommerfeld integrals, but still gives rise to singularities at scan angles corresponding to the resonant excitation of surface waves. An analytical approximation is made to remove these surface wave singularities, thus making numerical implementation of the method practical. The method is quite general and may be extended to thin slot elements of arbitrary shape and orientation.

Reduction of plasma electron density in a gas ionized by an electron beam - Use of a gaseous dielectric

Propagation of an electron beam through a gas creates a secondary electron/ion plasma which can have subsequent deleterious effects on the propagation of the beam. In the case of pulsed electron beams with short micropulse durations, these effects can be greatly reduced through the use of a small doping fraction of an electron attachment gas. We present a model which allows the calculation of the reduction in unbound plasma electron density attainable with a gaseous dielectric dopant. Potential problems with a dopant, including increased ionization, increased scattering, altered refractive index, and dopant saturation and fragmentation, are discussed.

Vaporization heat transfer of dielectric liquids on enhanced surfaces covered with screen wicks

Experiments were conducted to investigate the vaporization heat transfer characteristics for the dielectric liquid FC-72 on several wicking surfaces which may be used in flat-plate heat pipes. The wicking materials studied included microstructure enhanced surfaces and coarse surfaces covered with screen meshes. Experimental data for q versus deltaT curves and critical heat fluxes were obtained for the two different operating conditions of a heat pipe, evaporation, and shallow pool boiling. When the liquid level was above the heated surface, the height of the liquid level above the surface was varied from 0 to 10 mm. When the liquid level was below the heated surface, the distance from the liquid level to the edge of the surface was adjusted from 0 to 15 mm. Experimental results revealed that for shallow pool boiling when the heated surface was covered with a wire screen mesh, the heat transfer coefficient increased at lower heat fluxes but the critical heat flux (CHF) decreased for all the surfaces tested. In the case of evaporation, both CHF and the heat transfer coefficient increased as the microstructure surfaces were covered with screen meshes.

Surface waves on a grounded dielectric slab covered by a resistive sheet

This paper examines surface wave propagation in a grounded dielectric slab covered with a resistive sheet. Transcendental equations are derived for each polarization and are solved using iterative techniques. Attention and phase velocity are shown for a representative geometry. The results are applicable to both a grounded slab covered with a resistive sheet and an ungrounded slab covered on each side with a resistive sheet.

Low-Dielectric-Constant Polyimide/Glass Composites

Advance in polymer technology yields composites having relatively low dielectric constants. Reduction achieved by reducing interactions between linear polyimide chains and by incorporation of fluorine into polymer backbones. Further reductions obtained by physically incorporating selected diamic acid additives into polyimides. Strong potential for use in microelectronics industry for fabrication of printed-circuit boards and fabrication of components for military aircraft.

Aromatic Polyimides With Low Dielectric Constants

Linear aromatic polyimides developed containing dimethylsilane linkages in dianhydride portions of molecules and at least one trifluoromethyl group in each of diamine portions. Polyimides offer advantages of thermal stability, low density, resistance to ionizing radiation, toughness, flexibility, and exhibit lower dielectric constants. Also polyimides nearly transparent and colorless; an advantage in protective coating of solar photovoltaic cells, optical components, and antennas.

Cellulose triacetate, thin film dielectric capacitor

Very thin films of cellulose triacetate are cast from a solution containing a small amount of high boiling temperature, non-solvent which evaporates last and lifts the film from the casting surface. Stretched, oriented, crystallized films have high electrical breakdown properties. Metallized films less than about 2 microns in thickness form self-healing electrodes for high energy density, pulsed power capacitors. Thicker films can be utilized as a dielectric for a capacitor.

Dielectric properties of Mars' surface: Proposed measurement on a Mars lander

Recent studies of missions to Mars (MESUR by NASA and Marsnet by ESA) have suggested the development of semihard landers. One type was to be extremely basic, consisting mainly of a meteorological package, but with the possibility of other small, low-mass, low-power instruments. In particular, this type of lander was also considered for the exploration of the polar regions. Two methods to investigate the surface material at the landing site are discussed. Both measure the dielectric constant epsilon of the ground material. This information can then be used to elucidate the surface composition and structure. The determination of the permittivity would be of high scientific value, especially in the case of a landing on the polar ice.

High temperature polymer dielectric film-wire insulation

The highlights of the program are outlined including two major accomplishments. TRW identified and demonstrated the potential of two aromatic/heterocyclic polymers to have an outstanding and superior combination of electrical, thermal, and chemical resistance properties versus state-of-the-art Kapton for spacecraft and/or aircraft dielectric insulation applications. (Supporting data is provided in tables.) Feasibility was demonstrated for supporting/enabling technologies such as ceramic coatings, continuous film casting, and conductor wire wrapping, which are designed to accelerate qualification and deployment of the new wire insulation materials for USAF systems applications during the mid- to late-1990's.
