Nonlocal thermal transport in solar flares. II - Spectroscopic diagnostics

Physical parameters obtained for a flaring solar atmosphere in an earlier paper are used here to predict time-dependent emission-line profiles and integrated intensities as a function of position for two spectral lines commonly observed during solar flares: the X-ray resonance lines of Ca XIX and Mg XI. Considerations of ionization nonequilibrium during the rise phase of the flare are addressed, and the effects on the predicted spectral-line characteristics are discussed. It is concluded that some spectroscopic diagnostics favor the nonlocal model, but other long-standing discrepancies between the numerical models and the observations remain unresolved.

A diagnostic for determining the quality of single-reference electron correlation methods

It was recently proposed that the Euclidian norm of the t sub 1 vector of the coupled cluster wave function (normalized by the number of electrons included in the correlation procedure) could be used to determine whether a single-reference-based electron correlation procedure is appropriate. This diagnostic, T sub 1, is defined for use with self consistent field molecular orbitals and is invariant to the same orbital rotations as the coupled cluster energy. T sub 1 is investigated for several different chemical systems which exhibit a range of multireference behavior, and is shown to be an excellent measure of the importance of nondynamical electron correlation and is far superior to C sub 0 from a singles and doubles configuration interaction wave function. It is further suggested that when the aim is to recover a large fraction of the dynamical electron correlation energy, a large T sub 1 (i.e., greater than 0.02) probably indicates the need for a multireference electron correlation procedure.

Basic aerodynamic research facility for comparative studies of flow diagnostic techniques

Current flow diagnostic research efforts are focusing on higher order flow field data bases, such as those generated by laser velocimetry (LV), hot-wire anemometry, and multi-hole pressure probes. Recent low-speed comparisons of results obtained with LV and hot wires have revealed strengths and weaknesses of each instrument. A seeding study will be initiated to determine particulate tracking ability.

Demonstration of the feasibility of laser induced fluorescence for arc jet flow diagnostics

Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) studies are carried out on nitric oxide and oxygen molecules in the arc jet flows at the NASA Johnson Space Center Reentry Testing Facility. Measurements are taken in the free stream and from a blunt body shock layer. Tests are performed under different flow conditions to determine the feasibility and sensitivity of the LIF technique for various species. This is developed as a part of high enthalpy flow diagnostics and will be useful to elucidate the rotational and vibrational temperatures. Adequate sensitivity for the detection of O(2) and NO is demonstrated. Proposed improvements of the existing system are presented.

Infrared diagnostics of interstellar shocks

The observations and theoretical models concerning interstellar shock waves are discussed. Interstellar shock waves are generated by the supersonic injection of mass into the interstellar medium by young stellar objects, by stellar winds, and by supernovae. Infrared emission lines from the heated, shocked gas provide valuable diagnostics of the density, temperature, velocity field, elemental abundances and extent of the emitting region. It is shown that the comparison of observed spectra from shocked regions with theoretical shock models can provide an estimate of the shock speed and the physical conditions in the preshock gas, including the ionization fraction and the magnetic field strength.

Explosive east coast cyclogenesis - Numerical experimentation and model-based diagnostics

Numerical experimentation of explosive east-coast cyclogenesis is performed using the Florida State University Global Spectral Model (FSUGSM). The three cases examined here are the Presidents' Day storm of February 18-19, 1979 and the North Atlantic and Pacific bombs of January 18-20, 1979 which formed off the east coasts of the United States and Japan, respectively. The use of a global model provides a framework for studying the phenomena on the 3-5 day time scale. The forecast verifications of the numerical experiments indicate that the FSUGSM was able to adequately predict the phase, intensity, and synoptic-scale structure. These results justify the use of model data for diagnostic studies of the bomb. The model data are used to quantify the role of the adiabatic and diabatic forcing in the explosive cyclogenetic process, using surface pressure tendency to gage development.

The optically thick O III spectrum. I - Diagnostic ratios involving the intercombination lines

An escape-probability calculation of the optically thick O III spectrum is carried out to obtain the optical depth dependence of the intercombination doublet at 1663 A and of resonance lines between the 2p2, 2s2p3, and 2p4 configurations. The effect of optical depth on diagnostic ratios involving the intercombination lines is quantitatively established. The general question raised is whether such effects may occur in actual sources.

Spacelab Life Sciences-1 electrical diagnostics expert system

The Spacelab Life Sciences-1 (SLS-1) Electrical Diagnostic (SLED) expert system is a continuous real time knowledge-based system to monitor and diagnose electrical system problems in the Spacelab. After fault isolation, the SLED system provides corrective procedures and advice to the ground-based console operator. The SLED system updates its knowledge about the status of Spacelab every 3 seconds. The system supports multiprocessing of malfunctions and allows multiple failures to be handled simultaneously. Information which is readily available via a mouse click includes: general information about the system and each component, the electrical schematics, the recovery procedures of each malfunction, and an explanation of the diagnosis.

REDEX - The ranging equipment diagnostic expert system

REDEX, an advanced prototype expert system that diagnoses hardware failures in the Ranging Equipment (RE) at NASA's Ground Network tracking stations is described. REDEX will help the RE technician identify faulty circuit cards or modules that must be replaced, and thereby reduce troubleshooting time. It features a highly graphical user interface that uses color block diagrams and layout diagrams to illustrate the location of a fault. A semantic network knowledge representation technique was used to model the design structure of the RE. A catalog of generic troubleshooting rules was compiled to represent heuristics that are applied in diagnosing electronic equipment. Specific troubleshooting rules were identified to represent additional diagnostic knowledge that is unique to the RE. Over 50 generic and 250 specific troubleshooting rules have been derived. REDEX is implemented in Prolog on an IBM PC AT-compatible workstation. Block diagram graphics displays are color-coded to identify signals that have been monitored or inferred to have nominal values, signals that are out of tolerance, and circuit cards and functions that are diagnosed as faulty. A hypertext-like scheme is used to allow the user to easily navigate through the space of diagrams and tables. Over 50 graphic and tabular displays have been implemented. REDEX is currently being evaluated in a stand-alone mode using simulated RE fault scenarios. It will soon be interfaced to the RE and tested in an online environment. When completed and fielded, REDEX will be a concrete example of the application of expert systems technology to the problem of improving performance and reducing the lifecycle costs of operating NASA's communications networks in the 1990s.

Feasibility of non-intrusive optical diagnostic measurements in hypersonic boundary layers for flight experiments

The present investigation of possible methods for nonintrusive optical diagnostics of hypersonic vehicle boundary layers notes electron-beam fluorescence to be capable of obtaining measurements of density, temperature, and shock-front location, as well as of N2, O2, and NO concentrations. NO will be a key indicator of vehicle nose and leading edge chemistry. It is expected that laser-induced fluorescence will allow measurements of NO and O2 concentrations when compact and reliable UV lasers become available; the sensors and instrumentation for spectral resolution of fluorescence along a line emanating from the vehicle and passing through the shock front already exist.

A diagnostic technique used to obtain cross-range radiation centers from antenna patterns

A diagnostic technique for obtaining cross-range radiation centers based on antenna radiation patterns is presented. The method is similar to the synthetic aperture processing of scattered fields in the radar application. Coherent processing of the radiated fields is used to determine the various radiation centers associated with the far-zone pattern of an antenna for a given radiation direction. The technique can be used to identify an unexpected radiation center that creates an undesired effect in a pattern; on the other hand, it can improve a numerical simulation of the pattern by identifying other significant mechanisms. Cross range results for two 8' reflector antennas are presented to illustrate as well as validate that technique.

Spectral diagnostics from X-ray to radio wavelengths

A spectral diagnostic is defined as an observable spectral quantity that can be used to measure a physical parameter characterizing the observed plasma. The first step in establishing a spectral line is to determine whether the upper state of the transition is excited primarily by collisions (typically by electrons), by a radiative process, or by recombination (either direct or cascade). The ultraviolet portion of the spectrum is emphasized as it is well studied, the background photospheric continuum is weak for cool stars, and the spectrum consists of an interesting mix of lines formed by all three mechanisms.

Electron cyclotron resonance deposition and plasma diagnostics of a-Si:H and a-C:H films

Amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films deposited by electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition are discussed. It is shown that the ECR microwave plasma deposition technique can produce a-Si:H films with material qualities similar to and with a deposition rate one order of magnitude higher than for films deposited by radio-frequency glow discharge. The ECR-deposited a-C:H films are characterized by fluorescence, IR, and Raman spectroscopy. In situ optical emission spectroscopy plasma diagnostics indicates that ECR plasmas have a strong emission at 434 nm, which indicates a higher chemical reactivity than radio-frequency glow discharge plasmas. The radio frequency bias to the substrate is found to play a critical role in determining the film structure and the carbon bonding configuration of ECR-deposited a-C:H films.

Rarefied flow diagnostics using pulsed high-current electron beams

The use of high-current short-pulse electron beams in low-density gas flow diagnostics is introduced. Efficient beam propagation is demonstrated for pressure up to 300 microns. The beams, generated by low-pressure pseudospark discharges in helium, provide extremely high fluorescence levels, allowing time-resolved visualization in high-background environments. The fluorescence signal frequency is species-dependent, allowing instantaneous visualization of mixing flowfields.
