Further development and testing of the metabolic gas analyzer

Continued development of a metabolic monitor utilizing a mass spectrometer and digital computer to perform measurements and data reduction, is reported. The device prints-out breath-by-breath values for 02 consumption, C02 production, minute volume and tidal volume. The flow is measured by introduction of a tracer gas to the expired gas stream. Design modifications to reduce pressure drop in the flow splitter to one inch of water at 600 liters/min flow and to extend the range of linear flow measurement to 1000 liters/min are discussed.

Trace element analysis of coal by neutron activation

The irradiation, counting, and data reduction scheme is described for an analysis capability of 1000 samples per year. Up to 56 elements are reported on each sample. The precision and accuracy of the method are shown for 25 elements designated as hazardous by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The interference corrections for selenium and ytterbium on mercury and ytterbium on selenium are described. The effect of bromine and antimony on the determination of arsenic is also mentioned. The use of factorial design techniques to evaluate interferences in the determination of mercury, selenium, and arsenic is shown. Some typical trace element results for coal, fly ash, and bottom ash are given.

Solar corona photography, part B

Photographic observations of the solar corona by the Apollo 16 command module pilot while in lunar orbit are reported. These were designed to provide data on outer coronal forms and intensities to elongation angles of 25 deg. The results of Apollo 15 solar corona photography verified the procedures and provided the first photographs of identifiable coronal streamers curving at elongation angles of some 10 deg. By using the Apollo 15 data, exposure settings were optimized for Apollo 16, and the results show a significant improvement in photometric quality over the large range of brightness to be photographed. Ground observations of the inner solar corona (to approximately 2 solar radii from Sun center) indicate a general lack of coronal structure, and results of data reduction thus far show no streamer structure at large elongation angles.

Proposed supporting studies for the Apollo 17 UV spectrometer include analyses of existing data and theories to construct lunar atmosphere models; acquisition of information on UV albedo of moon; engineering performance data for prototype Apollo 17 UV spectrometer; UV absolute calibration; and data reduction program interface with lunar atmosphere analysis program.

In situ spectroradiometric quantification of ERTS data

The author has identified the following significant results. A multispectral photo analysis of the Willcox Playa was also made using ERTS imagery on three consecutive overpasses. The results of the analysis showed that a time sequential multispectral color presentation relates color to environmental changes as a function of time, rather than spectral changes for any single date. Since the primary mission of ERTS is to detect changes in the environment, it is believed that this mode of data reduction would be employed further in conjunction with the conventional techniques.

Prediction and measurement of heat transfer rates for the shock-induced unsteady laminar boundary layer on a flat plate

The unsteady laminar boundary layer induced by the flow-initiating shock wave passing over a flat plate mounted in a shock tube was theoretically and experimentally studied in terms of heat transfer rates to the plate for shock speeds ranging from 1.695 to 7.34 km/sec. The theory presented by Cook and Chapman for the shock-induced unsteady boundary layer on a plate is reviewed with emphasis on unsteady heat transfer. A method of measuring time-dependent heat-transfer rates using thin-film heat-flux gages and an associated data reduction technique are outlined in detail. Particular consideration is given to heat-flux measurement in short-duration ionized shocktube flows. Experimental unsteady plate heat transfer rates obtained in both air and nitrogen using thin-film heat-flux gages generally agree well with theoretical predictions. The experimental results indicate that the theory continues to predict the unsteady boundary layer behavior after the shock wave leaves the trailing edge of the plate even though the theory is strictly applicable only for the time interval in which the shock remains on the plate.

Error analysis for the Mariner-6 and -7 occultation experiments.

The Mariner-6 and -7 occultation experiments provide sets of Doppler residuals from which physical properties of the Martian atmosphere, such as the ionospheric electron-density distribution and the lower-atmosphere temperature profile, may be derived. The Doppler residuals contain both systematic and random errors. The former are removed during the data reduction, and the latter are analyzed to yield error limits on the derived physical properties of the atmosphere.

The Apollo Alpha Spectrometer.

Located in the Science Instrument Module of Apollo 15 and 16, the Alpha Particle Spectrometer was designed to detect and measure the energy of alpha particles emitted by the radon isotopes and their daughter products. The spectrometer sensor consisted of an array of totally depleted silicon surface barrier detectors. Biased amplifier and linear gate techniques were utilized to reduce resolution degradation, thereby permitting the use of a single 512 channel PHA. Sensor identification and in-flight radioactive calibration were incorporated to enhance data reduction.

High-reliability strapdown platforms using two-degree-of-freedom gyros.

This paper presents a new concept of high-reliability strapdown attitude sensing systems for space vehicles. Each system utilizes a set of redundant two-degree-of-freedom gyros. An optimum system configuration is obtained for maximum system reliability and the best measurement accuracy. Improved accuracy of the final data is obtained by using the least-square data reduction technique. Each system possesses a 'sensor performance management' feature which is capable of failure detection, faulty gyro identification, system reconfiguration, and, possibly, sensor recalibration. Improvement in reliability, as compared to other types of strapdown systems, is demonstrated. Details of the development are described in terms of a system containing four gyros.

Digital processing of Mariner 9 television data.

The digital image processing performed by the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) at JPL in support of the Mariner 9 mission is summarized. The support is divided into the general categories of image decalibration (the removal of photometric and geometric distortions from returned imagery), computer cartographic projections in support of mapping activities, and adaptive experimenter support (flexible support to provide qualitative digital enhancements and quantitative data reduction of returned imagery). Among the tasks performed were the production of maximum discriminability versions of several hundred frames to support generation of a geodetic control net for Mars, and special enhancements supporting analysis of Phobos and Deimos images.

Application of the SIT vidicon to astronomical measurements.

Review of the results of a detailed investigation of the properties and merits of silicon target (SIT) vidicon photometry, compared to previous photoelectric and photographic photometry, in astronomy applications. Following a description of the SIT-vidicon based photometry system and of its operating procedures, the data reduction methods are examined, and some of the results obtained are discussed.

Compliance measurements.

The uses of compliance measurements in linear fracture mechanics are discussed as a technique for determining the crack-extension force vs load, specimen dimensions, and elastic constants. Some practical examples of application are given, including specimen and transducer descriptions, experimental procedure, instrumentation, calculations, measurement precautions, friction effects, and data reduction. The limitations and advantages of compliance measurements are discussed. It is pointed out that good results can be obtained by the compliance method when its measurement precision is not lower than that required for Young's modulus.

Data summary and computer program for axial-flow pump rotor performance

Assembly of noncavitating blade element performance data for axial-flow pump rotor configurations has been collected and organized. Program facilitates handling large amounts of experimental data involved and may be used as data reduction program to process flow and performance measurements from other axial-flow pump configurations.

General aviation air traffic pattern safety analysis

A concept is described for evaluating the general aviation mid-air collision hazard in uncontrolled terminal airspace. Three-dimensional traffic pattern measurements were conducted at uncontrolled and controlled airports. Computer programs for data reduction, storage retrieval and statistical analysis have been developed. Initial general aviation air traffic pattern characteristics are presented. These preliminary results indicate that patterns are highly divergent from the expected standard pattern, and that pattern procedures observed can affect the ability of pilots to see and avoid each other.

Hightip-speed, low-loading transonic fan stage. Part 2: Data compilation

Tests were conducted on a high-tip-speed low-loading transonic fan stage to determine the performance and inlet flow distortion tolerance of the design. Test data were recorded for overall and blade element performance with both uniform and distorted inlet flows. A tabular summary of the data and a representative selection of the computer data reduction sheets are presented.

Active experiments in space in conjunction with Skylab

Two papers are presented which relate to the Skylab barium shaped charge experiments. The first describes the L=6.6 OOSIK barium plasma injection experiment and magnetic storm of March 7, 1972. Rocket payload, instrumentation, data reduction methods, geophysical environment at the time of the experiment, and results are given. The second paper presents the observation of an auroral Birkeland current which developed from the distortion of a barium plasma jet during the above experiment.
