Monograph provides guidelines for predicting turbine performance, sizing gas-path elements, and avoiding problems associated with mechanical design and development. Material in monograph is organized along lines of design and development effort necessary to produce turbine that satisfies requirements imposed on it.
Turbopump power gears were brought to acceptable levels of usefulness and reliability through refinements in interdependent areas of design, materials, processing, and quality control combined with extensive development testing that explored problem areas and evaluated potential solutions.
Guide is based on experience obtained in wide variety of applications using lip, circumferential, and face seals. Particular attention is given to capabilities and lubrication of various seal types. Special limitations as a result of storage requirements, quality control, installation, operation, and removal are discussed.
Significant elements in detail tank design are wall and end structures, weld joints at bulkhead and attachment junctures, and ports and access openings. Additional design considerations are influence and effect of fabrication processes on tank component design, and finally, testing and inspection that are required to establish confidence in tank design.
Turbopump assembly for modern liquid propellant rocket engine is complete system in itself. It consists of many components, some of which are themselves subsystems. Monograph deals with turbopump as system, covering selection of proper system type for each application and integration of components into working system.
The complexity of direct reading and passive dosimeters for monitoring radiation is studied to strike the right balance of compromise to simplify the monitoring procedure. Trapped protons, tissue disintegration stars, and neutrons are analyzed.
A study was made to determine improved values and definitions to be used for thermal environmental design parameters for a spacecraft in near-earth orbit. An algorithm was used to derive a total earth thermal radiation based on a mathematical relationship. Several albedo and earth thermal radiation grid maps were produced on seven track digital magnetic tape. Each map contained the values obtained during a 24 hour period over the entire earth. The output statistics are summarized, and the data processing program is described.
An analytical method and a design procedure to develop flanged separable pipe connectors are discussed. A previously established algorithm is the basis for calculating low profile flanges. The characteristics and advantages of the low profile flange are analyzed. The use of aluminum, titanium, and plastics for flange materials is described. Mathematical models are developed to show the mechanical properties of various flange configurations. A computer program for determining the structural stability of the flanges is described.
A preliminary design analysis tool for rapidly performing trade-off studies involving fatigue, fracture, static strength, weight, and cost is presented. Analysis subprograms were developed for fatigue life, crack growth life, and residual strength; and linked to a structural synthesis module which in turn was integrated into a computer program. The part definition module of a cost and weight analysis program was expanded to be compatible with the upgraded structural synthesis capability. The resultant vehicle design and evaluation program is named VDEP-2. It is an accurate and useful tool for estimating purposes at the preliminary design stage of airframe development. A sample case along with an explanation of program applications and input preparation is presented.

The properties of materials selected for use in oxygen systems are examined. Specifically, materials are selected according to trade-offs between chemical compatibility, ignition temperature, combustion characteristics, and physical properties. Quantitative energy sources and energy release rates capable of causing material combustion or explosion were also considered.
A rational criterion for structural dynamic analysis-test correlation has been established by using a matrix perturbation technique. This criterion can be used for the verification of an analytical model by the test results. Also, the same technique can be applied to update the analytical results by using the test results without repeating the entire analytical procedure. A sample problem has been used to demonstrate this technique. Very satisfactory results are obtained with only the first-order perturbation solution included for transient loading. For periodic loading, higher-order perturbation solutions are needed to achieve the same accuracy.
Recursive algebraic algorithms are developed for testing various stability properties of two-variable polynomials in finite number of steps. Stability is tested with respect to either the half plane or the unit circle applying the equivalent of the Routh or Marden test only two times, regardless of the degree of the polynomial.

A test program to determine the total discomfort associated with vehicle vibration is described. The program utilizes a three-degree-of-freedom vibration simulator to determine the effects of multifrequency and multiaxis vibration inputs. The approach to multifrequency vibration includes a separate consideration of the discomfort associated with each frequency component or band of the total spectrum and a subsequent empirical weighting of the discomfort components of these frequency bands when in various random combinations. The results are in the form of equal discomfort curves that specify the discomfort associated with discrete frequencies between 1 and 30 Hz and different acceleration levels. These results provide detailed information of the human discomfort response to increases in acceleration level for each frequency investigated. More importantly, the results provide a method for adding the discomfort associated with separate frequencies to give a total typification of the discomfort of a random spectrum of vibration.
A design is presented that proposes the use of digital image processing techniques to interface existing geocoded data sets and information management systems with thematic maps and remote sensed imagery. The basic premise is that geocoded data sets can be referenced to a raster scan that is equivalent to a grid cell data set, and that images taken of thematic maps or from remote sensing platforms can be converted to a raster scan. A major advantage of the raster format is that x, y coordinates are implicitly recognized by their position in the scan, and z values can be treated as Boolean layers in a three-dimensional data space. Such a system permits the rapid incorporation of data sets, rapid comparison of data sets, and adaptation to variable scales by resampling the raster scans.
