A g-load display for remotely piloted vehicles and other aircraft that are subject to maneuvering constraints

The absence of kinesthetic cues deprives RPV pilots of essential feedback, particularly during high speed maneuvers. A display was designed to facilitate pilot control of g loads and to permit an immediate indication of g-load constraint violations. The display embodies all the motion vector components that contribute to maneuvering accelerations. In one mode of operation, the device displays the components of angular velocity as variable length pointers emanating from the center of a circle whose radius is determined by the linear velocity of the vehicle. An alternative mode of operation permits the pilot to select a display in which g loads are presented directly as variable length pointers emanating from the center of a circle whose radius is again determined by the linear velocity of the vehicle. Each circle defines a safe region of operation, and penetration of the circumference of the appropriate circle by a pointer implies that the structural design load was exceeded.

Single Metal Atom Catalysts Prepared by Diluted Atomic Layer Deposition

The scalable and facile preparation of single-atom catalysts remains a critical challenge. Here, in this study, we introduce diluted atomic layer deposition (DALD), a unique approach for synthesizing supported metal catalysts with precisely tunable loadings. Unlike conventional metal deposition by ALD which uses pure metal precursors, DALD employs a diluted precursor mixture, combining organometallic precursors with the corresponding free ligand in controlled ratios. The method enables precise control over metal loadings, allowing the synthesis of structures ranging from nanoparticles to isolated single atoms, as exemplified by Ir, Rh, and Pt on high-surface-area γ-Al 2 O 3 . With its inherent simplicity and exceptional efficiency in metal precursor utilization, DALD represents a highly scalable strategy, unlocking opportunities for integrating single-atom catalysts into industrial processes.

Control for nuclear thermionic power source

A control for a power source which includes nuclear fuel interspersed with thermionic converters, is described. A power regulator maintains a substantially constant output voltage to a variable load, and a control circuit drives a neutron flux regulator in accordance with the current supplied to the power regulator and the neutron flux density in the region of the converters. The control circuit generates a control signal which is the difference between the neutron flux density and a linear function of the current, and drives the neutron regulator in a direction to decrease or increase the neutron flux according to the polarity of the control signal.

Extreme Efficiency 240 Vac to Load Data Center Power Delivery Topologies and Control

The research explored innovative new circuit topologies and power converter architectures for data center power delivery, from the 240 V ac voltage at the input of a server rack, down to the less than 1 V dc power supply of the latest microprocessors. The research pursued three parallel tracks to increase the power conversion efficiency and to reduce the overall size of the servers: 1) An innovative new ac-dc power converter topology which enables improved efficiency through use of a novel direct step-down topology, well suited for the popular 48V dc power distribution. 2) A new series-stacked power delivery approach for servers comprising a large number of similar loads, such as hard drives in storage servers. The approach greatly reduces the power conversion losses, and achieves efficiency well over 99%. 3) A new family of hybrid switched-capacitor power converters that enable improved efficiency and reduced size through the use of dense ceramic capacitors and new circuit topologies that leverage GaN and low-voltage Si transistor technology. Together, the accomplished research achieved the goal of reducing the power conversion losses in datacenters, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, operating costs, and overall electricity consumption.

Decentralized Distribution System Restoration with Grid-Forming/Following Inverter-Based Resources

The high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in active distribution systems has posed challenges to the centralized distribution system restoration (DSR) strategies in current practice. On the other hand, the advancement in smart inverter technologies enables the bottom-up restoration capability. This paper is motivated to develop a 3-layered hierarchical framework for decentralized DSR, based on the grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) grid-edge inverters. The first layer presents the tertiary control, which determines the load pickup schedule and generation dispatch of DERs, using the alternating direction method of the multipliers algorithm. The second layer consists of two control functions: GFM control, which regulates voltage and frequency, establishing a stable grid for GFL inverters to follow; and GFL control, which regulates the real and reactive power. In the third layer, the primary control is proposed to regulate the inverter voltage and current, which is developed based on the virtual oscillator control (VOC). Furthermore, the developed framework is tested in the modified IEEE 13-node test feeder. Two scenarios of grid-connected and islanded operating modes are designed, and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of decentralized DSR strategies for controlling grid-edge inverters to enhance the distribution system resilience.

Design, development and test of a capillary pump loop heat pipe

The development of a capillary pump loop (CPL) heat pipe, including computer modeling and breadboard testing, is presented. The computer model is a SINDA-type thermal analyzer, combined with a pressure analyzer, which predicts the transients of the CPL heat pipe during operation. The breadboard is an aluminum/ammonia transport system which contains multiple parallel evaporator and condenser zones within a single loop. Test results have demonstrated the practicality and reliability of such a design, including heat load sharing among evaporators, liquid inventory/temperature control feature, and priming under load. Transport capability for this system is 65 KW-M with individual evaporator pumps managing up to 1.7 KW at a heat flux of 15 W/sq cm. The prediction of the computer model for heat transport capabilities is in good agreement with experimental results.

The Active Aeroelastic Wing will demonstrate technologies related to aeroservoelastic effects such as wing twist and load minimization. This paper presents a control design based on H-infinity synthesis that simultaneously considers the multiple objectives associated with handling qualities, actuator limitations, and loads. The controller is realized as a filter and gain set approximation to a state-space H-infinity controller. This approximation allows scheduling of the controller over a flight envelope.

NASA preprototype redox storage system for a photovoltaic stand-alone application

A 1-kW preprototype redox storage system that has undergone characterization tests and been operated as the storage device for a 5-kW (peak) photovoltaic array is described and performance data are presented. Loss mechanisms are discussed, and simple design changes leading to appreciable increases in efficiency are suggested. The effects on system performance of nonequilibrium between the predominant species of complexed chromic ion in the negative electrode reactant solution are summarized. It is noted that with the aid of the prototype system, control concepts have been shown to be valid and trouble free and some insight has been gained into interactions at the mutual interfaces of the redox system, the photovoltaic array, the load, and the control devices.

Barrier Function-based Reinforcement Learning for Emergency Control of Power Systems

Under voltage load shedding has been considered as a standard and effective measure to recover the voltage stability of the electric power grid under emergency and severe conditions. However, this scheme usually trips a massive amount of load which can be unnecessary and harmful to customers. Recently, deep reinforcement learning (RL) has been regarded and adopted as a promising approach that can significantly reduce the amount of load shedding. However, like most existing machine learning (ML)-based control techniques, RL control usually cannot guarantee the safety of the systems under control. In this paper, we introduce a novel safe RL method for load shedding of power systems, that can enhance the safe voltage recovery of the electric power grid after experiencing faults. Unlike standard RL method, the safe RL method integrates a Barrier function into the reward function. Consequently, the optimal control policy can render the power system to avoid the safety bounds. This method is general and can be applied to other safety-critical control problems. Numerical simulations on the 39-bus IEEE benchmark is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed safe RL emergency control, as well as its adaptive capability to faults not seen in the training.

ELECTRIFICATION OF A HEAVY-DUTY OFF-ROAD MATERIAL HANDLER: ENERGY SAVINGS AND EMISSION REDUCTIONS

Federal regulations are driving the adoption of electrification technologies to reduce carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions, a metric that quantifies the global warming potential of various greenhouse gases in terms of carbon dioxide (CO2). Although no specific CO2 regulations exist for heavy-duty off-road machines, future reductions are likely, given stricter emissions standards for on-road vehicles. The heavy-duty off-road sector offers significant fuel-saving potential, as its focus has traditionally been on reliability and performance rather than fuel efficiency. This dissertation examines fuel and CO2e savings opportunities on a heavy-duty off-road material handler, the Pettibone Cary-Lift 204i, from stock configuration to simple modifications to a complete teardown and reconfiguration of the machine with a plug-in series hybrid architecture using electrified hydraulics. The study begins by modeling the baseline machine’s fuel and energy consumption, calibrating with experimental data from custom operating cycles. An energy analysis identifies key areas for fuel savings. Two simple powertrain modifications result in a combined 16.2% fuel savings. Next, a Pugh-style analysis narrows a list of electrified architectures, leading to high-fidelity models that evaluate total lifetime CO2e and costs. Higher electrification levels reduce CO2e emissions but increase costs, and electricity grid emissions significantly impact CO2e for plug-in architectures. A plug-in series hybrid is chosen for the project. In its base control form, 49% fuel and 29% CO2e savings are expected from the plug-in series hybrid compared to the baseline machine. Further savings are pursued through regenerative braking (6.3%) and load-following hydraulic control (17.8%), totaling 24.1% fuel savings, and leading to a total of 61% fuel and 41% CO2e savings compared to the baseline. Battery chemistries and charging strategies are also analyzed for cost and CO2e impacts, finding LFP batteries as superior due to longevity, and overnight level 2 charging usually at a lower cost but resulting in higher emissions than opportunity DC fast-charging (DCFC). DCFC emissions are highly dependent on grid emissions, and DCFC cost is highly dependent on grid demand charges. Finally, artificial intelligence is applied to operating cycle recognition. Neural network accuracy ranges from 81% to 99%, with applications to worksite efficiency and safety improvements.

Structural Pain Compensating Flight Control

The problem of control command and maneuver induced structural loads is an important aspect of any control system design. Designers must design the aircraft structure and the control architecture to achieve desired piloted control responses while limiting the imparted structural loads. The classical approach is to build the structure with high margins, restrict control surface commands to known good combinations, and train pilots to follow procedural maneuvering limitations. With recent advances in structural sensing and the continued desire to improve safety and vehicle fuel efficiency, it is both possible and desirable to develop control architectures that enable lighter vehicle weights while maintaining and improving protection against structural damage.

H ∞ Control for Energy Dispatch in Autonomous Nanogrid With Communication Delays

This paper proposes an optimal controller and estimator for energy dispatch to balance the power supply and demand considering communication delays. The proposed algorithm involves modeling an autonomous nanogrid (ANG) consisting of distributed energy resources, energy storage systems, loads, an $H$ ∞ controller with a reference power modulation technique, and a state estimator. The ANG was developed to express the dynamic supply-demand energy balance of a nanogird system. Reference power modulation was designed to generate the desired ESS power based on the imbalanced energy. Random communication delays were modeled using a stochastic variable satisfying the Bernoulli random binary distribution. The optimal $H$ ∞ controller and estimator were developed using a linear matrix inequality approach to exponentially stabilize the closed-loop system. Simulations were performed using real daily demand forecasts obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed real-time optimization algorithm.

Probabilistic Simulation of Progressive Fracture in Bolted-Joint Composite Laminates

This report describes computational methods to probabilistically simulate fracture in bolted composite structures. An innovative approach that is independent of stress intensity factors and fracture toughness was used to simulate progressive fracture. The effect of design variable uncertainties on structural damage was also quantified. A fast probability integrator assessed the scatter in the composite structure response before and after damage. Then the sensitivity of the response to design variables was computed. General-purpose methods, which are applicable to bolted joints in all types of structures and in all fracture processes-from damage initiation to unstable propagation and global structure collapse-were used. These methods were demonstrated for a bolted joint of a polymer matrix composite panel under edge loads. The effects of the fabrication process were included in the simulation of damage in the bolted panel. Results showed that the most effective way to reduce end displacement at fracture is to control both the load and the ply thickness. The cumulative probability for longitudinal stress in all plies was most sensitive to the load; in the 0 deg. plies it was very sensitive to ply thickness. The cumulative probability for transverse stress was most sensitive to the matrix coefficient of thermal expansion. In addition, fiber volume ratio and fiber transverse modulus both contributed significantly to the cumulative probability for the transverse stresses in all the plies.

Cockpit displayed traffic information and distributed management in air traffic control

A graphical display of information (such as surrounding aircraft and navigation routes) in the cockpit on a cathode ray tube has been proposed for improving the safety, orderliness, and expeditiousness of the air traffic control system. An investigation of this method at NASA-Ames indicated a large reduction in controller verbal work load without increasing pilot verbal load; the visual work may be increased. The cockpit displayed traffic and navigation information system reduced response delays permitting pilots to maintain their spacing more closely and precisely than when depending entirely on controller-issued radar vectors and speed command.
