Hybrid eigensolvers for nuclear configuration interaction calculations

We examine and compare several iterative methods for solving large-scale eigenvalue problems arising from nuclear structure calculations. In particular, we discuss the possibility of using block Lanczos method, a Chebyshev filtering based subspace iterations and the residual minimization method accelerated by direct inversion of iterative subspace (RMM-DIIS) and describe how these algorithms compare with the standard Lanczos algorithm and the locally optimal block preconditioned conjugate gradient (LOBPCG) algorithm. Although the RMM-DIIS method does not exhibit rapid convergence when the initial approximations to the desired eigenvectors are not sufficiently accurate, it can be effectively combined with either the block Lanczos or the LOBPCG method to yield a hybrid eigensolver that has several desirable properties. We will describe a few practical issues that need to be addressed to make the hybrid solver efficient and robust.

Bioelectrocatalytic conversion of CO₂ to PHA bioplastics using engineered methylotrophs

The sustainable generation of biodegradable plastics represents an opportunity to capture atmospheric CO 2 while reducing plastic waste accumulation in the environment. This study implements an integrated platform for bioelectrocatalytic CO 2 conversion to medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHAs). Immobilizing cobalt phthalocyanine electrocatalysts on a covalent-organic framework in a gas recirculation electrolyzer enabled CO 2 -to-methanol conversion with a carbon conversion efficiency of 98%. Integration of polymer biosynthesis pathways enabled Methylotuvimicrobium alcaliphilum 20Z R to produce ~20% mcl-PHA of the dry cell weight with a CO 2 -to-bioproducts carbon conversion efficiency of 50%. This cell line was adapted to high sodium bicarbonate media, eliminating costly intermediate separation steps while improving economic potential. Transcriptomic analysis revealed sulfate transporters and peptidoglycan biosynthesis as key pathways involved in sodium bicarbonate halotolerance. Altogether, this research presents a foundation for integrating divergent chemical and biological processes into a transformative electrobiomanufacturing platform, addressing the need for alternative pipelines for generating valuable plastics and chemicals.

Record-breaking 2020 summer marine heatwaves in the western North Pacific

Record-breaking marine heatwaves (MHWs) occurred in the western North Pacific during the summer of 2020. These unprecedented MHWs were consistent with favorable large-scale conditions that are linked to an anomalous western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH), resulting mainly from sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies across the tropical oceans. In addition, a moderate La Niña-like pattern was also conducive to transporting warm seawater to the western North Pacific. Mixed-layer heat budgets suggest that surface heat flux contributed to the SST anomaly in the western subtropical Pacific. In contrast, oceanic heat advection dominanted in the South China Sea and the western equatorial Pacific. Numerical model experiments indicated that the tropical Indian Ocean SST anomalies were responsible for the enhanced WNPSH. The increased zonal SST gradient across the tropical Pacific also played an important role. Inter-ocean interactions can modulate climate variability through ocean-atmospheric coupling and deserve more attention when predicting MHWs within the context of global warming. Additionally, it is critical to consider MHWs as a powerful tool in detecting acute, intense thermal stress events in the coral bleaching pre-warning system.

A simple-structured benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene-based molecule as a third component enables organic solar cells with over 18.2% efficiency

In this study, research has shown that ternary strategy is an effective tool for improving the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) and simple-structured small molecules with low-cost and wide bandgap which broadens the scope of the choice in third components recently attracted the attention of researchers. Herein, a small molecule with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene (BDT) core named BR-C12 which mixed well with PM6 has been designed and synthesized. Incorporating BR-C12 as third component into PM6:Y6, BR-C12 exhibits a complementary absorption with PM6 and Y6, promoted exciton dissociation and charge collection, reduced bimolecular recombination, resulting in more ordered molecular packing. The PM6:Y6:BR-C12 (1:1.2:0.1, weight ratio) OSC shows an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.02% in comparison to host binary devises (16.42%). In addition, by employing BR-C12 as third component into PM6:L8-BO, the ternary device based on PM6:L8-BO:BR-C12 also achieves significant enhancement in device photovoltaic performance with a PCE of 18.26%. In addition, BR-C12-added ternary devices exhibit improved stability than binary ones. This work presents a method for constructing high-performance ternary OSCs and enriches the abundance of materials for the third components.

Coupled effects of future rainfall and land use on urban stormwater drainage system in Tampa, Florida (USA)

Future rainfall and land use are two important factors for flood management since they both directly and indirectly affect the functionality and performance of urban stormwater drainage infrastructures. Although some studies have already examined the coupled effects of future rainfall and land use conditions, they have not concluded how such effects on both surface runoff and flood areas would change with regional surface elevation variation and infrastructure conditions. This paper analyzed the coupled effects of future rainfall and land use on urban drainage systems in terms of surface runoff quantity and flood area changes using EPA SWMM. Future downscaled and bias-corrected precipitation projections for 2040–2060 and 2080–2099 from “Downscaled CMIP3 and CMIP5 Climate and Hydrology Projections” Archive and future land use for 2050 s and 2090 s from EPA ICLUS project were used for the City of Tampa in Florida (USA). It was shown that potential runoff volume and flood area changes ranged from –40% to 160%, and –40% to 400% due to rainfall change, while potential changes induced by land use change ranged from 0% to 3.5%, and 0% to 18% respectively. Additionally, this study examined the coupled effects of future rainfall and land use changes on flood area variations, considering the capacity of drainage infrastructure and elevation variation of study site. Results showed that flood area variations are not solely influenced by runoff quantity changes due to the two external drivers, but also by other factors. Specifically, in low-relief areas with inadequate drainage infrastructure and less elevation variation, these two drivers have no additive effects on the percentage of flood area changes. In contrast, in areas with adequate drainage infrastructure and greater surface elevation variation, there are additive effects from rainfall and land use changes on flood area expansions. These findings have important implications for stakeholders involved in city planning and flooding control, particularly for urban areas facing future precipitation and urbanization challenges.

Trends in best-in-class energy-efficient technologies for room air conditioners

Improving the efficiency of room air conditioners (RACs) could provide significant energy and associated emissions savings, particularly in emerging economies with hot climates where the cooling demand is expected to increase dramatically. To help accelerate efficiency improvements, this study identifies “best-in-class” high-efficiency RAC components and products. The findings show that manufacturers tend to minimize manufacturing costs by using RAC designs that are readily available or standardized to their production, and they share components across various models. High-efficiency RAC models use advanced compressor technologies optimized at a low frequency, large heat exchangers with thermodynamically effective materials and designs, highly efficient direct current fan motors, advanced metering devices, and smart sensors for temperature and humidity control. Recently RAC manufacturers have been improving seasonal efficiency – better reflecting part-load operation – especially via variable-speed (inverter) drives for compressor motors. Recent highest-efficiency RAC models use low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants, having transitioned from conventional high-GWP refrigerants, in regions where RACs that use these low-GWP refrigerants are commercially available. Recently demonstrated innovative technologies show trends toward smart hybrid designs, evaporative cooling, and solid-state materials beyond the conventional vapor-compression technology. This information could help policymakers improve their RAC market-transformation programs to align with the most-efficient global technology.

Constraint-dependent CTOA determination for stable ductile crack growth

The crack tip opening angle (CTOA) has been used as a reliable fracture toughness to characterize stable crack growth for thin-wall structures in low-constraint conditions. Recently, it is found that CTOA can also be utilized as a robust fracture parameter to describe the arrest fracture toughness for gas transmission pipelines in ductile steels. For better understanding the concept of CTOA, this paper presents a brief review on the CTOA definitions and its test methods. And then, four CTOA models are developed for determining the CTOA toughness using conventional single edge notched bend (SENB) specimens, including the load–displacement linear fit model, the logarithmic load–displacement linear fit model, the stable tearing energy model, and the J-differentiation model. Here fracture test data from SENB specimens in A285 carbon steel are employed to evaluate the proposed CTOA models. The results show that these CTOA models can determine either identical or comparable critical CTOA values for stable ductile crack growth using the SENB specimens. A constraint-corrected CTOA resistance curve and a constraint-corrected critical CTOA equation are also obtained for A285 carbon steel.

Regulated lithium ionic flux through well-aligned channels for lithium dendrite inhibition in solid-state batteries

The utilization of solid electrolyte (SE) to suppress lithium (Li) dendrites is promising but still far from satisfactory due to the inhomogeneous Li plating/stripping. In this paper, we demonstrated a novel strategy to inhibit Li dendrites via regulating Li-ion flux in SE by using vertically aligned channels. The ion-insulating walls facilitated uniform distribution of Li-ion flux through the channels, leading to a homogeneous Li deposition, thus alleviating Li dendrite formation. As a result, symmetric cells with this SE exhibited excellent long-term stability (1000 h) against Li metal. In addition, Li4Ti5O12 (LTO)/Li cell with the developed SE achieved good battery performance over 100 cycles. The mechanism for dendrite suppression was further investigated by phase-field simulation. This work provides a novel strategy by manipulating uniform Li-ion flux to fabricate SE to inhibit Li dendrites and facilitates the development of high-performance rechargeable Li batteries.

Monitoring the long-term performance of organic redox flow battery by a distribution of relaxation time analysis

Organic redox flow batteries hold great promise as an energy storage technology, but their intricate chemistry makes them vulnerable to various degradation mechanisms. Monitoring this degradation is essential for identifying the limiting processes within the cells. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) offers a straightforward, in-situ method for measuring the total resistance of an operating cell. However, to pinpoint the limiting processes during long-term cycling, EIS data must be complemented by other techniques. Distribution of relaxation time (DRT) analysis is particularly effective for differentiating resistance components. Here, in this study, we perform a comprehensive analysis of resistance evolution and the separation of anode and cathode contributions during long-term cycling of a full cell employing 7,8-dihydroxyphenazine-2-sulfonic acid (DHPS) as the anolyte. Separate analyses of the DHPS anolyte and ferri-/ferrocyanide catholyte were conducted using a symmetric cell setup. The relaxation times derived from symmetric cells facilitate the identification of peaks in the DRT profiles from the full cell. Importantly, the DRT profiles indicate a correlation between the evolution of charge transfer resistance and the chemical degradation of DHPS. The methodologies and results outlined in this study offer significant insights for developing diagnostic tools applicable to other types of redox flow batteries.
