Luminescent hybrid halides with various centering metal cations (Zn, Cd and Pb) and diverse structures

Organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides have been extensively studied because of their great potential in optoelectronics. Herein, we report three hybrid metal halides (Bmpip) 2 ZnBr 4 , (Bmpip) 2 CdBr 4 , and (Bmpip) 8 Pb 11 Br 30 (where Bmpip + is 1-butyl-1-methyl-piperidinium, C 10 H 22 N + ). (Bmpip) 2 ZnBr 4 and (Bmpip) 2 CdBr 4 crystallize in the P2 1 /c space group with zero-dimensional crystal structures with [MBr 4 ] 2− (M = Zn, Cd) tetrahedra isolated by Bmpip + . (Bmpip) 8 Pb 11 Br 30 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P$\overline{1}$ with combining macron] with one-dimensional corrugated chains constructed from face-sharing [PbBr 6 ] 4− octahedra. Furthermore, all of the compounds exhibit excellent ambient and thermal stability. Under UV excitation, all three compounds exhibit very broad emissions. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements indicate that the broad emissions of (Bmpip) 2 ZnBr 4 and (Bmpip) 2 CdBr 4 can be attributed to both the organic cations and self-trapped excitons (STEs) and that the emission of (Bmpip) 8 Pb 11 Br 30 is assigned to STEs. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the three compounds adopt a direct band gap. This work enriches our understanding of the structure types of hybrid metal halides while revealing their diverse emission mechanisms.

The putative center in NGC 1052

Context. Many active galaxies harbor powerful relativistic jets, however, the detailed mechanisms of their formation and acceleration remain poorly understood.Aims. To investigate the area of jet acceleration and collimation with the highest available angular resolution, we study the innermost region of the bipolar jet in the nearby low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) galaxy NGC 1052.Methods. We combined observations of NGC 1052 taken with VLBA, GMVA, and EHT over one week in the spring of 2017. Our study is focused on the size and continuum spectrum of the innermost region containing the central engine and the footpoints of both jets. We employed a synchrotron-self absorption model to fit the continuum radio spectrum and we combined the size measurements from close to the central engine out to ∼1 pc to study the jet collimation.Results. For the first time, NGC 1052 was detected with the EHT, providing a size of the central region in-between both jet bases of 43 μas perpendicular to the jet axes, corresponding to just around 250 RS (Schwarzschild radii). This size estimate supports previous studies of the jets expansion profile which suggest two breaks of the profile at around 3 × 103 RS and 1 × 104 RS distances to the core. Furthermore, we estimated the magnetic field to be 1.25 Gauss at a distance of 22 μas from the central engine by fitting a synchrotron-self absorption spectrum to the innermost emission feature, which shows a spectral turn-over at ∼130 GHz. Assuming a purely poloidal magnetic field, this implies an upper limit on the magnetic field strength at the event horizon of 2.6 × 104 Gauss, which is consistent with previous measurements.Conclusions. The complex, low-brightness, double-sided jet structure in NGC 1052 makes it a challenge to detect the source at millimeter (mm) wavelengths. However, our first EHT observations have demonstrated that detection is possible up to at least 230 GHz. This study offers a glimpse through the dense surrounding torus and into the innermost central region, where the jets are formed. This has enabled us to finally resolve this region and provide improved constraints on its expansion and magnetic field strength.Key words: methods: observational / techniques: high angular resolution / techniques: interferometric / galaxies: active / galaxies: jets / galaxies: Seyfert⋆⋆ NASA Hubble Fellowship Program, Einstein Fellow.

Influence of Heat Treatments in H 2 and Ar on the E 1 center in β -Gs 2 O 3

In this report the influence of heat treating n-type bulk β-Ga 2 O 3 in hydrogen (H2) and argon (Ar) gases on the presence of the defect level commonly labeled as E 1 was studied. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy confirms that hydrogen (H) is incorporated into β-Ga 2 O 3 during H 2 annealing at 900 °C. Deep-level transient spectroscopy measurements reveal that the concentration of the E 1 level is promoted by the introduction of H, in contrast to what is observed in samples heat-treated in an Ar flow. We further find the E 1 level to be stable against heat treatments at 650 K, both with and without an applied reverse-bias voltage. Potential candidates for the defect origin of E 1 are investigated using hybrid-functional calculations, and three types of defect complexes involving H are found to exhibit charge-state transition levels compatible with E 1 , including substitutional H at one of the threefold coordinated O sites, Ga-substitutional shallow donor impurities passivated by H, and certain configurations of singly hydrogenated Ga–O divacancies. Among these types, only the latter exhibit H binding energies that are consistent with the observed thermal stability of E 1 .

Plant, insect, and fungi fossils under the center of Greenland’s ice sheet are evidence of ice-free times

The persistence and size of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) through the Pleistocene is uncertain. This is important because reconstructing changes in the GrIS determines its contribution to sea level rise during prior warm climate periods and informs future projections. To understand better the history of Greenland’s ice, we analyzed glacial till collected in 1993 from below 3 km of ice at Summit, Greenland. The till contains plant fragments, wood, insect parts, fungi, and cosmogenic nuclides showing that the bed of the GrIS at Summit is a long-lived, stable land surface preserving a record of deposition, exposure, and interglacial ecosystems. Knowing that central Greenland was tundra-covered during the Pleistocene informs the understanding of Arctic biosphere response to deglaciation.

A million persons, a million dreams: a vision for a national center of radiation epidemiology and biology

Epidemiologic studies of radiation-exposed populations form the basis for human safety standards. Furthermore, they also help shape public health policy and evidence-based health practices by identifying and quantifying health risks of exposure in defined populations. For more than a century, epidemiologists have studied the consequences of radiation exposures, yet the health effects of low levels delivered at a low-dose rate remain equivocal.

Weak bosons as partons below 10 TeV partonic center-of-momentum

We investigate the modeling of weak boson number densities for leptons and hadrons in practical calculations in the Standard Model. Working in the framework of the Effective $W$ Approximation (EWA) and in $R_\xi$ and axial gauges, we derive the unrenormalized, tree-level parton number density functions for weak bosons from massless leptons at next-to-leading power in the collinear expansion. Corrections exhibit a number of properties, including those conjectured but never universally derived. Parallels with heavy quark factorization are also found. We avoid pathologies through a novel set of kinematical consistency conditions. When satisfied, good agreement between the full and approximated matrix elements is achieved. Findings suggest that the EWA may be testable at the Large Hadron Collider with $450$ fb$^{-1}$ luminosity of same-sign $WW$ scattering data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV.
