A new approach to the solution of large, full matrix equations: A two-dimensional potential flow feasibility study

An approach to the solution of matrix problems resulting from integral equations of mathematical physics is presented. Based on the inherent smoothness in such equations, the problem is reformulated using a set of orthogonal basis vectors, leading to an equivalent coefficient problem which can be of lower order without significantly impairing the accuracy of the solution. This approach was evaluated using a two-dimensional Neumann problem describing the inviscid, incompressible flow over an airfoil. Two different kinds of mode functions were investigated, namely eigenfunction series and Fourier series. The method using Fourier series was found preferable. It uses all of the coefficients from a Fast Fourier Transform algorithm in an approximate method which exploits the known structure of the transformed coefficient matrix and very promising results for the flow over a realistic airfoil are obtained. On the basis of the results presented here, an order of magnitude reduction in this computer time can be expected for such problems as compared with the time for a direct matrix solution.

On exosubsets and internal models

Consideration is given to the internal model principle for linear multivariable regulators. The paper examines the possibility of directly constructing a suitable exosubset of regulator states from elementary dynamical descriptions of plant, exosystem, and controller on the basis of quotient set representation of exosystem states. It is found that exosubset existence is a nontrivial question; the importance of product vs coproduct state descriptions for the regulator is emphasized.

Aircraft performance in a JAWS microburst

Attention is given to the detailed features of a servere microburst event, the flight behavior of a 727 airliner in such an event as predicted by a numerical simulation, and several low level wind shear detection and warning concepts. The Joint Airport Weather Studies project data sets are the basis of the numerical simulation. The calculation of meaningful flight paths under varying wind conditions for microburst avoidance is demonstrated.

Eigenfunction methods in magnetospheric radial-diffusion theory

Complete sets of orthonormal basis functions constructed according to a generalization of the quantum-mechanical WKB approximation can be used to generate a nearly-diagonal matrix representation of the radial-transport operator for ring-current ions in the presence of radial diffusion and charge exchange. The resulting eigenfunctions (constructed by weighting the basis functions in proportion to the respective components of the eigenvectors of the matrix representation) and eigenvalues provide a spatial and temporal description of the evolving phase-space density during and following a magnetospheric disturbance (e.g., a magnetic storm). A linear superposition of the basis functions can also be used to eliminate any discrepancy between the steady-state solution of the transport equation and the appropriate WKB approximation of this steady-state solution.

Using trees to compute approximate solutions to ordinary differential equations exactly

Some recent work is reviewed which relates families of trees to symbolic algorithms for the exact computation of series which approximate solutions of ordinary differential equations. It turns out that the vector space whose basis is the set of finite, rooted trees carries a natural multiplication related to the composition of differential operators, making the space of trees an algebra. This algebraic structure can be exploited to yield a variety of algorithms for manipulating vector fields and the series and algebras they generate.

Water detection at the moon, Mars and comets with a combined neutron gamma ray instrument

Measuring the fluxes of thermal and epithermal neutrons at a planetary object in conjunction with gamma-ray spectroscopic observations will provide information about the chemical composition of the surface which is less model dependent than the gamma ray measurements by themselves. Researchers devised a passive neutron detector for this purpose. An experimental model was designed and built. Three variables provided the basis for a set of experiments: thickness of the Sm and B layers, the presence or absence of the ACS, and the position of the source relative to the PND's cylindrical axis. Experimental results are given.

Software reengineering

Today's software systems generally use obsolete technology, are not integrated properly with other software systems, and are difficult and costly to maintain. The discipline of reverse engineering is becoming prominent as organizations try to move their systems up to more modern and maintainable technology in a cost effective manner. JSC created a significant set of tools to develop and maintain FORTRAN and C code during development of the Space Shuttle. This tool set forms the basis for an integrated environment to re-engineer existing code into modern software engineering structures which are then easier and less costly to maintain and which allow a fairly straightforward translation into other target languages. The environment will support these structures and practices even in areas where the language definition and compilers do not enforce good software engineering. The knowledge and data captured using the reverse engineering tools is passed to standard forward engineering tools to redesign or perform major upgrades to software systems in a much more cost effective manner than using older technologies. A beta vision of the environment was released in Mar. 1991. The commercial potential for such re-engineering tools is very great. CASE TRENDS magazine reported it to be the primary concern of over four hundred of the top MIS executives.

Electrostatic turbulence in the earth's central plasma sheet produced by multiple-ring ion distributions

Attention is given to a mechanism to generate a broad spectrum of electrostatic turbulence in the quiet time central plasma sheet (CPS) plasma. It is shown theoretically that multiple-ring ion distributions can generate short-wavelength (less than about 1), electrostatic turbulence with frequencies less than about kVj, where Vj is the velocity of the jth ring. On the basis of a set of parameters from measurements made in the CPS, it is found that electrostatic turbulence can be generated with wavenumbers in the range of 0.02 and 1.0, with real frequencies in the range of 0 and 10, and with linear growth rates greater than 0.01 over a broad range of angles relative to the magnetic field (5-90 deg). These theoretical results are compared with wave data from ISEE 1 using an ion distribution function exhibiting multiple-ring structures observed at the same time. The theoretical results in the linear regime are found to be consistent with the wave data.

Galactic disks, infall, and the global value of Omega

Stringent limits on the current rate of infall of satellite systems onto spiral galaxies are set on the basis of the thinness and coldness of Galactic disks. For infalling satellites on isotropically oriented circular orbits, it is shown that, due to scattering, the thermal energy gain of the disk exceeds the satellite energy loss from dynamical friction by a factor of 1.6, with 25 percent deposited in z motion and 75 percent in planar motions. It is found that no more than 4 percent of the Galactic mass inside the solar radius can have accreted within the last 5 billion years, or else its scale and its Toomre Q-parameter would exceed observed values. In standard cold-dark-matter-dominated models for the growth of structure with Omega sub tot of 1, the mass accreted in dark matter lumps rises faster than t exp 2/3 and would exceed 28 percent in the last 5 Gyr. It is proposed that heating from satellite infall accounts for a substantial fraction of the increase of velocity dispersion and scale height with age that is observed in the Galaxy.

Initial weather regimes as predictors of numerical 30-day mean forecast accuracy

Thirty 30-day mean 500-mb-height anomaly forecasts generated by the NCAR Community Climate Model (CCM) for the year 1978 are examined in order to determine if the forecast accuracy can be estimated with the initial conditions. The initial weather regimes were defined in such a way that the regimes could discriminate between the best and the worst 30-day mean forecasts run from the initial fields in this data set. On the basis of the CCM experiments, it is suggested that the accuracy of numerical 30-day mean forecasts may depend upon the accuracy with which the cyclones and their interactions with the planetary scale are predicted early in the forecast cycle, and that this accuracy may depend upon the initial conditions.

The optical and near-infrared colors of galaxies, 1: The photometric data

We present optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopic redshifts of a well defined sample of 171 field galaxies selected from three high galactic latitude fields. This data set forms the basis for subsequent studies to characterize the trends, dispersion, and evolution of rest-frame colors and image structure. A subset of 143 galaxies constitutes a magnitude-limited sample to B approx. 19.9-20.75 (depending on field), with a median redshift of 0.14, and a maximum redshift of 0.54. This subset is statistically representative in its sampling of the apparent color distribution of galaxies. Thirty six galaxies were selected to have the reddest red-optical colors in two redshift intervals between 0.2 less than z less than 0.3. Photometric passbands are similar to U, B, V, I, and K, and sample galaxy spectral energy distributions between 0.37 and 2.2 micrometers in the observed frame, or down to 0.26 micrometers in the rest frame for the most distant galaxies. B and K images of the entire sample are assembled to form the first optical and near-infrared atlas of a statistically-representative sample of field galaxies. We discuss techniques for faint field-galaxy photometry, including a working definition of a total magnitude, and a method for matching magnitudes in different passbands and different seeing conditions to ensure reliable, integrated colors. Photographic saturation, which substantially affects the brightest 12% of our sample in the optical bands, is corrected with a model employing measured plate-density distributions for each galaxy, calibrated via similar measurements for stars as a function of known saturation level. Both the relative and absolute calibration of our photometry are demonstrated.

Some Outstanding Products from the GATE Convection Data Set: A Personal View

Concerning our knowledge of convective clouds and their important processes, GATE marks a watershed between "seeing through a glass darkly" and "then face to face" in some of the most vital aspects of convective systems. Two main areas will be discussed here, namely the interactions of observations and modeling in documentation of slow and fast-moving squall lines, for which the publications began in the 70's, and the use of the GATE ships' radar data set as the basis for demonstrating that tropical rainfall could be measured from space, resulting in the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). The TRMM satellite was launched in 1997, with the enabling analyses reaching publication in the 1980's.

First Look at Landsat-7 Mission Performance: Technical and Operational Results to Date

A primary goal of the current Landsat-7 mission, launched on April 15, 1999, is to acquire and refresh on a seasonal basis, calibrated ata sets of multispectral digital imagery of the landmass of the Earth The Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) imager flown on Landsat-7 provides ground spatial resolutions in the panchromatic, reflective and emissive bands of 15, 30 and 60 meters, respectively, for a nominal scene 183 km wide by 170 km long. This mission not only builds on the invaluable 27-year continuous archive of thematic images of the Earth provided by previous Landsat satellites, it also inaugurates a new era of robust data acquisition with an emphasis on global change science. The newly developed Long Term Acquisition Plan (LTAP) is being used to optimize the systematic collection of data from all parts of the globe, populating the U.S.-held archive at the USGS EROS Data Center (EDC) with over 90,000 Landsat scene per year . An additional 73,000 Images are expected to be acquired each year by several international ground stations, for a total downlink of Landsat7 data in excess of 100 terabytes per year. Nearly 20,000 scan of Landsat-7 ETM+ data have already been acquired in the first 100 days of the mission. Early results derived from assessments of the ETM+ instrument, the spacecraft, and the ground processing systems indicate that the image quality is outstanding, clearly the best ever provided by any Landsat mission. Sensor radiometric background stability after the first 100 days in orbit is approximately 0.1 percent. Stability of the Full Aperture Solar Calibrator is approximately 0.3 percent, and mid-scale per pixel noise is approximately 0.6 percent. A ground processing system has been implemented at EDC which is capable of capturing, processing and archiving 250 Landsat scenes 9 per day, and delivering 100 scene products to seems each day. The cost of a systematically-processed Level 1 product has been dropped dramatically to $600, end there is no longer any copyright protection an the data. The net result is that the use of Landsat ETM+ data is expected to grow dramatically, and this growth is expected to benefit all facets of the land remote sensing community.

Radiation shielding estimates for manned Mars space flight

In the analysis of the required radiation shielding protection of spacecraft during a Mars flight, specific effects of solar activity (SA) on the intensity of galactic and solar cosmic rays were taken into consideration. Three spaceflight periods were considered: (1) maximum SA; (2) minimum SA; and (3) intermediate SA, when intensities of both galactic and solar cosmic rays are moderately high. Scenarios of spaceflights utilizing liquid-propellant rocket engines, low- and intermediate-thrust nuclear electrojet engines, and nuclear rocket engines, all of which have been designed in the Soviet Union, are reviewed. Calculations were performed on the basis of a set of standards for radiation protection approved by the U.S.S.R. State Committee for Standards. It was found that the lowest estimated mass of a Mars spacecraft, including the radiation shielding mass, obtained using a combination of a liquid propellant engine with low and intermediate thrust nuclear electrojet engines, would be 500-550 metric tons.

Mission Success for Combustion Science

This presentation describes how mission success for combustion experiments has been obtained in previous spaceflight experiments and how it will be obtained for future International Space Station (ISS) experiments. The fluids and combustion facility is a payload planned for the ISS. It is composed of two racks: the fluids Integrated rack and the Combustion INtegrated Rack (CIR). Requirements for the CIR were obtained from a set of combustion basis experiments that served as surrogates for later experiments. The process for experiments that fly on the ISS includes proposal selection, requirements and success criteria definition, science and engineering reviews, mission operations, and postflight operations. By following this process, the microgravity combustion science program has attained success in 41 out of 42 experiments.

Analysis of the ST-T complex of the electrocardiogram using the Karhunen--Loeve transform: adaptive monitoring and alternans detection

The Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) is applied to study the ventricular repolarisation period as reflected in the ST-T complex of the surface ECG. The KLT coefficients provide a sensitive means of quantitating ST-T shapes. A training set of ST-T complexes is used to derive a set of KLT basis vectors that permits representation of 90% of the signal energy using four KLT coefficients. As a truncated KLT expansion tends to favor representation of the signal over any additive noise, a time series of KLT coefficients obtained from successive ST-T complexes is better suited for representation of both medium-term variations (such as ischemic changes) and short-term variations (such as ST-T alternans) than discrete parameters such as the ST level or other local indices. For analysis of ischemic changes, an adaptive filter is described that can be used to estimate the KLT coefficient, yielding an increase in the signal-to-noise ratio of 10 dB (u = 0.1), with a convergence time of about three beats. A beat spectrum of the unfiltered KLT coefficient series is used for detection of ST-T alterans. These methods are illustrated with examples from the European ST-T Database. About 20% of records revealed quasi-periodic salvos of ischemic ST-T change episodes and another 20% exhibit repetitive, but not clearly periodic patterns of ST-T change episodes. About 5% of ischemic episodes were associated with ST-T alterans.

Development of a Fan for Future Space Suit Applications

NASA's next generation space suit system will place new demands on the fan used to circulate breathing gas through the ventilation loop of the portable life support system. Long duration missions with frequent extravehicular activities (EVAs), the requirement for significant increases in reliability and durability, and a mission profile that imposes strict limits on weight, volume and power create the basis for a set of requirements that demand more performance than is available from existing fan designs. This paper describes the development of a new fan to meet these needs. A centrifugal fan was designed with a normal operating speed of approximately 39,400 rpm to meet the ventilation flow requirements while also meeting the aggressive minimal packaging, weight and power requirements. The prototype fan also operates at 56,000 rpm to satisfy a second operating condition associated with a single fan providing ventilation flow to two spacesuits connected in series. This fan incorporates a novel nonmetallic "can" to keep the oxygen flow separate from the motor electronics, thus eliminating ignition potential. The nonmetallic can enables a small package size and low power consumption. To keep cost and schedule within project bounds a commercial motor controller was used. The fan design has been detailed and implemented using materials and approaches selected to address anticipated mission needs. Test data is presented to show how this fan performs relative to anticipated ventilation requirements for the EVA portable life support system. Additionally, data is presented to show tolerance to anticipated environmental factors such as acoustics, shock, and vibration. Recommendations for forward work to progress the technology readiness level and prepare the fan for the next EVA space suit system are also discussed.
