Polyoxometalate derivatized metal oxide electrodes

A porous transparent electrode is formed where a film comprising of semiconducting nanoparticles is decorated with polyoxometalates (POMs) bonded to their surfaces. The semiconducting nanoparticles are transparent metal oxide. The semiconducting nanoparticles include tin-doped indium oxide (ITO), fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO), or titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ). In an embodiment, the POM is [SiW 12 O 40 ]L 4− ; [α-P 2 W 18 O 62 ] 6− ; or [α 2 -P 2 W 17 O 61 ] 10− . The semiconducting nanoparticles bond to the POM through a combination of electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds. The porous transparent electrode can be placed in a protonated form or ion-paired with alkali metal cations or tetraalkylammonium cations.

Synthesis and ion-irradiation tolerance of the Dy2TiO5 polymorphs

In developing improvements in nuclear fuels, work has been conducted in replacing boron with lanthanides to act as neutron absorbent materials. To further this development for the first time the three major polymorphs of Dy2TiO5 have been fabricated as bulk, single-phase materials in a systematic study. Crystal structure refinement has been carried out from powder x-ray diffraction data, with further structural detail attained via electron diffraction. A cubic phase, defect-pyrochlore, Fd-3m space group, was found with cell parameter a = 10.2996 (1) angstrom and oxygen x48f positional parameter = 0.331 (1). Dy2TiO5 was also fabricated as a bulk, single-phase compound with hexagonal symmetry, P6(3)/mmc space group, with cell parameters a = b = 3.6307(2), c = 11.8963(8) angstrom. The radiation response for each of the polymorphs has been investigated in-situ via 1 MeV Kr - ion-irradiation and transmission electron microscopy characterisation at the IVEM-TANDEM facility, Argonne National Laboratory. Critical temperatures, T-c, for maintaining crystallinity during irradiation were determined and showed Dy2TiO5 with either orthorhombic or cubic symmetry to perform the best, with the lowest T-c values of 711 and 761 K respectively when compared with the hexagonal form. These relatively low T-c values may be attributed to different characteristics for each phase; high anti-site defect formation energy for the orthorhombic symmetry, and the ability to accommodate disorder for the cubic symmetry.

Insights into the Promotion with Ru of Co/TiO 2 Fischer–Tropsch Catalysts: An In Situ Spectroscopic Study

Although ruthenium is a common promoter for cobalt-based Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalysts, the origin of Ru promotion and promoter concentration effects remains controversial. To gain a fundamental understanding of the Ru promotion effects, we herein performed an in situ spectroscopic study by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)–Auger of working Co/TiO 2 catalysts (ca. 12 wt % Co, pure anatase TiO2 phase) promoted with different amounts of Ru (0.1–1.2 wt %). At typical FTS conditions (220 °C, 20 bar, H 2 /CO = 2), the activity in terms of both metal-time-yield (MTY) and initial turnover frequency (TOF) was maximized for the catalysts promoted with 0.1–0.2 wt % Ru, for which most of the Ru was alloyed with Co in bimetallic nanoparticles. The analysis of Auger electrons evidenced that the lower (apparent) TOF of accessible Co0 sites in the absence of Ru and at Ru concentrations beyond 0.2 wt % is bridged to the development, under reaction conditions, of FTS-inactive cobalt carbide (CoC x ) and cobalt oxide (CoO x ) patches, respectively, at the outermost surface of cobalt crystallites.
