The Nimbus-7 Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) data set and its uses

The Nimbus-7 Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) instrument began recording data on November 16, 1978 and it is now in its 12th data year. The principle products are nine years of global albedo, outgoing longwave, and net radiation plus continuing solar irradiance measurements. The presence of an associated six-year Nimbus-7 global cloud data set enhances the usefulness of the ERB products. The chief purpose of this paper is to describe some uses that have been made of the data. These include studies in: regional energy heat budgets, the improvement of climate and weather prediction models, interannual climate variations, shortwave bidirectional reflectance from earth atmosphere scenes, and solar physics. The evolution of the data products with time and some algorithm and calibration problems are also briefly discussed. Despite numerous problems, the experiment continues to prove its usefulness.

Excursion set mass functions for hierarchical Gaussian fluctuations

It is pointed out that most schemes for determining the mass function of virialized objects from the statistics of the initial density perturbation field suffer from the cloud-in-cloud problem of miscounting the number of low-mass clumps, many of which would have been subsumed into larger objects. The paper proposes a solution based on the theory of the excursion sets of F(r, R sub f), the four-dimensional initial density perturbation field smoothed with a continuous hierarchy of filters of radii R sub f.

Analysis of the optimal laminated target made up of discrete set of materials

A new class of problems was analyzed to estimate an optimal structure of laminated targets fabricated from the specified set of homogeneous materials. An approximate description of the perforation process is based on the model of radial hole extension. The problem is solved by using the needle-type variation technique. The desired optimization conditions and quantitative/qualitative estimations of optimal targets were obtained and are discussed using specific examples.

Flight set 360L009 (STS-36) case and seals component, volume 2

The performance of the 360L009, Ninth Flight, Redesigned Solid Rocket Motors (RSRM) is assessed in respect to case hardware and joint sealing issues as seen from post-fire assessment of the case and seals. In addition, all of the potential anomalies have been classified and summarized. The post-fire assessment of both motors showed the case segments to be in good condition. Field joint fretting of this flight set ranged from light on most of the joints to locally heavy on three of the joints. The LH aft field joint is the most heavily fretted joint to date; this joint had previously fretted areas from STS-27. No new fretting was found in old fretting locations. However, new frets were found at the edges of repaired areas on both the LH center and aft field joints. All fretting was mapped from the inner clevis leg. The capture feature fretting was not mapped due to the difficulty of measuring the fretting in the capture feature region. It is assumed that the capture feature had damage similar to that on the inner clevis leg.

Formal verification of a set of memory management units

This document describes the verification of a set of memory management units (MMU). The verification effort demonstrates the use of hierarchical decomposition and abstract theories. The MMUs can be organized into a complexity hierarchy. Each new level in the hierarchy adds a few significant features or modifications to the lower level MMU. The units described include: (1) a page check translation look-aside module (TLM); (2) a page check TLM with supervisor line; (3) a base bounds MMU; (4) a virtual address translation MMU; and (5) a virtual address translation MMU with memory resident segment table.

Situation awareness in command and control settings

Many military and civilian operational settings are described as command and control (C2) environments characterized by high information load, extensive team coordination, and communication demands. To address these problems, designers have turned to the application of automation and decision aids. Currently, there are few techniques for assessing the performance of C2 operators with which to guide applications. A need exists for constructs on which to evaluate C2 systems. One possible concept for addressing these issues is that of Situation Awareness (SA). The SA concept and methodologies have developed largely around the cockpit environment. The extension is discussed of the SA concept to a team context related to C2 environments. Then the implications of such an approach for developing a methodology to empirically measure team SA in a C2 environment which should allow for the assessment of SA of both individual operators and overall SA of operational teams. The discussion also focuses on how a knowledge of SA may impact the design and development of systems which optimize rather than maximize information access and processing and, subsequently, improve C2 decision making.

Measuring frequency changes due to microwave power variations as a function of C-field setting in a rubidium frequency standard

It has been shown in previous studies that in some cesium frequency standards there exist certain C-field settings that minimize frequency changes that are due to variations in the microwave power. In order to determine whether similar results could be obtained with rubidium (Rb) frequency standards (clocks), we performed a similar study, using a completely automated measurement system, on a commercial Rb standard. From our measurements we found that changing the microwave power to the filter cell resulted in significant changes in frequency, and that the magnitude of these frequency changes at low C-field levels went to zero and decreased as the C-field was increased.

Determination of a natural basis function set on thick, structured slabs using Prony's method

The calculation of currents on a thick, structured slab such as a thick slab of honeycomb is discussed. Unfortunately, for certain applications, the slab can be on the order of several wavelengths, so that the straightforward application of the method of moments using subdomain basis functions is too expensive. The authors discuss how to apply Prony's method to the currents calculated for a thin, structured slab to obtain a natural set of basis functions to represent the currents in the interior of a thick slab. Prony's method represents the currents as a series of complex exponential functions. The thick slab problem is then solved by the method of moments using subdomain basis functions near the slab interfaces and one or two of the complex exponentials as basis functions within the slab.

Steep-sided domes on Venus - Characteristics, geologic setting, and eruption conditions from Magellan data

A survey of more than 95 percent of the Venus surface reveals 145 steep-sided domes which can be subdivided into a variety of morphologic forms, the most common being shaped like inverted bowls or flat-topped domes. Results of a preliminary analysis of the distribution and geologic setting of the domes are presented. The relation of the domes to analogous terrestrial features is examined, and possible models for their mode of emplacement are outlined.

Atlas of albedo and absorbed solar radiation derived from Nimbus 7 earth radiation budget data set, November 1985 to October 1987

An atlas of monthly mean global contour maps of albedo and absorbed solar radiation is presented for 21 months from Nov. 1985 to Oct. 1987. These data were retrieved from measurements made by the shortwave wide-field-of-view radiometer of the Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) instrument aboard the Nimbus 7 spacecraft. Profiles of zonal mean albedos and absorbed solar radiation were tabulated. These geographical distributions are provided as a resource for researchers studying the radiation budget of the Earth. The El Nino/Southern Oscillation event of 1986-1987 is included in this data set. This atlas of albedo and absorbed solar radiation extends to 12 years the period covered by two similar atlases: NASA RP-1230 (Jul. 1975 - Oct. 1978) and NASA RP-1231 (Nov. 1978 - Oct. 1985). These three compilations complement the atlases of outgoing longwave radiation by Bess and Smith in NASA RP-1185, RP-1186, and RP-1261, which were also based on the Nimbus 6 and 7 ERB data.

Fuzzy set methods for object recognition in space applications

During the reporting period, the development of the theory and application of methodologies for decision making under uncertainty was addressed. Two subreports are included; the first on properties of general hybrid operators, while the second considers some new research on generalized threshold logic units. In the first part, the properties of the additive gamma-model, where the intersection part is first considered to be the product of the input values and the union part is obtained by an extension of De Morgan's law to fuzzy sets, is explored. Then the Yager's class of union and intersection is used in the additive gamma-model. The inputs are weighted to some power that represents their importance and thus their contribution to the compensation process. In the second part, the extension of binary logic synthesis methods to multiple valued logic synthesis methods to enable the synthesis of decision networks when the input/output variables are not binary is discussed.

Improved inhalation technology for setting safe exposure levels for workplace chemicals

Threshold Limit Values recommended as allowable air concentrations of a chemical in the workplace are often based upon a no-observable-effect-level (NOEL) determined by experimental inhalation studies using rodents. A 'safe level' for human exposure must then be estimated by the use of generalized safety factors in attempts to extrapolate from experimental rodents to man. The recent development of chemical-specific physiologically-based toxicokinetics makes use of measured physiological, biochemical, and metabolic parameters to construct a validated model that is able to 'scale-up' rodent response data to predict the behavior of the chemical in man. This procedure is made possible by recent advances in personal computer software and the emergence of appropriate biological data, and provides an analytical tool for much more reliable risk evaluation and airborne chemical exposure level setting for humans.

Mathematical Relationships Between Two Sets of Laser Anemometer Measurements for Resolving the Total Velocity Vector

The mathematical relations between the measured velocity fields for the same compressor rotor flow field resolved by two fringe type laser anemometers at different observational locations are developed in this report. The relations allow the two sets of velocity measurements to be combined to produce a total velocity vector field for the compressor rotor. This report presents the derivation of the mathematical relations, beginning with the specification of the coordinate systems and the velocity projections in those coordinate systems. The vector projections are then transformed into a common coordinate system. The transformed vector coordinates are then combined to determine the total velocity vector. A numerical example showing the solution procedure is included.

Possibilistic measurement and set statistics

Set-based statistics are necessary to generate possibility distributions from measured data. Methods by which physical measurements can generate statistical data on real intervals are considered, including the following: trials from multiple heterogeneous measurement devices rather than a single instrument at multiple times; classes of consistent intervals constructed from statistical data around a common point focus or interval core; and consonant intervals constructed from statistical data.

Report on the test set-up for the structural testing of the Airmass Sunburst Ultralight Aircraft

This report reviews the test set-up and procedure for the structural testing of the Airmass Sunburst Ultralight Aircraft. In general aviation today, there is a growing need for more stringent design criteria for ultralight aircraft. Unlike most general aviation aircraft, the ultralight lacks sufficient design criteria and more importantly it lacks sufficient certification enforcement. The Airmass Sunburst ultralight that is currently being tested is responsible for over a dozen deaths. It is believed that had there been a more stringent criteria and certification process, this might have been prevented. Our attempt is to show that the failing loads of the aircraft in question are so far below that of the current design criteria, that the laws need to be changed.

Load test set-up for the Airmass Sunburst Ultra-Light Aircraft

The purpose of this project was to set up, instrument, and test a Sunburst Ultra-Light aircraft. The intentions of the project were that the aircraft would need to be suspended from the test stand, leveled in the stand, the strain gauges tested and wired to the test equipment, and finally, the aircraft would be destroyed to obtain the failing loads. All jobs were completed, except for the destruction of the aircraft. This notebook shows the group's progress as these tasks were completed, and the following section attempts to explain the photographs in the notebook.

Variational Trajectory Optimization Tool Set: Technical description and user's manual

The algorithms that comprise the Variational Trajectory Optimization Tool Set (VTOTS) package are briefly described. The VTOTS is a software package for solving nonlinear constrained optimal control problems from a wide range of engineering and scientific disciplines. The VTOTS package was specifically designed to minimize the amount of user programming; in fact, for problems that may be expressed in terms of analytical functions, the user needs only to define the problem in terms of symbolic variables. This version of the VTOTS does not support tabular data; thus, problems must be expressed in terms of analytical functions. The VTOTS package consists of two methods for solving nonlinear optimal control problems: a time-domain finite-element algorithm and a multiple shooting algorithm. These two algorithms, under the VTOTS package, may be run independently or jointly. The finite-element algorithm generates approximate solutions, whereas the shooting algorithm provides a more accurate solution to the optimization problem. A user's manual, some examples with results, and a brief description of the individual subroutines are included.
