Synthesis, structures and catalytic activity of some BINOL based boronates and boronium salts

The BINOL supported chiral boronate ester [C 10 H 12 O 2 BC 6 F5(THF)] [(R)-1], [C 10 H 12 O 2 BC 6 F 5 (O=PEt 3 )] [(R)-3] and [C 10 H 12 O 2 BC 6 F 5 ] 2 [(R,R)-2] as well as the chiral boronium salts [C 10 H 12 O 2 B(O=PEt 3 ) 2 ] + [B(O 2 C 10 H 12 ) 2 ] - , [(R)-6] and [C 10 H 12 O 2 B(O=SMe 2 ) 2 ] + [B(O 2 C 10 H 12 ) 2 ] [(R)-7] have been synthesized, characterized by NMR spectroscopy, and the solid state structures of [(R)-1], [(R,R)-2] and [(R)-3] determined. Chiral ester [(R)-1] was found to be a potent Lewis acid, similar to B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , and capable of rapidly catalyzing the annulation of (R)-, (S)- and rac-styrene oxide with nitrone PhCH=N(O)Me to trans-2-methyl-3,6-diphenyl-1,4,2-dioxazine (trans-11) with high regio- and diastereoslectivities.

Stabilized photoemission from organic molecules in zero-dimensional hybrid Zn and Cd halides

This work explores the utilization of a photoactive organic cation for the preparation of R 2 MCl 4 (M = Zn, Cd; R = (E)-4-styrylpyridinium, C 13 H 12 N + ). Here, the zero-dimensional crystal structures of R 2 MCl 4 contain isolated tetrahedral anions [MCl 4 ] 2– separated by the organic cations R + , leading to flat bands around the optical band gap. In R 2 MCl 4 , the inorganic band gaps are sufficiently large to accommodate the organic molecular levels within, and therefore, the optical properties of R 2 MCl 4 are determined by the organic cation. Our combined optical spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) studies confirm the attribution of the bright green photoluminescence demonstrated by R 2 MCl 4 to the organic molecular emission. Importantly, the incorporation of the photoemissive organic cation R + into the hybrid framework in R 2 MCl 4 leads to a nearly two-fold enhancement of the light emission efficiency with the measured photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) values of 6.04%, 10.40% and 11.21% for RCl, R 2 ZnCl 4 and R 2 CdCl 4 , respectively. In addition, the crystal structure of the hybrid R 2 MCl 4 ensures a stabilized PL emission, preventing the occurrence of the harmful organic photodimerization, which is a notorious problem for this class of organic emitters.

Consistency study of high- and low-accreting Mg ii quasars: no significant effect of the Fe ii to Mg ii flux ratio on the radius–luminosity relation dispersion

ABSTRACT We use observations of 66 reverberation-measured Mg ii quasars (QSOs) in the redshift range 0.36 ≤ z ≤ 1.686 – a subset of the 78 QSOs we previously studied that also have ${\cal R}_{\rm {Fe\, {\small II}}}$ (flux ratio parameter of UV Fe ii to Mg ii that is used as an accretion-rate proxy) measurements – to simultaneously constrain cosmological model parameters and QSO two-parameter and three-parameter radius–luminosity (R–L) relation parameters in six different cosmological models. We find that these QSO R–L relation parameters are independent of the assumed cosmological model and so these QSOs are standardizable through the R–L relations. Also: (1) With the two-parameter R–L relation, we find that the low-${\cal R}_{\rm {Fe\, {\small II}}}$ and high-${\cal R}_{\rm {Fe\, {\small II}}}$ data subsets obey the same R–L relation within the error bars. (2) Extending the two-parameter R–L relation to a three-parameter one does not result in the hoped-for reduction in the intrinsic dispersion of the R–L relation. (3) Neither of the three-parameter R–L relations provide a significantly better fit to the measurements than does the two-parameter R–L relation. These are promising results for the ongoing development of Mg ii cosmological probes. The first and third of these results differ significantly from those we found elsewhere from analyses of reverberation-measured H β QSOs.

Linking leaf dark respiration to leaf traits and reflectance spectroscopy across diverse forest types

Leaf dark respiration (R dark ), an important yet rarely quantified component of carbon cycling in forest ecosystems, is often simulated from leaf traits such as the maximum carboxylation capacity (V cmax ), leaf mass per area (LMA), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations, in terrestrial biosphere models. However, the validity of these relationships across forest types remains to be thoroughly assessed. Here, in this study, we analyzed R dark variability and its associations with V cmax and other leaf traits across three temperate, subtropical and tropical forests in China, evaluating the effectiveness of leaf spectroscopy as a superior monitoring alternative. We found that leaf magnesium and calcium concentrations were more significant in explaining cross-site R dark than commonly used traits like LMA, N and P concentrations, but univariate trait–R dark relationships were always weak (r 2 ≤ 0.15) and forest-specific. Although multivariate relationships of leaf traits improved the model performance, leaf spectroscopy outperformed trait–R dark relationships, accurately predicted cross-site R dark (r 2 = 0.65) and pinpointed the factors contributing to R dark variability. Our findings reveal a few novel traits with greater cross-site scalability regarding R dark , challenging the use of empirical trait–R dark relationships in process models and emphasize the potential of leaf spectroscopy as a promising alternative for estimating R dark , which could ultimately improve process modeling of terrestrial plant respiration.

Canopy position influences the degree of light suppression of leaf respiration in abundant tree genera in the Amazon Forest

Leaf respiration in the dark (R dark ) and light (R day ) is poorly characterized in diverse tropical ecosystems, and little to no information exists on the degree of light suppression in common tree species within the Amazon basin, and their dependences upon plant functional traits and position within the canopy. We quantified R dark and apparent R day using the Kok method and measured key leaf traits in 26 tree individuals of different species distributed in three different canopy positions: canopy, lower canopy, and understory. To explore the relationships between the leaf traits we used the standardized major axis (SMA). We found that canopy trees had significantly higher rates of R dark and R day than trees in the understory. The difference between R dark and R day (the light suppression of respiration) was greatest in the understory (68 ± 9%, 95% CI) and lower canopy (49 ± 9%, 95% CI) when compared to the canopy (37 ± 10%, 95% CI). We also found that R day was significantly and strongly correlated with R dark (p < 0.001) for all the canopy positions. Also, leaf mass per area (LMA) and leaf Phosphorus concentration (P) had a significant relationship with R dark (p < 0.001; p = 0.003), respectively. In addition, a significant relationship was found for LMA in the canopy and lower canopy positions (p = 0.009; p = 0.048) while P was only significant in the canopy (p = 0.044). Finally, no significant relationship was found between R dark and nitrogen, sugars, and starch. Our results highlight the importance of including representation of the light suppression of leaf respiration in terrestrial biosphere models and also of accounting for vertical gradients within forest canopies and connections with functional traits.

Planck constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio

In this work, we present constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r using Planck data. We use the latest release of Planck maps (PR4), processed with the NPIPE code, which produces calibrated frequency maps in temperature and polarization for all Planck channels from 30 GHz to 857 GHz using the same pipeline. We computed constraints on r using the BB angular power spectrum, and we also discuss constraints coming from the TT spectrum. Given Planck's noise level, the TT spectrum gives constraints on r that are cosmic-variance limited (with $\sigma$ r = 0.093), but we show that the marginalized posterior peaks towards negative values of r at about the 1.2$\sigma$ level. We derived Planck constraints using the BB power spectrum at both large angular scales (the 'reionization bump') and intermediate angular scales (the 'recombination bump') from $\ell$=2 to 150, and find a stronger constraint than that from TT, with $\sigma$ r = 0.069. The Planck BB spectrum shows no systematic bias, and is compatible with zero, given both the statistical noise and the systematic uncertainties. The likelihood analysis using B modes yields the constraint r < 0.158 at 95% confidence using more than 50% of the sky. This upper limit tightens to r < 0.069 when Planck EE, BB, and EB power spectra are combined consistently, and it tightens further to r < 0.056 when the Planck TT power spectrum is included in the combination. Finally, combining Planck with BICEP2/Keck 2015 data yields an upper limit of r < 0.044.

Search for heavy Majorana or Dirac neutrinos and right-handed $W$ gauge bosons in final states with charged leptons and jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy right-handed Majorana or Dirac neutrinos N R and heavy right-handed gauge bosons W R is performed in events with energetic electrons or muons, with the same or opposite electric charge, and energetic jets. The search is carried out separately for topologies of clearly separated final-state products (“resolved” channel) and topologies with boosted final states with hadronic and/or leptonic products partially overlapping and reconstructed as a large-radius jet (“boosted” channel). The events are selected from pp collision data at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected by the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. The results are interpreted within the theoretical framework of a left-right symmetric model, and lower limits are set on masses in the heavy right handed W R boson and N R plane. The excluded region extends to about m(W R ) = 6.4 TeV for both Majorana and Dirac N R neutrinos at m(N R ) < 1 TeV. N R with masses of less than 3.5 (3.6) TeV are excluded in the electron (muon) channel at m(W R ) = 4.8 TeV for the Majorana neutrinos, and lim its of m(N R ) up to 3.6 TeV for m(W R ) = 5.2 (5.0) TeV in the electron (muon) channel are set for the Dirac neutrinos. These constitute the most stringent exclusion limits to date for the model considered.

How Does HF-DFT Achieve Chemical Accuracy for Water Clusters?

Bolstered by recent calculations of exact functional-driven errors (FEs) and density-driven errors (DEs) of semilocal density functionals in the water dimer binding energy , we investigate approximate FEs and DEs in neutral water clusters containing up to 20 monomers, charged water clusters, and alkali- and halide-water clusters. Our proxy for the exact density is r 2 SCAN 50, a 50% global hybrid of exact exchange with r 2 SCAN, which may be less correct than r 2 SCAN for the compact water monomer but importantly more correct for long-range electron transfers in the noncompact water clusters. We show that SCAN makes substantially larger FEs for neutral water clusters than r 2 SCAN, while both make essentially the same DEs. Unlike the case for barrier heights, these FEs are small in a relative sense and become large in an absolute sense only due to an increase in cluster size. SCAN@HF, short for SCAN evaluated on the Hartree–Fock (HF) density, produces a cancellation of errors that makes it chemically accurate for predicting the absolute binding energies of water clusters. Likewise, adding a long-range dispersion correction to r 2 SCAN@HF, as in the composite method HF-r 2 SCAN-DC4, makes its FE more negative than in r 2 SCAN@HF, permitting a near-perfect cancellation of FE and DE. r 2 SCAN by itself (and even more so, r 2 SCAN evaluated on the r 2 SCAN 50 density), is almost perfect for the energy differences between water hexamers, and thus probably also for liquid water away from the boiling point. Thus, the accuracy of composite methods like SCAN@HF and HF-r 2 SCAN-DC4 is not due to the HF density being closer to the exact density, but to a compensation of errors from its greater degree of localization. We also give an argument for the approximate reliability of this unconventional error cancellation for diverse molecular properties. Lastly, we confirm this unconventional error cancellation for the SCAN description of the water trimer via Kohn–Sham inversion of the CCSD(T) density.

Photoluminescence of Cr 3+ in β-Ga 2 O 3 and (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 under pressure

The effects of pressure on single crystals of Cr-doped gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ ) and aluminum gallium oxide [(Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 ] were examined by measuring the wavelength shift in the spectral R lines. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of these materials were collected from samples in diamond anvil cells at pressures up to 9 GPa. The β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ R lines were found to shift linearly under hydrostatic pressure. The (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 R lines also show a linear shift but the R 1 line shifted less than for β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ . The ratio of R 2 to R 1 peak areas vs pressure is dominated by nonradiative recombination. X-ray diffraction measurements of (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 indicate that its equation of state is similar to that of β-Ga 2 O 3 . β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ was examined under non-hydrostatic conditions by using mineral oil as a pressure transmitting medium. Similar to the case in ruby, the R 1 line is much more sensitive to non-hydrostatic stress than R 2 . Spatially resolved PL of a sample at 8 GPa in mineral oil showed significant variations in the R 1 emission wavelength. Furthermore, these results suggest that the R 1 line can serve as a sensitive probe of alloy composition and non-hydrostatic stress, while the R 2 line is insensitive to these perturbations.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: Stellar M/L gradients and the M/L-colour relation in galaxies

The stellar mass-to-light ratio gradient in SDSS r-band ∇(M * /L r ) of a galaxy depends on its mass assembly history, which is imprinted in its morphology and gradients of age, metallicity, and stellar initial mass function (IMF). Taking a MaNGA sample of 2051 galaxies with stellar masses ranging from 10 9 to 10 12 M ⊙ released in SDSS DR15, we focus on face-on galaxies, without merger and bar signatures, and investigate the dependence of the 2D ∇(M * /L r ) on other galaxy properties, including M * /L r -colour relationships by assuming a fixed Salpeter IMF as the mass normalization reference. The median gradient is ∇M * /L r ~ –0.1 (i.e. the M * /L r is larger at the centre) for massive galaxies, becomes flat around M * ~ 10 10 M ⊙ and change sign to ∇M * /L r ~ 0.1 at the lowest masses. The M * /L r inside a half-light radius increases with increasing galaxy stellar mass; in each mass bin, early-type galaxies have the highest value, while pure-disc late-type galaxies have the smallest. Correlation analyses suggest that the mass-weighted stellar age is the dominant parameter influencing the M * /L r profile, since a luminosity-weighted age is easily affected by star formation when the specific star formation rate (sSFR) inside the half-light radius is higher than 10 –3 Gyr –1 . With increased sSFR gradient, one can obtain a steeper negative ∇(M * /L r ). The scatter in the slopes of M * /L-colour relations increases with increasing sSFR, for example, the slope for post-starburst galaxies can be flattened to 0.45 from the global value 0.87 in the M * /L versus g – r diagram. Hence converting galaxy colours to M * /L should be done carefully, especially for those galaxies with young luminosity-weighted stellar ages, which can have quite different star formation histories.

Investigating the architecture and internal structure of the TOI-561 system planets with CHEOPS, HARPS-N, and TESS

ABSTRACT We present a precise characterization of the TOI-561 planetary system obtained by combining previously published data with TESS and CHEOPS photometry, and a new set of 62 HARPS-N radial velocities (RVs). Our joint analysis confirms the presence of four transiting planets, namely TOI-561 b (P = 0.45 d, R = 1.42 R⊕, M = 2.0 M⊕), c (P = 10.78 d, R = 2.91 R⊕, M = 5.4 M⊕), d (P = 25.7 d, R = 2.82 R⊕, M = 13.2 M⊕), and e (P = 77 d, R = 2.55 R⊕, M = 12.6 R⊕). Moreover, we identify an additional, long-period signal (>450 d) in the RVs, which could be due to either an external planetary companion or to stellar magnetic activity. The precise masses and radii obtained for the four planets allowed us to conduct interior structure and atmospheric escape modelling. TOI-561 b is confirmed to be the lowest density (ρb = 3.8 ± 0.5 g cm−3) ultra-short period (USP) planet known to date, and the low metallicity of the host star makes it consistent with the general bulk density-stellar metallicity trend. According to our interior structure modelling, planet b has basically no gas envelope, and it could host a certain amount of water. In contrast, TOI-561 c, d, and e likely retained an H/He envelope, in addition to a possibly large water layer. The inferred planetary compositions suggest different atmospheric evolutionary paths, with planets b and c having experienced significant gas loss, and planets d and e showing an atmospheric content consistent with the original one. The uniqueness of the USP planet, the presence of the long-period planet TOI-561 e, and the complex architecture make this system an appealing target for follow-up studies.

A demonstration of improved constraints on primordial gravitational waves with delensing

We present a constraint on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, derived from measurements of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization $B$-modes with "delensing,'' whereby the uncertainty on $r$ contributed by the sample variance of the gravitational lensing $B$-modes is reduced by cross-correlating against a lensing $B$-mode template. This template is constructed by combining an estimate of the polarized CMB with a tracer of the projected large-scale structure. The large-scale-structure tracer used is a map of the cosmic infrared background derived from Planck satellite data, while the polarized CMB map comes from a combination of South Pole Telescope, BICEP/Keck, and Planck data. We expand the BICEP/Keck likelihood analysis framework to accept a lensing template and apply it to the BICEP/Keck data set collected through 2014 using the same parametric foreground modelling as in the previous analysis. From simulations, we find that the uncertainty on $r$ is reduced by $\sim10\%$, from $\sigma(r)$= 0.024 to 0.022, which can be compared with a $\sim26\%$ reduction obtained when using a perfect lensing template. Applying the technique to the real data, the constraint on $r$ is improved from $r_{0.05} < 0.090$ to $r_{0.05} < 0.082$ (95% C.L.). Furthermore, this is the first demonstration of improvement in an $r$ constraint through delensing.

Proton-Catalyzed Interconversion of Tungsten(VI) Imido Isopropylidene and Propylene Complexes

Additions of two equivalents of (CF 3 ) 3 COH (R F9 OH) or (CF 3 ) 2 MeCOH (R F6 OH) to W(NAr) 2 R 2 complexes (Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, R = n-propyl or i-propyl) offer the opportunity to synthesize propylene or isopropylidene olefin metathesis-active complexes in the absence of free propylene. Propylene and isopropylidene complexes (W(NAr)(ArNH 2 )(OR F9 ) 2 (propylene) and W(NAr)(ArNH 2 )(OR F9 ) 2 (CMe 2 )) are formed at room temperature from both W(NAr) 2 (i-propyl) 2 and W(NAr) 2 (n-propyl) 2 complexes upon addition of two equivalents of R F9 OH; no W = CHCH 2 Me complexes are observed. Similar results are found for W(NAd) 2 (propyl) 2 complexes (Ad = 1-adamantyl). Both RNH 2 and RNH 2 B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 (R = Ar or Ad) catalyze the interconversion of propylene and isopropylidene complexes. Addition of R F6 OH to W(NAr) 2 R 2 or W(NAd) 2 R 2 complexes leads to mixtures that contain largely propylene complexes. Addition of (CF 3 )Me 2 COH (R F3 OH) to W(NAr) 2 (i-Pr) 2 yields only propylene complexes. One propylene complex, W(NAd)(OR F9 ) 2 (CH 2 ═CHMe)(dme), was isolated, structurally characterized, and found to react with AdNH 2 to reform W(NAd)(OR F9 ) 2 (CMe 2 )(AdNH 2 ). Furthermore, it is proposed that propylene and isopropylidene complexes interconvert through the formation of an intermediate isopropyl complex.

TOI-2076 and TOI-1807: Two Young, Comoving Planetary Systems within 50 pc Identified by TESS that are Ideal Candidates for Further Follow Up

We report the discovery of two planetary systems around comoving stars: TOI-2076 (TIC 27491137) and TOI-1807 (TIC 180695581). TOI-2076 is a nearby (41.9 pc) multiplanetary system orbiting a young (204 ± 50 Myr), bright (K = 7.115 in TIC v8.1) start. TOI-1807 hosts a single transiting planet and is similarly nearby (42.58 pc), similarly young (180 ± 40 Myr ), and bright. Both targets exhibit significant, periodic variability due to starspots, characteristic of their young ages. Using photometric data collected by TESS we identify three transiting planets around TOI-2076 with radii of R {sub b} = 3.3 ± 0.04 R {sub ⊕}, R {sub c} = 4.4 ± 0.05 R {sub ⊕}, and R {sub d} = 4.1 ± 0.07 R {sub ⊕}. Planet TOI-2076b has a period of P {sub b} = 10.356 days. For both TOI-2076c and d, TESS observed only two transits, separated by a 2 yr interval in which no data were collected, preventing a unique period determination. A range of long periods (<17 days) are consistent with the data. We identify a short-period planet around TOI-1807 with a radius of R {sub b} = 1.8 ± 0.04 R {sub ⊕} and a period of P {sub b} = 0.549 days. Their close proximity, and bright, cool host stars, and young ages make these planets excellent candidates for follow up. TOI-1807b is one of the best-known small (R < 2 R{sub ⊕}) planets for characterization via eclipse spectroscopy and phase curves with JWST. TOI-1807b is the youngest ultra-short-period planet discovered to date, providing valuable constraints on formation timescales of short-period planets. Given the rarity of young planets, particularly in multiple-planet systems, these planets present an unprecedented opportunity to study and compare exoplanet formation, and young planet atmospheres, at a crucial transition age for formation theory.

Production of pions, kaons, and protons as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

The production of π ± , K ± , and (p¯)p is measured in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV in different topological regions of the events. Particle transverse momentum (p T ) spectra are measured in the “toward”, “transverse”, and “away” angular regions defined with respect to the direction of the leading particle in the event. While the toward and away regions contain the fragmentation products of the near-side and away-side jets, respectively, the transverse region is dominated by particles from the Underlying Event (UE). The relative transverse activity classifier, R T = N T / < N T >, is used to group events according to their UE activity, where N T is the measured charged-particle multiplicity per event in the transverse region and < N T > is the mean value over all the analysed events. The first measurements of identified particle p T spectra as a function of R T in the three topological regions are reported. It is found that the yield of high transverse momentum particles relative to the R T -integrated measurement decreases with increasing R T in both the toward and the away regions, indicating that the softer UE dominates particle production as R T increases and validating that R T can be used to control the magnitude of the UE. Conversely, the spectral shapes in the transverse region harden significantly with increasing R T . This hardening follows a mass ordering, being more significant for heavier particles. Finally, it is observed that the pT-differential particle ratios (p+p¯)/(π + +π – ) and (K + + K – )/(π + + π – ) in the low UE limit (R T → 0) approach expectations from Monte Carlo generators such as PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC, where the jet-fragmentation models have been tuned to reproduce e + e – results.

New Phosphoranylideneketenes and Phosphoranylidenethioketenes‐Synthesis, Structure, Spectroscopy, and Lewis Base Properties

Posphoranylideneketene Ph 3 PCCO and its sulfur analogue, Ph 3 PCCS, are cumulated ylides that exhibit diverse reactivity and distinct structural features. Herein, we present the first systematic study of substituent effects on the structures and bonding of a series of aryl- and alkyl-substituted phosphoranylideneketenes, R 3 PCCO [R = Et, cyclohexyl, NMe 2 , 4-Me 2 N-C 6 H 4 , 4-MeO-C 6 H 4 , 4-CF 3 -C 6 H 4 , 3,5-(CF 3 ) 2 -C 6 H 3 ], prepared from the corresponding phosphonium salts, [R 3 PCH 2 COOEt]X (X = Br, I) and two equivalents of Na[N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ]. Multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, supported by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealed that the bond strength within the central P═C═C═O fragment increases with the electron-deficiency of the aryl substituents at phosphorus. The corresponding phosphoranylidenethioketenes, R 3 PCCS (R = Et, cyclohexyl, NMe 2 , 4-Me 2 N-C 6 H 4 , 4-MeO-C 6 H 4 , 4-CF 3 -C 6 H 4 ), were obtained by reactions of R 3 PCCO with CS 2 . Here, the rate of conversion of R 3 PCCO into R 3 PCCS decreases with increasing electron deficiency at phosphorus. Both R 3 PCCO and R 3 PCCS act as relatively weak ambidentate Lewis donors, yet they form stable acid-base adducts with strong Lewis acids such as B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 and Al(C 6 F 5 ) 3 .

Metal fluxes at the sediment–water interface in a free water surface constructed wetland

Metal biogeochemistry in the sediment, water, and the sediment–water interface (SWI) was studied in a free water surface constructed wetland. Concentrations of labile copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), sulfate, chloride, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured with the diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) and peeper. A good agreement between peeper- and DGT-measured metals was observed for Cu (regression r 2 = 0.3, 95% CI of the slopes > 0), but not for Zn (95% CI of the slopes overlapped with 0), which was attributed to the different complexed compounds between Cu and Zn in porewater. The depth profile of labile metals in sediment porewater varied with time and was consistent with the solid-phase metal deposition, showing higher concentrations in the surface layer (3 to –3 cm) than in the bottom layer (–4 to –13 cm). The depth-averaged labile Cu and Zn concentrations measured by DGT were 1.0 and 3.1 µg/L, and labile sulfate, chloride, and DOC concentrations measured by peeper were 1.8, 3.6, and 2.1 mg/L, respectively. A sharp decrease in sulfate occurred in September when sulfate concentrations became the lowest among sampling months. This was caused by the seasonal sulfur cycles in the wetland, where the dominant sulfur reaction is sulfate reduction in warm seasons and sulfide oxidation in cold seasons. Different metal-removal mechanisms were observed in the two wetland cells; sulfur dynamics controlled the removal processes in the cell without frequent disturbance but failed to influence metal removal in the cell with frequent disturbance due to the interruption of anoxic layers. The flux ratios that compare labile element concentrations between the water column and the SWI (R-Cu, R-Zn, R-DOC, R-sulfate, and R-chloride) were generated to determine metal diffusive fluxes at the interface. Labile Zn was mostly transported from the water to the SWI during all seasons (R-Zn < 1 for all months except January). Labile Cu moved from the SWI to the water during the warm months (R-Cu < 1), which was explained by the bioturbation-induced transport of organic matter based on the positive correlations between R-Cu and R-DOC. In general, sediment can serve either as a sink or a source depending on the environmental conditions, metal speciation, and presence of living organisms. Here, metal flux at the SWI is a key component in the biogeochemical cycling of a constructed wetland.

Correction to “Frank–Kasper Phases of Diblock Copolymer Melts Studied with the DPD Model: SCF Results”

In a recent study, (1) we performed the self-consistent field (SCF) calculations of a dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) model of conformationally asymmetric diblock copolymer A-B melts to study the stability of various Frank–Kasper (FK) phases formed by such A-B melts. While all the equations in ref (1) are correct, we did not calculate the dimensionless (mean-field) Helmholtz free energies per chain βf c = βu c,χ + βu c,κ – s c /k B and the dimensionless stresses dβf c /dθ of ordered phases accurately. For example, the dimensionless (nonbonded) internal energy per chain due to the system compressibility βu c,κ = (N/2κ)∑ q βû 0 (|q|)(ϕ̂ A (q) + ϕ̂ B (q) – δ q,0 )(ϕ̂ A (−q) + ϕ̂ B (−q) – δ– q,0 ) should be calculated in the reciprocal space as given (note that βû 0 (|q|) is obtained analytically, and that since ϕ A (r) is real 𝜙̂ A (−𝐪)= $\overline{𝜙̂ A}$(𝐪), i.e., the complex conjugate of ϕ̂ A (q)); this corresponds to numerically evaluating βu c,κ = (N/2κ)∫dr(ϕ A (r) + ϕ B (r) – 1)ψ(r) with ψ(r) ≡ (∫dr′βu 0 (|r–r′|)(ϕ A (r′) + ϕ B (r′) – 1)/V in the real space via the (composite) trapezoidal rule. While the trapezoidal rule is less accurate than the Romberg integration (2) in general, the opposite occurs when the integration domain is periodic; this was pointed out by Matsen in ref (3) and explained in detail in refs (4and5). With our ignorance of this exceptional convergence property of the trapezoidal rule for periodic functions, we calculated all convolutions having the form of ψ(r) in the reciprocal space via the fast Fourier transforms (6) but those having the form of βu c,κ in the real space via Romberg integration; the latter leads to inaccurate results and unfortunately incorrect phase diagrams reported in ref (1), which are corrected here.
