Notes on Davis EOS: Historical Perspective, Derivations & Physical Considerations

Davis reactant and product semi-empirical EOS have been introduced in a series of publications by W. C. Davis. These EOS are convenient to use in conjunction with reactive burn models to parameterize the thermodynamic response of quiescent high explosives (HE) and the mixture of HE decomposition products. There is a history of development of these EOS with different formulae and functional forms found in different papers. The goal of the present notes is to track that history, clarify the physical motivation behind various modifications to Davis EOS over time, and collect all the relevant formulae in one place.

An Overview of the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database–Thermophysical, Version 2.1.1 (MSTDB-TP v.2.1.1)

The current status of the Molten Salt Thermodynamic Database- Thermal Physical (MSTDB-TP) is reported. Building off of MSTDB-TP and through the direction of the Roadmap for thermal property measurement of Molten Salt Reactor systems, MSTDB-TP 2.1.1 has now been released containing a total 448 salt entries (data from 140+independent studies) compared to the original commit of 62, containing thermophysical properties including density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity. Along with the new database release, further advancement of Saline, a C++application programming interface (API), and a graphical user interface (GUI) has facilitated increased user/developer interaction with the database. Furthermore, estimation techniques, first principles calculations (Ab-Initio) and interpolation/extrapolation methods (Redlich-Kister/Muggianu), have shown great promise in the future of thermophysical property determination for filling out compositional spaces and investigating experimentally difficult salts (hazardous/expensive). This report describes the database composition, development and advancement of database tools, and the strategy of advancing and implementing estimation data into future iterations of the database for MSTDB-TP.

Athena-I CUBIT Journal Files

The Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP)1 transport code version 6 (also known as MCNP6) has the capability for tracking particles on unstructured mesh (UM) geometry models embedded into con structive solid geometry (CSG) cells. This feature has been developed for performing calculations of complex geometry models because manually creating CSG models is a time-consuming and error prone process as the complexities of geometries increase. The UM capability was originally designed to work with UM models created with the Abaqus software and ASCII input files that it generates. The MCNP code version 6.0 and later can process UM models formatted as Abaqus input files. Starting with version 6.3, MCNP can also process HDF5 mesh input files. External codes must be used to generate Abaqus input files for MCNP UM calculations. CUBIT, the Sandia National Laboratory automated mesh generation toolkit, can generate a UM model formatted as an Abaqus input file. However, the Abaqus input files exported from CUBIT cannot be used for MCNP simulations because it lacks the proper syntax. A Python script was developed to convert an Abaqus file created by CUBIT to an Abaqus file format that MCNP can process. Creating UM models for complex geometries is not an easy task. The process of creating UM models in CUBIT for MCNP simulations is detailed in. CUBIT provides several user interface options including a graphical user interface (GUI) and a command line interface. A GUI provides an easy way to use CUBIT without learning the CUBIT command syntax. When using CUBIT with either interface option, command lines are written into an ASCII file known as a journal file; this journal file can be edited and archived so that it can be played back in CUBIT to automatically generate a UM model. This report describes the CUBIT journal files of the UM models developed for Athena-I. The Athena platform, an energy-tuning assembly, was developed to spectrally shape the National Ignition Facility (NIF) deuterium-tritium fusion neutron source to a thermonuclear (fusion) plus prompt fission neutron spectrum with capability to act as a short-pulse neutron source. MCNP6 was used for the Athena experiment design analysis.

Earth Filter Mathematica Toolbox V4 User’s Guide: Simplifying, Visualizing and Quick Modeling of All Fission Products from 60 Nuclear Sources

The Earth Filter Mathematica toolbox is a set of user-friendly routines that accurately calculate the ingrowth and decay of any of the 908 fission products for an infinite combination of sources over a large dynamic range and large time scales. This toolbox was developed by Dr. W. P. Brug at Los Alamos National Laboratory and eliminates the need for the user to define and solve differential equations by automatically scanning the ENDF-349 dataset and creating a complete set of differential equations (including delayed neutron branches to both the ground and metastable states) for every fission product. Additionally, this code allows the user to choose the data source for half-lives from several key references (i.e., TORI, IAEA, ENDF or NUDAT.) The complete set of ENDF-349 independent and cumulative fission yields for all 60 isotopic targets and 4 different neutron spectrums are included. This allows nearly any nuclear fission source to be accurately modeled as a linear combination of endpoint sources. The Earth Filter Toolbox has no limit as to the length of split list, and split lists of 5 or more endpoint sources can be quite common.

PMT-004 Validation Testing for Thermal Scattering Laws and Some Interesting Temperature-Dependent Implications [Slides]

This presentation finds that PMT-004 has four new benchmark cases highly sensitive to PE TSL (2 cases) and PMMA TSL (2 Cases). Additionally discovered was that the PE cases were well predicted using MCNP6.2 and ENDF/B-VIII.0. PMMA cases overpredicted by approximately 0.6-0.7% in k eff likely due to the lack of integral benchmarks sensitive to PMMA. The NCSU ENDF/B-VIII.1 PMMA TSL is an improvement over VIII.0. This was Accepted at last ICSBEP meeting pending comment resolution, should be published in 2024 version of the Handbook. It was found that temperature had a large impact on reactivity of the critical configuration. This has Implications for validation work for thermal cases- need to adjust TSL data to correct temperature as it can have hundreds of pcm effects for a few °C. Future thermal experiments should try and measure reactivity at multiple temperatures to add in data testing and benchmark adjustment.
