Meso-beta scale numerical simulation studies of terrain-induced jet streak mass/momentum perturbations

The first section is on 3-D numerical modeling of terrain-induced circulations and covers the following: (1) additional insights into gravity wave generation mechanisms based on the control simulation; (2) ongoing nested-grid numerical simulations; (3) work to be completed during the remainder of FY-93; and (4) work objectives for FY-94. The second section is on linear theory and theoretical modeling and covers the following: (1) the free response of a uniform barotropic flow to an initially stationary unbalanced (ageostrophic) zonal wind anomaly; and (2) the free response of a uniform barotropic flow to an initially stationary balanced zonal wind anomaly.

The design of two-stage-to-orbit vehicles

Two separate student design groups developed conceptual designs for a two-stage-to-orbit vehicle, with each design group consisting of a carrier team and an orbiter team. A two-stage-to-orbit system is considered in the event that single-stage-to-orbit is deemed not feasible in the foreseeable future; the two-stage system would also be used as a complement to an already existing heavy lift vehicle. The design specifications given are to lift a 10,000-lb payload 27 ft long by 10 ft diameter, to low Earth orbit (300 n.m.) using an air breathing carrier configuration that will take off horizontally within 15,000 ft. The staging Mach number and altitude were to be determined by the design groups. One group designed a delta wing/body carrier with the orbiter nested within the fuselage of the carrier, and the other group produced a blended cranked-delta wing/body carrier with the orbiter in the more conventional piggyback configuration. Each carrier used liquid hydrogen-fueled turbofanramjet engines, with data provided by General Electric Aircraft Engine Group. While one orbiter used a full-scale Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME), the other orbiter employed a half-scale SSME coupled with scramjet engines, with data again provided by General Electric. The two groups conceptual designs, along with the technical trade-offs, difficulties, and details that surfaced during the design process are presented.

The Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO): Visible light coronal imaging and spectroscopy

The Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO) is a triple coronagraph being jointly developed for the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission. LASCO comprises three nested coronagraphs (C1, C2, and C3) that image the solar corona for 1.1 to 30 solar radii (C1: 1.1 to 3 solar radii, C2: 1.5 to 6 solar radii, and C3: 3 to 30.0 solar radii). The inner coronagraph (C1) is a newly developed mirror version of the classic Lyot coronagraph without an external occultor, while the middle coronagraph (C2) and the outer coronagraph (C3) are externally occulted instruments. High resolution coronal spectroscopy from 1.1 to 3 R solar radii can be performed by using a Fabry-Perot interferometer, which is part of C1. High volume memories and a high speed microprocessor enable extensive onboard image processing. Image compression by factors of 10 to 20 will result in the transmission of 10 to 20 full images per hour.

A new interface element for connecting independently modeled substructures

A new interface element based on the hybrid variational formulation is presented and demonstrated. The element provides a means of connecting independently modeled substructures whose nodes along the common boundary need not be coincident. The interface element extends previous work to include connecting an arbitrary number of substructures, the use of closed and generally curved interfaces, and the use of multiple, possibly nested, interfaces. Several applications of the element are presented and aspects of the implementation are discussed.

Calibration of the Verification Engineering Test Article-I (VETA-I) for AXAF using the VETA-I X-ray Detection System

Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) X-ray optics testing is conducted by VETA-I, which consists of six nested Wolter type I grazing-incidence mirrors; VETA's X-ray Detection System (VXDS) in turn measures the imaging properties of VETA-I, yielding FWHM and encircled energy of the X-ray image obtained, as well as its effective area. VXDS contains a high resolution microchannel plate imaging X-ray detector and a pinhole scanning system in front of proportional-counter detectors. VETA-I's X-ray optics departs from the AXAF flight configuration in that it uses a temporary holding fixture; its mirror elements are not cut to final length, and are not coated with the metal film used to maximize high-energy reflection.

The formation of protostellar disks. I - 1 M(solar)

Hydrodynamical calculations of the collapse of an axisymmetric, rotating one solar mass protostellar cloud, including the effects of radiative transfer and radiative acceleration but without magnetic fields, are presented. The results include calculations of infrared protostellar spectra as a function of time and viewing angle. A numerical algorithm involving explicit nested grids is used to resolve the region of initial disk formation and at the same time to include the outer regions in the calculation. The central part of the protostar is modeled approximately. Initial conditions are systematically varied to investigate their influence on the evolution and final configuration of central star plus circumstellar disk. The initial state for the standard case is a centrally condensed molecular cloud core of one solar mass with a mean density of 8 x 10 exp -18 g/cu cm and a specific angular momentum at the outer edge of 7 x 10 exp 20 sq cm/s. The collapse is followed for 8 x 10 exp 4 yr, at which point 0.45 solar mass is contained in a rapidly rotating central object and most of the remainder in a surrounding equilibrium disk. The stability of this final structure is qualitatively analyzed.

Optimization by decomposition

An algorithm is presented for solving the structural optimization problem as a set of smaller subproblems that correspond to levels of nested substructures. In all three of the algorithm variants presented, the matching was assisted by means of the behavior and optimum sensitivity derivatives. The algorithm is noted to be intrinsically germane to distributed computing, since the subproblems can be concurrently addressed; the algorithm can also be generalized to those multidisciplinary systems whose subsystems can be arranged into a hierarchy of substructure-like dependencies.

The solar cycle; Proceedings of the National Solar Observatory/Sacramento Peak 12th Summer Workshop, Sunspot, NM, Oct. 15-18, 1991

Attention is given to a flux-transport model, the effect of fractal distribution on the evolution of solar surface magnetic fields, active nests on the sun, magnetic flux transport in solar active regions, recent advances in stellar cycle research, magnetic intermittency on the sun, a search for existence of large-scale motions on the sun, and new solar cycle data from the NASA/NSO spectromagnetograph. Attention is also given to the solar cycle variation of coronal temperature during cycle 22, the distribution of the north-south asymmetry for the various activity cycles, solar luminosity variation, a two-parameter model of total solar irradiance variation over the solar cycle, the origin of the solar cycle, nonlinear feedbacks in the solar dynamo, and long-term dynamics of the solar cycle.

Electromagnetically driven relativistic jets - A class of self-consistent numerical solutions

We explore the generalized Grad-Shafranov (GS) equation (Lovelace et al. 1986), which describes the cross-field balance of the magnetic flux surfaces in a stationary, axisymmetric, cold relativistic MHD wind. We construct a family of self-consistent, jet-type, non-self-similar solutions in which flux surfaces thread the equatorial plane vertically and are eventually collimated into nested cylinders. These solutions conserve the total energy and angular momentum along each flux surface and satisfy the relativistic GS equation in the cross-field direction. We find that the total specific energy in the flow depends primarily on a dimensionless combination of the poloidal magnetic flux, the rotation, and the mass loading rate, which reduces to Michel's (1969) magnetization parameter for radial winds. The final width of the flow and its ratio of kinetic energy flux to Poynting flux depend sensitively on the pressure distribution of the ambient medium, which is required to contain the jet at its outer edge when no jet-confirming external toroidal magnetic field is present. Furthermore, we show that the magnetic pressure in the flow can be much higher near the axis than close to the edge, reflecting the 'pinching' effect of the toroidal magnetic field.

Morphotectonics of Venus

Venus topography can be mapped morphostructurally to reveal nested hierarchical patterns of quasi-circular upland/lowland complexes. These patterns are interpreted as surficial effects of hierarchically structured, long-acting mantle convection. Beta Regio, Alpha Regio, and Artemis illustrate this process of dynamical interaction between the deforming lithosphere and the convecting mantle.

Analysis of interstellar fragmentation structure based on IRAS images

The goal of this project was to develop new tools for the analysis of the structure of densely sampled maps of interstellar star-forming regions. A particular emphasis was on the recognition and characterization of nested hierarchical structure and fractal irregularity, and their relation to the level of star formation activity. The panoramic IRAS images provided data with the required range in spatial scale, greater than a factor of 100, and in column density, greater than a factor of 50. In order to construct a densely sampled column density map of a cloud complex which is both self-gravitating and not (yet?) stirred up much by star formation, a column density image of the Taurus region has been constructed from IRAS data. The primary drawback to using the IRAS data for this purpose is that it contains no velocity information, and the possible importance of projection effects must be kept in mind.

Analysis of interstellar cloud structure based on IRAS images

The goal of this project was to develop new tools for the analysis of the structure of densely sampled maps of interstellar star-forming regions. A particular emphasis was on the recognition and characterization of nested hierarchical structure and fractal irregularity, and their relation to the level of star formation activity. The panoramic IRAS images provided data with the required range in spatial scale, greater than a factor of 100, and in column density, greater than a factor of 50. In order to construct densely sampled column density maps of star-forming clouds, column density images of four nearby cloud complexes were constructed from IRAS data. The regions have various degrees of star formation activity, and most of them have probably not been affected much by the disruptive effects of young massive stars. The largest region, the Scorpius-Ophiuchus cloud complex, covers about 1000 square degrees (it was subdivided into a few smaller regions for analysis). Much of the work during the early part of the project focused on an 80 square degree region in the core of the Taurus complex, a well-studied region of low-mass star formation.

Dynamic Forms. Part 1: Functions

The formalism of dynamic forms is developed as a means for organizing and systematizing the design control systems. The formalism allows the designer to easily compute derivatives to various orders of large composite functions that occur in flight-control design. Such functions involve many function-of-a-function calls that may be nested to many levels. The component functions may be multiaxis, nonlinear, and they may include rotation transformations. A dynamic form is defined as a variable together with its time derivatives up to some fixed but arbitrary order. The variable may be a scalar, a vector, a matrix, a direction cosine matrix, Euler angles, or Euler parameters. Algorithms for standard elementary functions and operations of scalar dynamic forms are developed first. Then vector and matrix operations and transformations between parameterization of rotations are developed in the next level in the hierarchy. Commonly occurring algorithms in control-system design, including inversion of pure feedback systems, are developed in the third level. A large-angle, three-axis attitude servo and other examples are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the developed formalism. All algorithms were implemented in FORTRAN code. Practical experience shows that the proposed formalism may significantly improve the productivity of the design and coding process.

Computational techniques for high-speed flows with viscous and chemical effects

Algorithms for solving the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with chemical kinetic equations are presented. The convective flux is estimated from a quasi one dimensional interpolation procedure. Shock, contact, and expansion waves and thermochemical nonequilibrium phenomena are captured by the Lax-Friedrichs technique. Relaxation techniques were developed to enhance their effectiveness in dealing with spatial and temporal stiffness associated with the physical problems. Both explicit and implicit smoothers were implemented into the standard multigrid time stepping method. Unsteady and steady scalar problems are discussed. A perfect gas and equilibrium air shock tube problem is investigated. Numerical schemes and techniques are compared for the problems of shock and boundary layer interaction and three dimensional viscous, nonequilibrium flow encompassing an aerobrake. The results are comparable in accuracy against other high order non-oscillatory techniques. The multigrid methods are assessed using a Mach 8 flow over a complete planar body, a sphere, and a blunt delta wing at 20 deg incidence. Applying an implicit multigrid method on a nested grid of 128 by 64 nodes the reduction factor is 0.25. The central processing unit reduction factor is 2.2 after both the single and multigrid Runge-Kutta solutions converged to machine zero on a grid of 37 by 41 by 73 nodes.

A structured data transfer protocol

The transfer of data between different computers and programs can be a major obstacle during data analysis. We present a new data transfer protocol which is based on a simple structure containing a value, an error, and a unit. Each of these members can be arrays or another structure. The ability to nest structures allows for the concept of objects. When using an object-oriented language such as C++, reference can be made to the object name instead of each element explicitly. Prototype code has been written which implements the basic design with enhancements planned for the future.

Unstructured grid large eddy simulation of wall bounded turbulent flows

Historically, large eddy simulations (LES) have been restricted to simple geometries where spectral or finite difference methods have dominated due to their efficient use of structured grids. Structured grids, however, not only have difficulty representing complex domains and adapting to complicated flow features, but also are rather inefficient for simulating flows at high Reynolds numbers. The lack of efficiency stems from the need to resolve the viscous sub layer which requires very fine resolution in all three directions near the wall. Structured grids make use of a stretching to reduce the normal grid spacing but must carry the fine resolution in the streamwise and spanwise directions throughout the domain. The unnecessarily fine grid for much of the domain leads to disturbingly high grid estimates. Chapman (1979), and later Moin & Jimenez (1993), pointed out that, in order to advance the technology to airfoils at flight Reynolds numbers, structured grids must be abandoned in lieu of what are known as nested or unstructured grids. We illustrate the ability of an unstructured mesh to refine only the near wall region. Note the large number of points near the wall (where the fine vortical features need better resolution) and the coarseness in all directions away from the wall (where the scales are much larger). The important difference between this approach and the usual structured grid stretching is that the number of elements used to discretize the spanwise and streamwise features of the flow is reduced in each successive layer coming off the wall. This is due to the fact that the elements not only grow in the normal direction, but in the other directions as well. This greatly reduces the total number of points or elements required for a given Reynolds number flow.

Examples of data assimilation in mesoscale models

The keynote address was the problem of physical initialization of mesoscale models. The classic purpose of physical or diabatic initialization is to reduce or eliminate the spin-up error caused by the lack, at the initial time, of the fully developed vertical circulations required to support regions of large rainfall rates. However, even if a model has no spin-up problem, imposition of observed moisture and heating rate information during assimilation can improve quantitative precipitation forecasts, especially early in the forecast. The two key issues in physical initialization are the choice of assimilating technique and sources of hydrologic/hydrometeor data. Another example of data assimilation in mesoscale models was presented in a series of meso-beta scale model experiments with and 11 km version of the MASS model designed to investigate the sensitivity of convective initiation forced by thermally direct circulations resulting from differential surface heating to four dimensional assimilation of surface and radar data. The results of these simulations underscore the need to accurately initialize and simulate grid and sub-grid scale clouds in meso- beta scale models. The status of the application of the CSU-RAMS mesoscale model by the NOAA Forecast Systems Lab for producing real-time forecasts with 10-60 km mesh resolutions over (4000 km)(exp 2) domains for use by the aviation community was reported. Either MAPS or LAPS model data are used to initialize the RAMS model on a 12-h cycle. The use of MAPS (Mesoscale Analysis and Prediction System) model was discussed. Also discussed was the mesobeta-scale data assimilation using a triply-nested nonhydrostatic version of the MM5 model.

An integrated runtime and compile-time approach for parallelizing structured and block structured applications

Scientific and engineering applications often involve structured meshes. These meshes may be nested (for multigrid codes) and/or irregularly coupled (called multiblock or irregularly coupled regular mesh problems). A combined runtime and compile-time approach for parallelizing these applications on distributed memory parallel machines in an efficient and machine-independent fashion was described. A runtime library which can be used to port these applications on distributed memory machines was designed and implemented. The library is currently implemented on several different systems. To further ease the task of application programmers, methods were developed for integrating this runtime library with compilers for HPK-like parallel programming languages. How this runtime library was integrated with the Fortran 90D compiler being developed at Syracuse University is discussed. Experimental results to demonstrate the efficacy of our approach are presented. A multiblock Navier-Stokes solver template and a multigrid code were experimented with. Our experimental results show that our primitives have low runtime communication overheads. Further, the compiler parallelized codes perform within 20 percent of the code parallelized by manually inserting calls to the runtime library.
