Dynamical exponent of a quantum critical itinerant ferromagnet: A Monte Carlo study

Here we consider the effect of the coupling between two-dimensional (2D) quantum rotors near an XY ferromagnetic quantum critical point and spins of itinerant fermions. We analyze how this coupling affects the dynamics of rotors and the self-energy of fermions. A common belief is that near a q = 0 ferromagnetic transition, fermions induce an Ω/q Landau damping of rotors (i.e., the dynamical critical exponent is z = 3) and Landau overdamped rotors give rise to non-Fermi liquid fermionic self-energy Σ∝ω 2/3 . This behavior has been confirmed in previous quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) studies. Here we show that for the XY case the behavior is different. We report the results of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which show that at small frequencies z = 2 and Σ∝ω 1/2 . We argue that the new behavior is associated with the fact that a fermionic spin is by itself not a conserved quantity due to spin-spin coupling to rotors, and a combination of self-energy and vertex corrections replaces 1/q in the Landau damping by a constant. We discuss the implication of these results to experiments.

A hybrid approach to excited-state-specific variational Monte Carlo and doubly excited states

We extend our hybrid linear-method/accelerated-descent variational Monte Carlo optimization approach to excited states and investigate its efficacy in double excitations. In addition to showing a superior statistical efficiency when compared to the linear method, our tests on small molecules show good energetic agreement with benchmark methods. We also demonstrate the ability to treat double excitations in systems that are too large for a full treatment by using selected configuration interaction methods via an application to 4-aminobenzonitrile. Finally, we investigate the stability of state-specific variance optimization against collapse to other states’ variance minima and find that symmetry, Ansatz quality, and sample size all have roles to play in achieving stability.

Multi-fidelity Uncertainty Quantification for Homogenization Problems in Structure-Property Relationships from Crystal Plasticity Finite Elements

Crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) has been an integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) workhorse to study materials behaviors and structure-property relationships for the last few decades. These relations are mappings from the microstructure space to the materials properties space. Due to the stochastic and random nature of microstructures, there is always some uncertainty associated with materials properties, for example, in homogenized stress-strain curves. For critical applications with strong reliability needs, it is often desirable to quantify the microstructure-induced uncertainty in the context of structure-property relationships. However, this uncertainty quantification (UQ) problem often incurs a large computational cost because many statistically equivalent representative volume elements (SERVEs) are needed. In this article, we apply a multi-level Monte Carlo (MLMC) method to CPFEM to study the uncertainty in stress-strain curves, given an ensemble of SERVEs at multiple mesh resolutions. By using the information at coarse meshes, we show that it is possible to approximate the response at fine meshes with a much reduced computational cost. We focus on problems where the model output is multi-dimensional, which requires us to track multiple quantities of interest (QoIs) at the same time. In conclusion, our numerical results show that MLMC can accelerate UQ tasks around 2.23x, compared to the classical Monte Carlo (MC) method, which is widely known as ensemble average in the CPFEM literature.

Numerical simulation of rarefied gas flow through a slit

Two different approaches, the finite-difference method coupled with the discrete-ordinate method (FDDO), and the direct-simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, are used in the analysis of the flow of a rarefied gas from one reservoir to another through a two-dimensional slit. The cases considered are for hard vacuum downstream pressure, finite pressure ratios, and isobaric pressure with thermal diffusion, which are not well established in spite of the simplicity of the flow field. In the FDDO analysis, by employing the discrete-ordinate method, the Boltzmann equation simplified by a model collision integral is transformed to a set of partial differential equations which are continuous in physical space but are point functions in molecular velocity space. The set of partial differential equations are solved by means of a finite-difference approximation. In the DSMC analysis, three kinds of collision sampling techniques, the time counter (TC) method, the null collision (NC) method, and the no time counter (NTC) method, are used.

FDDO and DSMC analyses of rarefied gas flow through 2D nozzles

Two different approaches, the finite-difference method coupled with the discrete-ordinate method (FDDO), and the direct-simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, are used in the analysis of the flow of a rarefied gas expanding through a two-dimensional nozzle and into a surrounding low-density environment. In the DSMC analysis, the variable hard sphere model is used as a molecular model and the no time counter method is employed as a collision sampling technique. The results of both the FDDO and the DSMC methods show good agreement. The FDDO method requires less computational effort than the DSMC method by factors of 10 to 40 in CPU time, depending on the degree of rarefaction.

Implementation of Windowed Multipole into MCNP6.3

This work details the implementation of the Windowed MultiPole(WMP) method of generating cross sections into the monte carlo code MCNP6.3, the verification and validation performed, and potential future improvements to be implemented. Further, this work contextualizes WMP within the broader changes to how nuclear data is stored, iterated upon, and used that have been developing over the past decade.

The binding of atomic hydrogen on graphene from density functional theory and diffusion Monte Carlo calculations

In this research, density functional theory (DFT) and diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) methods are used to calculate the binding energy of a H atom chemisorbed on the graphene surface. The DMC value of the binding energy is about 16% smaller in magnitude than the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) result. The inclusion of exact exchange through the use of the Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof functional brings the DFT value of the binding energy closer in line with the DMC result. It is also found that there are significant differences in the charge distributions determined using PBE and DMC approaches.

An improved stochastic weighted particle method for boundary driven flows

Here, the stochastic weighted particle method (SWPM) is a generalization of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method where particle weights are variable and dynamic. SWPM is backed by a strong theoretical foundation but has not been critically evaluated for problems of practical interest. A thorough assessment of SWPM for boundary-driven flows reveals significant numerical artifacts near the boundary, notably a diverging heat flux. To correct the boundary heat flux, two modifications to SWPM are proposed: separated grouping and a spatially-dependent weight transfer function. To gauge the relative efficiency of SWPM in comparison to DSMC, a high-Mach-number wheel flow which forms a strong density gradient is also simulated.

Direct Monte Carlo Simulations of Chemical Equilibrium Composition of Molecular Fluid Mixtures Under Shock Conditions

A new Monte Carlo simulation method is implemented which holds the number and kind of atoms constant rather than the number and kind of molecules for a molecular fluid mixture. Chemical reactions are allowed as a correlated move of atoms such as an interchange of atoms between molecules. Equilibrium chemical composition is determined as an average over the simulation along with equation of state quantities. Results are presented for N 2 + O 2 → 2NO at 30GPa and 3000K. The equilibrium composition is shown to be sensitive to the potentials between unlike species.

Materializing Inter-Channel Relationships With Multi-Density Woodcock Tracking

Volume rendering techniques for scientific visualization have recently shifted toward Monte Carlo (MC) methods for their flexibility and robustness, but their use in multi-channel visualization remains underexplored. Traditional multi-channel volume rendering often relies on arbitrary, non-physically based color blending functions that hinder interpretation. Here, we introduce multi-density Woodcock tracking, a simple extension of Woodcock tracking that leverages an MC method to produce high-fidelity, physically grounded multi-channel renderings without arbitrary blending. By generalizing Woodcock’s distance tracking, we provide a unified blending modality that also integrates blending functions from prior works. We further implement effects that enhance boundary and feature recognition. By accumulating frames in real-time, our approach delivers high-quality visualizations with perceptual benefits, demonstrated on diverse datasets.

Ettringite hysteresis under sorption from molecular simulations

Highlights: • Hybrid Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are performed. • Anisotropic large strain coefficient of crystal shrinkage of ettringite is provided. • Entropy increases when ettringite converts into metaettringite. • Sorption-induced stress may lead to columns collapse upon drying. • H-bonds involving OH groups in columns play a role in hysteresis. The response of ettringite under sorption is critical for the utilization of this mineral as an energy storage material and to understand the concrete durability problems associated with ettringite formation. We report molecular simulations directly sampling the osmotic ensemble to understand the sorption processes and structural changes in ettringite-metaettringite transition. Desorption branch and sorption-induced volume changes from simulations agree with the experiments. The structural changes at low relative humidity are analyzed, revealing for the first time details of metaettringite structure. The reversibility under sorption observed experimentally is captured by simulation in the ettringite domain. The reversibility in the conversion of metaettringite into ettringite is not captured by the direct simulations in the osmotic ensemble due to the large volume changes associated with ettringite desorption. Finally, we discuss the role of hydrogen bonds on the hysteresis in ettringite.

Electronic structure, magnetic properties, spin orientation, and doping effect in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The layered material Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 , with alternating stacking honeycomb and triangular layers, is attracting considerable attention due to its rich physical properties. Here, in this study, using density functional theory and classical Monte Carlo (MC) methods, we systematically study this system with the 3d 5 electronic configuration. Near the Fermi level, the states are mainly contributed by Te 5p orbitals hybridized with Mn 3d orbitals, resembling a charge-transfer system. Furthermore, the spin orientations of the ferrimagnetic (FiM) ground state display different conductive behaviors when along the ab plane or out-of-plane directions: insulating vs metallic states. The energy difference between the FiM [110] insulating and FiM [001] metallic phases is very small (~0.71 meV/Mn) . Changing the angle θ of spin orientation from in-plane to out-of-plane directions, the band gaps of this system are gradually reduced, leading to an insulator-metal transition, resulting in an enhanced electrical conductivity, related to the colossal angular magnetoresistance (MR) effect. Although the three main magnetic couplings were found to be antiferromagnetic, overall the ground state is FiM. In addition, we also constructed the magnetic phase diagram using the classical XY spin model studied with the MC method. Three magnetic phases were obtained, including antiferromagnetic order, noncollinear spin patterns, and FiM order. Moreover, we also investigated the Se and Ge doping into the Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 system: the FiM state has the lowest energy among the magnetic candidates for both Se- and Ge-doped cases. The magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) decreases in the Se-doped case because the Mn orbital moment is reduced as the doping x increases. Due to the small spin-orbit-coupling effect of Se, the insulator-metal transition caused by the spin orientation disappears in the Se-doped case, resulting in an insulating phase in the FiM [001] phase. This causes a reduced colossal angular MR. However, both the MAE and the band gap of the Ge-doped case do not change much with increasing doping x . Our results for Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 could provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this system or related materials.

Bayesian optimization of PYTHIA 8 tunes

A new tune (set of model parameters) is found for the six most important parameters of the PYTHIA 8 final state parton shower and hadronization model using Bayesian optimization. The tune fits the Large Electron-Positron collider (LEPI) data from ALEPH better than the default tune in PYTHIA 8. To the best of our knowledge, we present the most comprehensive application of Bayesian optimization to the tuning of a parton shower and hadronization model using the LEPI data.

Ray methods in random media

We review ray-optical methods of analyzing short-wavelength propagation in random media. The advantages and limitations of ray methods are discussed, and results of the statistical theory of ray segment fluctuations pertinent to ray tracing are summarized. The standard method of Monte Carlo ray tracing is compared to a new method which takes into account recent results on the statistics of ray segment fluctuations.
