Time-of-flight modulated intensity small-angle neutron scattering measurement of the self-diffusion constant of water

We report that the modulated intensity by zero effort small-angle neutron scattering (MI-SANS) technique is used to measure scattering with a high energy resolution on samples normally ill-suited for neutron resonance spin echo. The self-diffusion constant of water is measured over a q–t range of 0.01–0.2 Å -1 and 70–500 ps. In addition to demonstrating the methodology of using time-of-flight MI-SANS instruments to observe diffusion in liquids, the results support previous measurements on water performed with different methods. This polarized neutron technique simultaneously measures the intermediate scattering function for a wide range of time and length scales. Two radio frequency flippers were used in a spin-echo setup with a 100 kHz frequency difference in order to create a high-resolution time measurement. The results are compared with self-diffusion measurements made by other techniques and the general applicability of MI-SANS at a pulsed source is assessed.

A Simple Space Vector Modulation of High-Frequency AC Linked Three-Phase-to-Single-Phase/DC Converter

High frequency (HF) ac linked converter functions well to interface between buses with different voltage types. Using a three-phase-to-single-phase matrix converter, a single-phase cyclo converter, and a HF transformer, we can compose a HF ac linked converter to interface between three-phase ac grids and single-phase ac or dc distributed generations (DGs). In this paper, a novel space vector modulation (SVM) method is proposed for such kind of converter. The proposed SVM method converts the mains three-phase ac voltage to a HF ac voltage at the primary side of transformer, and then unfolds the HF ac voltage to a single-phase ac or dc voltage at the secondary side of transformer. Without need to compute separate switching signals for the primary and secondary converters and then coordinate their operations elaborately, the proposed SVM method can be easily implemented by incorporating the HF chopping into the SVM of traditional indirect matrix converter. Therefore, no complicated duty cycle computation or elaborate switching states combination is required. Simulation and hardware-in-loop implementation demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

A Decoupled Droop Control Strategy for Cascaded Multicell Inverter with Low-Frequency Modulation

Cascaded multicell inverter (CMI), featured by its merits of modularity and fault-tolerance, is suitable for medium-voltage applications without using bulky step-up transformers. However, little research has reported grid-forming control of the CMI for the application in the power grid with high penetrations of inverter-interfaced generation. To bridge this research gap, this paper proposes a novel droop control strategy for the CMI with a low-frequency modulation to offer inertia and reactive power support to the power grid. A decoupled Q/V droop control strategy is proposed to eliminate the coupling effect from the P/ω control loop caused by the phase-angle difference between the voltages of the CMI and the grid. The output of the Q/V control loop is set as the reference voltage for each cell of the CMI, which makes the CMI naturally a voltage source to provide a grid-forming capability. Finally, the proposed control strategy shows great active and reactive power regulation and sharing capability, which is validated by simulation on two 100 kW, 2.4 kV CMIs connected in parallel to a power grid.

Secure Firmware Update and Device Authentication for Smart Inverters using Blockchain and Physically Uncloable Function (PUF)-Embedded Security Module

Cybersecurity of inverters has been significantly important as inverters become smarter in cyber-physical environments. However, firmware security of smart inverters against firmware attacks from various attack vectors has been less studied. Furthermore, this paper proposes a secure firmware update and device authentication method using a blockchain-based public key infrastructure (PKI) management system and a physically unclonable function (PUF)-embedded security module in a smart inverter. The proposed method is validated by experiments.

A Digital Three Level Space Vector Modulator for High Frequency Vector Sequence Generation

This letter proposes a digital high-speed three-level space vector pulse width modulator (3L-SVPWM). A conventional 3L-SVPWM is typically computation-based, involving a sequential execution of sub-tasks on a digital signal processor (DSP) based controller. The resulting high computation time of 5.4 μs limits the implementation of additional control blocks for switching frequencies greater than 100 kHz. This is overcome by transforming sub-tasks into digital blocks with 1-0 decisions and simpler arithmetic operations. The sub-task blocks are executed concurrently on a programmable logic device (PLD). Hence, a fast 3L-SVPWM execution in 140 ns is achieved. The proposed digital 3L-SVPWM enables high switching frequency operation of wide bandgap (WBG) device-based 3 L inverters to generate high fundamental frequency waveforms. A finite state machine is an integral part of the proposed implementation with the ability to generate any vector sequence, maximizing the usage of redundant vector states in 3L-SVPWM. Here, the proposed digital 3L-SVPWM operation is demonstrated with a GaN-based 3 L active neutral point clamped (3L-ANPC) inverter. Experimental results are presented at 250 kHz switching frequency to generate vector sequences for center-aligned SVPWM (CA-SVPWM) and common mode voltage reduced SVPWM (CMVR-SVPWM). The results also showcase a high fundamental frequency generation capability of 10 kHz.

Thermal Conductivity Measurement of Extrusion-Printed Silver Using Modulated Photothermal Radiometry

Flexible printed electronics is a rapidly growing field with applications in conformal and flexible devices. However, the physical properties of the films created by many state-of-the-art printing methods become highly dependent on printing parameters, resulting in varying thermal properties often differing significantly from their bulk ink components. To understand the influence of the printing process, we build upon our previous work, where a noncontact optical technique, known as modulated photothermal radiometry (MPTR), was used to measure the thermal conductivity of aerosol-jet-printed thin films. In this work, we use the method to study the thermal properties of extrusion-printed silver on glass and alumina substrates. A noise-resistant data analysis fitting technique is applied using a 2-D heat transfer model. Here, the thermal conductivity measurement is validated using the Weidemann-Franz (WF) relationship from measured electrical conductivity values.

Buried-Electrode Hybrid Bonded Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Electro-Optic Mach-Zehnder Modulators

Hybrid bonded silicon nitride thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) at 1310 nm were designed with metal coplanar waveguide electrodes buried in the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chip. Here, the MZM devices showed greatly improved performance compared to earlier devices of a similar design, and similar performance to comparable MZM devices with gold electrodes made on top of the TFLN layer. Both devices achieve a 3-dB electro-optic bandwidth greater than 110 GHz and voltage-driven optical extinction ratios greater than 28 dB. Half-wave voltage-length products (VπL) of 2.8 and 2.5 V∙ cm were measured for the 0.5 and 0.4 cm long buried metal and top gold electrode MZMs, respectively.

Power Decoupling Method for Voltage Source Inverters Using Grid Voltage Modulated Direct Power Control in Unbalanced System

The grid voltage modulated direct power control (GVM-DPC) is a novel power regulation method for grid-connected voltage source inverters (VSI). However, interactions between real and reactive powers still exist in GVM-DPC under unbalanced grid voltage condition, which may deteriorate its transient performance. Here, this article proposes a power decoupling method for GVM-DPC-based VSI in unbalanced systems based on the dynamic feedforward power compensation strategy, which can reduce the coupling magnitudes of real and reactive powers in the transient stages. First, the power coupling mechanism of positive and negative sequence real and reactive powers of VSI under the unbalanced voltage condition is analyzed. Then, the power coupling magnitudes (PCM) are derived according to relationships among the positive sequence components of real power, reactive power and point of common coupling (PCC) voltages. Next, the PCM are compensated into the GVM-DPC for the better decoupling performance. Furthermore, a stability analysis of the proposed control system is studied based on the impedance model, and a comparison with the traditional power decoupling method based on virtual impedance is conducted to show the superiority of the proposed method. Finally, simulations, hardware-in-loop test and experiment are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Automotive Silicon Carbide Power Module Cooling With A Novel Modular Manifold And Embedded Heat Sink

The next generation of integrated power electronics packages will implement wide-bandgap devices with ultrahigh device heat fluxes. Although jet impingement has received attention for power electronics thermal management, it is not used in commercial electric vehicles (EVs) because of the associated pressure drop and reliability concerns. Here, in this paper, we present a modular thermal management system designed for automotive power electronics. The system achieves superior thermal performance to benchmarked EVs, while adhering to reliability standards and with low pumping power. The system utilizes a low-cost and lightweight plastic manifold to generate jets over an optimized heat sink, which is embedded in the direct-bonded-copper (DBC) substrate. The embedded heat sink concept leverages additive manufacturing to add elliptical pin fins to the DBC substrate. The heat sink geometry is optimized for submerged jet impingement using a unit-cell model and an exhaustive search algorithm. The model predictions are validated using unit-cell experiments. A full-scale power module model is then used to compare the DBC-embedded heat sink against direct DBC cooling and baseplate-integrated heat sinks for single-sided (SS) and double-sided (DS) cooling concepts. Using the SS and DS DBC-embedded cooling concepts, the models predict a thermal resistance that represents a reduction of 75% and 85% compared to the 2015 BMW i3, respectively, for the same water-ethylene glycol inverter flow rate. We have shown that an inverter with a 100-kilo-Watt-per-liter power density is achievable with the proposed design.

High-throughput homogenization of a quasi-Gaussian ultrafast laser beam using a combined refractive beam shaper and spatial light modulator

Efficiently shaping femtosecond, transverse Gaussian laser beams to flat-top beams with flat wavefronts is critical for large-scale material processing and manufacturing. Existing beam shaping devices fall short either in final beam homogeneity or efficiency. Here, we present an approach that uses refractive optics to perform the majority of the beam shaping and then uses a fine-tune device (spatial light modulator) to refine the intensity profile. For the beam that we selected, circularly asymmetric with intensity fluctuations, our method achieved a uniformity of 0.055 within 90% of the beam area at 92% efficiency. The optimization involved an iterative beam shaping process that converged to optimum within 10 iterations.

Review of the General-Purpose Heat Source Module Reduction and Monitoring Processing at INL

A thorough review of the Module Reduction and Monitoring (MRM) process was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of processing. The degree of reduction was calculated using the mass balance of oxygen contained in carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removed from all fuel processed between January 2014 through August 2019. The plutonia was slightly reduced from O/Pu ratio of 2.0 to a range of 1.991 to 1.999. The review evaluated publications generated when MRM processing was developed and performed at the Mound Laboratory. A similar degree of reduction was measured at Mound in the 1982 paper authored by Ernie Johnson as well as MRM processing of IHS-60 and some Cassini-era fuel. The original 1982 paper documenting the reduction process reported a mass balance reduction to 1.9931 yet reported a total reduction to ~1.98 (Johnson 1990). The IHS-60 and Cassini reductions were calculated at 1.995 and 1.997 using the number of moles of CO and CO 2 removed as published in a clad pressurization investigation report (Merten, et all 1995). MRM process changes are recommended to improve the accuracy of the CO partial pressure calcualtion.
