This course applies to persons performing work under P-330-6, Nonconformance Control and Reporting(NCR), who will be assigned the NCR Coordinator role. Upon completion of the course, employees will have a clear understanding of the unique role and responsibilities of an NCR Coordinator during the Initiation, Investigation and Closure Processes.
This provides a compilation of Bretscher’s Group F-3 monthly progress reports in 1945. They are of historical importance because they cover the period when Los Alamos measured the DT cross section and discovered the large resonance enhancement, at DT energies relevant to thermonuclear application. See the July 1945 report in particular. Prior to this, the DT cross section was first measured at Purdue in 1943, but at much higher energies that are less relevant for applications. Numerical values are not given here – they can be found in the 1946 report LA-582 and Phys. Rev. 75, 1154 (1949).
Beginning in 2018, Elsevier through its Scopus database introduced topics to further refine its classification of publications: Previous classification schemes used concepts such as subject areas, e.g., physics and astronomy, chemistry, computer science, etc.; Topics, in contrast, are much more granular. There are over 96,000 and their titles/contents are very specific, e.g., “Multilayers; Interfaces (materials); Individual layer." Elsevier topic clusters or Clarivate citation topics represent good approaches to examining an institution’s scientific productivity areas. These approaches have the granularity that is not present in the previous categorization approaches used by these databases. The Elsevier topic clusters for the DOE Laboratories do not appear to vary that much over the 1996 – 2021 period. In some cases (ANL, LBNL, LANL, ORNL, and PNNL), there were over 1000 topic clusters at these Laboratories, but a consistent set formed the core of the publication activity. Diversity is viewed as a desirable property of a research portfolio. Examining the balance component of the DOE laboratories, the spread is uneven or not diverse. This may be due to the missions of these laboratories. The balance of a single university was unequal too.
This presentation covers a few key topics in relation to advancing the theory of nuclear data evaluations. First it targets and highlights the NCSP mission and vision along with the five-year plan. This lecture focuses upon the uncertainty quantification and SAMMY modernization. This presentation covers theory, and a framework is provided. The presentation concludes with goals, outlooks, and accomplishments.
This presentation was created to highlight several pertinent topics and reports to introduce into the forum. This presentation covers membership along with the recent SC-8 & NCSCC ballots. Topics discussed include the ISO TC85/SC5/WG8 standards activity with a report from D. Bowen. Additionally, a NCSCC activity report by L. Wetzel was received. Along with reports from working group chairs. Finally, any Old/New Business was introduced.
This presentation is on the Oak Ridge National Labatory (ORNL) S/U capabilities for critical experiment design. It covers a brief intro to TSUNAMI analysis for NCS validation. Additionally, it shows similarity indices and historical use of TSUNAMI for critical experiment design. It concludes with recent designs: IER-441, IER-304, and IER-554 (on-going).
This presentation is on improvements of SCALE infrastructure on Microsoft Windows. This presentation begins with an overview and history of the group and history of SCALE infrastructure and testing as well. Improvements made to testing and the introduction of the cloud is brought up. Other topics include: GitLab Testing Suite and Windows Toolchain. Benefits to testing, to developers, and to users are discussed.
This presentation is titled American Nuclear Society 2023 Student Conference and is led by with introductions from a few of the students. This presentation touches on how operations serve the mission, and everyone is a part of it. In order for anyone to operate with special nuclear material (SNM) the responsible contractor or licensee must comply with several regulations. The presentation touches on how there are several roles involved in operations. This talk also includes a page of references, regulations, standards and guidance. The presentation concludes with a section on Material Balance Areas (MBA).
This presentation provides a look into VADER in a nutshell. Topics include going over validation. Additionally, development with a particular look into methodologies is provided. A quick glimpse is given of VADER input, alongside examples of input and output. The presentation concludes with a list of long term and near-term VADER future plans.
This presentation opens with a ORNL definition of ENDF/B-VIII.1β1. Following with keff results for CE calculations with VALID. Additionally provided are Preliminary Root Cause Analysis (RCA) results. This presentation then concludes with future plans for additional validation.
This presentation on Nuclear Criticality Safety Training: Needs and Efforts covers several points. This presentation starts with a quick overview of Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Training. Then it lists current and ongoing training with a focus on the training in progress. This presentation then concludes with a look at supporting efforts.
Final Technical report for nuclear powered DAC.
A proposal is a written response to an opportunity offered by a funding organization. Proposals must meet a SOLICITOR’S needs, not YOUR needs. A solicited proposal is a written response to a specific solicitation issued by a sponsor. These solicitations are typically called RFPs, or Requests for Proposals. RFPs are specific in their requirements regarding format and technical content. Scientists at Los Alamos often deal with this type of proposal — Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) proposals are one example. An unsolicited proposal is one submitted to a sponsor who has not issued a specific solicitation. It usually comes about during interactions at meetings or conferences. In some instances, a sponsor may be visiting for another reason when the possibility for an unsolicited proposal becomes available. A pre-proposal is one in which a sponsor wishes to gage competition before having participants prepare a formal, full-length proposal. These types of scenarios imply that the actual proposal could be highly competitive and will usually be by invitation only.
This presentation outlines the history of Los Alamos National Laboratory from its conception in 1943 through to the present day.
Terminal Objective: Given the need to perform duties as an RCT, recognize the requirements for access controls and work setup in radiological areas in accordance with RP-PROG-TP-200, Radiation Protection Manual and P-121, Radiation Protection .
Objectives: By the end of this offering, participants will be able to: Identify what does and does not define culture; Specify the main drivers of why we need a Nuclear Safety Culture; Detail the primary contributors to LANL's Nuclear Safety Culture history; Explain how LANL's values, behaviors, and actions demonstrate our commitment to a Nuclear Safety Culture; Indicate at least one new piece of knowledge as a result of this course.
The U.S. DOE’s National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) hosts an open-source website and associated GitHub repository called the Virtual Test Bed (VTB) on which computational models for advanced reactors are documented and shared with the reactor community. In FY23 under the NRIC program, computational models for nuclear reactor analysis were developed and contributed to the VTB Github repository during FY23 by contributors at Argonne National Laboratory. Other models developed outside of NRIC were also ported to the VTB as part of this work, serving a broader mission to make computational reactor analysis models more widely available to the reactor community. The model development activities focused on demonstration of gas-cooled microreactor models including computational fluid dynamics simulations of flow through an industry-inspired air jacket design, and simulation of multiphysics transients for a gas-cooled microreactor assembly. Additionally, development of a molten salt reactor (led at Idaho National Laboratory) was supported through Argonne’s expertise in multigroup cross sections generation. Models for these two reactor types were targeted due to their relevancy to NRIC’s Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) and Laboratory for Operation and Testing in the U.S. (LOTUS) physical test beds, which are slated to host microreactor and molten salt reactor experiments. The model porting activities consisted of developing detailed documentation for several physics models which originate from the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program. We include only contributions from Argonne National Laboratory in this report.
