Search for 𝛾⁢𝐻 production and constraints on the Yukawa couplings of light quarks to the Higgs boson

A search for 𝛾⁢𝐻 production is performed with data from the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 at a proton-proton center-of-mass collision energy of 13 TeV. The analysis focuses on the topology of a boosted Higgs boson recoiling against a high-energy photon. The final states of 𝐻 → $b\bar{b}$ and 𝐻 → 4⁢ℓ are analyzed. This study examines effective 𝐻⁡𝑍⁢𝛾 and 𝐻⁡𝛾⁢𝛾 anomalous couplings within the context of an effective field theory. In this approach, the production cross section is constrained to be 𝜎 𝛾⁢𝐻 < 16.4 fb at 95% confidence level (CL). Simultaneous constraints on four anomalous couplings involving 𝐻⁡𝑍⁢𝛾 and 𝐻⁡𝛾⁢𝛾 are provided. Additionally, the production rate for 𝐻 → 4⁢ℓ is examined to assess potential enhancements in the Yukawa couplings between light quarks and the Higgs boson. Assuming the standard model values for the Yukawa couplings of the bottom and top quarks, the following simultaneous constraints are obtained: 𝜅 𝑢 =(0.0 ± 1.5) ×10 3 , 𝜅 𝑑 = (0.0$^{+6.7}_{−6.8}$) × 10 2 , 𝜅 𝑠 = 0$^{+30}_{−32}$, and 𝜅 𝑐 =0.0$^{+2.3}_{−2.8}$. This rules out the hypothesis that up- or down-type quarks in the first or second generation have the same Yukawa couplings as those in the third generation, with a CL greater than 95%.

Measurements of ϒ states production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 500 GeV with STAR: Cross sections, ratios, and multiplicity dependence

We report measurements of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆), ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) and ϒ⁡(3⁢𝑆) production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =500 GeV by the STAR experiment in year 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity ℒ int = 13 pb −1 . The results provide precise cross sections, transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) and rapidity (𝑦) spectra, as well as cross section ratios for 𝑝 T < 10 GeV/c and |𝑦| < 1. The dependence of the ϒ yield on charged particle multiplicity has also been measured, offering new insights into the mechanisms of quarkonium production. The data are compared to various theoretical models: the color evaporation model (CEM) accurately describes the ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) production, while the color glass condensate+nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (CGC+NRQCD) model overestimates the data, particularly at low 𝑝 T . Conversely, the color singlet model (CSM) underestimates the rapidity dependence. These discrepancies highlight the need for further development in understanding the production dynamics of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The trend in the multiplicity dependence is consistent with CGC/saturation and string percolation models or ϒ production happening in multiple parton interactions modeled by PYTHIA 8.

Measurement of B$_\mathrm{c}$(2S)$^+$ and B$_\mathrm{c}^*$(2S)$^+$ cross section ratios in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

The ratios of the Bc(2S)+ to Bc+, Bc*(2S)+ to Bc+, and Bc*(2S)+ to Bc(2S)+ production cross sections are measured in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 143 fb-1. The three measurements are made in the Bc+ meson phase space region defined by the transverse momentum pT>15 GeV and absolute rapidity |y|<2.4, with the excited Bc(*)(2S)+ states reconstructed through the Bc(*)+π+π−, followed by the Bc+→J/ψπ+ and J/ψ→μ+μ− decays. The Bc(2S)+ to Bc+, Bc*(2S)+ to Bc+, and Bc*(2S)+ to Bc(2S)+ cross section ratios, including the unknown Bc(*)(2S)+→Bc(*)+π+π− branching fractions, are (3.47±0.63(stat)±0.33(syst))%, (4.69±0.71(stat)±0.56(syst))%, and 1.35±0.32(stat)±0.09(syst), respectively. None of these ratios shows a significant dependence on the pT or |y| of the Bc+ meson. The normalized dipion invariant mass distributions from the decays Bc(*)(2S)+→Bc(*)+π+π− are also reported.

Search for the lepton-flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson and additional Higgs bosons in the e μ final state in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for the lepton-flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson and potential additional Higgs bosons with a mass in the range 110-160 GeV to an e$^{\pm}\mu^{\mp}$ pair is presented. The search is performed with a proton-proton collision data set at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. No excess is observed for the Higgs boson. The observed (expected) upper limit on the e$^{\pm}\mu^{\mp}$ branching fraction for it is determined to be 4.4 (4.7) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ at 95% confidence level, the most stringent limit set thus far from direct searches. The largest excess of events over the expected background in the full mass range of the search is observed at an e$^{\pm}\mu^{\mp}$ invariant mass of approximately 146 GeV with a local (global) significance of 3.8 (2.8) standard deviations.

Observation of the J / ψ → μ + μ − μ + μ − decay in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

The J / ψ → μ + μ − μ + μ − decay has been observed with a statistical significance in excess of five standard deviations. The analysis is based on an event sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 33.6 fb − 1 . Normalizing to the J / ψ → μ + μ − decay mode leads to a branching fraction of [ 10.1 − 2.7 + 3.3 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 7 , a value that is consistent with the standard model prediction. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Search for an Invisible Z ' in a Final State with Two Muons and Missing Energy at Belle II

The $L_μ – L_τ$ extension of the standard model predicts the existence of a lepton-flavor-universality-violating Z' boson that couples only to the heavier lepton families. We search for such a Z' through its invisible decay in the process $e^+e^– → μ^+μ^–$Z'. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions at a center- of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019-2020, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79.7 fb –1 . We find no excess over the expected standard-model background. We set 90%-confidence-level upper limits on the cross section for this process as well as on the coupling of the model, which ranges from 3 × 10 –3 at low Z' masses to 1 at Z' masses of 8 GeV=$c^2$.

Search for Higgs Boson and Observation of $Z$ Boson through Their Decay into a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Boosted Topologies in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson ($H$) produced with transverse momentum ($p_T$) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to a charm quark-antiquark ($c\bar{c}$) pair is presented. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Boosted $H \to c\overline{c}$ decay products are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet and identified using a deep neural network charm tagging technique. The method is validated by measuring the $Z \to c\bar{c}$ decay process, which is observed in association with jets at high $p_T$ for the first time with a signal strength of $1.00^{+0.17}_{-0.14}$ (syst)$\pm 0.08$ (theo) $\pm 0.06$ (stat), defined as the ratio of the observed process rate to the SM expectation. The observed (expected) upper limit on $\sigma (H){\cal B}(H \to c\overline{c})$ is set at 47 (39) times the SM prediction at 95\%confidence level.

Measurement of the dependence of the hadron production fraction ratio $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$ and $f_\mathrm{d} / f_ \mathrm{u}$ on B meson kinematic variables in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The dependence of the ratio between the B$_\mathrm{s}^0$ and B$^+$ hadron production fractions, $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$, on the transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B$_\mathrm{s}^0$$\to$ J$/\psi\,\phi$ and B$^+$$\to$ J$/\psi$ K$^+$. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6 fb$^{-1}$. The $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$ ratio is observed to depend on the B $p_\mathrm{T}$ and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large $p_\mathrm{T}$. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B$^0$ to B$^+$ hadron production fractions, $f_\mathrm{d} / f_\mathrm{u}$, measured using the B$^0$$\to$ J$/\psi$ K$^{*0}$ decay channel, is found to be consistent with unity and independent of $p_\mathrm{T}$ and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

Intelliquench: An Adaptive Machine Learning System for Detection of Superconducting Magnet Quenches

In superconducting magnets, the irreversible transition of a portion of the conductor to resistive state is called a “quench.” Having large stored energy, magnets can be damaged by quenches due to localized heating, high voltage, or large force transients. Unfortunately, current quench protection systems can only detect a quench after it happens, and mitigating risks in Low Temperature Superconducting (LTS) accelerator magnets often requires fast response (down to ms). Additionally, protection of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnets is still suffering from prohibitively slow quench detection. In this study, we lay the groundwork for a quench prediction system using an auto-encoder fully-connected deep neural network. After dynamically trained with data features extracted from acoustic sensors around the magnet, the system detects anomalous events seconds before the quench in most of our data. While the exact nature of the events is under investigation, we show that the system can “forecast” a quench before it happens under magnet training conditions through a randomized experiment. This opens up the way of integrated data processing, potentially leading to faster and better diagnostics and detection of magnet quenches

Measurement of the Higgs boson production rate in association with top quarks in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

The rate for Higgs (${\mathrm{H}} $) bosons production in association with either one (${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $) or two (${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of $13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $ by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$. The analysis is aimed at events that contain ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $, ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\tau } {\tau } $, or ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $, ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $, and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $ and ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $ signals correspond to $0.92 \pm 0.19\,\text {(stat)} ^{+0.17}_{-0.13}\,\text {(syst)} $ and $5.7 \pm 2.7\,\text {(stat)} \pm 3.0\,\text {(syst)} $ of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $, and to 1.4 (0.3) for ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $ production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling $y_{{\mathrm{t}}}$ of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, $\kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}=y_{{\mathrm{t}}}/y_{{\mathrm{t}}}^{\mathrm {SM}}$, is constrained to be within $-0.9< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< -0.7$ or $0.7< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< 1.1$, at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $ production rate to date.

Azimuthal correlations in Z +jets events in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $

The production of Z bosons associated with jets is measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV}$ with data recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb -1 . The multiplicity of jets with transverse momentum $p$ T > 30 GeV is measured for different regions of the Z boson’s $p$ T (Z ), from lower than 10 GeV to higher than 100 GeV. The azimuthal correlation $Δ\phi$ between the Z boson and the leading jet, as well as the correlations between the two leading jets are measured in three regions of $p$ T (Z ). The measurements are compared with several predictions at leading and next-to-leading orders, interfaced with parton showers. Predictions based on transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and corresponding parton showers give a good description of the measurement in the regions where multiple parton interactions and higher jet multiplicities are not important. The effects of multiple parton interactions are shown to be important to correctly describe the measured spectra in the low $p$ T (Z ) regions.

Reinforcement learning applied to dilute combustion control for increased fuel efficiency

To reduce the modeling burden for control of spark-ignition engines, reinforcement learning (RL) has been applied to solve the dilute combustion limit problem. Q-learning was used to identify an optimal control policy to adjust the fuel injection quantity in each combustion cycle. A physics-based model was used to determine the relevant states of the system used for training the control policy in a data-efficient manner. The cost function was chosen such that high cycle-to-cycle variability (CCV) at the dilute limit was minimized while maintaining stoichiometric combustion as much as possible. Experimental results demonstrated a reduction of CCV after the training period with slightly lean combustion, contributing to a net increase in fuel conversion efficiency of 1.33%. To ensure stoichiometric combustion for three-way catalyst compatibility, a second feedback loop based on an exhaust oxygen sensor was incorporated into the fuel quantity controller using a slow proportional-integral (PI) controller. The closed-loop experiments showed that both feedback loops can cooperate effectively, maintaining stoichiometric combustion while reducing combustion CCV and increasing fuel conversion efficiency by 1.09%. Finally, a modified cost function was proposed to ensure stoichiometric combustion with a single controller. In addition, the learning period was shortened by half to evaluate the RL algorithm performance on limited training time. Experimental results showed that the modified cost function could achieve the desired CCV targets, however, the learning time was reduced by half and the fuel conversion efficiency increased only by 0.30%.

Proton beam dynamics in bare IOTA with intense space-charge

We are commissioning a 2.5-MeV proton beam for the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator at Fermilab, allowing experiments in the strong space-charge regime with incoherent betatron tune shifts nearing 0.5. Accurate modelling of space-charge dynamics is vital for understanding planned experiments. We compare anticipated emittance growth and beam loss in the bare IOTA configuration using transverse space-charge models in Xsuite, PyORBIT, and MADX simulation codes. Our findings reveal agreement within a factor of 2 in core phase-space density predictions up to 100 synchrotron periods at moderate beam currents, while tail distributions and beam loss show significant differences.

South Africa: Framework for Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management

In July 2022, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced an emergency response plan to address the growing electricity crisis in South Africa, which included the necessity for customers of Eskom, South Africa’s primary electricity supplier, to implement demand-side energy efficiency measures. This report is the second of two reports that provides the foundation for a strategic Demand-Side Management (DSM) approach to reduce load shedding and maximize energy savings in South Africa, though inter-governmental collaboration and increased coordination of energy efficiency activities. The first report focuses on the experience of Eskom’s rate-funded Integrated Demand Management (IDM) programme, from its beginning in 2004 to today, highlighting the factors that led to failed support for the programme. This second report focuses on addressing the challenges identified in the first report and describes the elements of a policy framework to develop a sustained DSM program to meet the government’s energy efficiency goals in terms of greenhouse gas emissions reduction and social equity and inclusion to achieve a just transition.
