Controlling a power output of a nuclear reaction without control rods

A nuclear power system includes a reactor vessel that includes a reactor core that includes nuclear fuel assemblies configured to generate a nuclear fission reaction. A representative nuclear power system further includes a riser positioned above the reactor core and a primary coolant flow path that extends from a bottom portion of the reactor vessel, through the reactor core, and through an annulus between the riser and the reactor vessel. A primary coolant circulates through the primary coolant flow path to receive heat from the nuclear fission reaction and release the heat to a power generation system configured to generate electric power. The nuclear power system further includes a control rod assembly system positioned in the reactor vessel and configured to position control rods in only two discrete positions.

Morphology Control of Growth by Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy on Faceted GaAs Substrates Produced by Controlled Spalling for Low Cost III-V Devices

In this work, we apply the morphology control of hydride vapor phase epitaxial (HVPE) growth to planarize faceted, non-planar substrates. Controlled spalling is a promising high-throughput substrate reuse technology that could reduce substrate costs for III-V devices; however, the spalling fracture for (100)-oriented GaAs substrates produces a regularly corrugated surface of facets that are 5-20 um in height. We discuss how to planarize these surfaces using only a few minutes of HVPE growth and how to minimize the impact on throughput when integrating faceted wafers into a potential manufacturing process at scale.

Controlling a power output of a nuclear reactor without using control rods

A Distributed Reinforcement Learning Yaw Control Approach for Wind Farm Energy Capture Maximization: Preprint

In this paper, we present a reinforcement-learning based distributed approach to wind farm energy capture maximization using yaw control, also known as wake steering. In order to maximize the power output of a wind farm, it is often necessary for individual turbines to decrease their own power output through yaw misalignment so as to deflect their wakes away from downstream turbines. Although using model-based methods to achieve yaw misalignment is one option, a model-free method might be better suited to incorporate factors that are difficult to model or changing conditions. We propose an algorithm that adapts concepts of temporal difference reinforcement learning distributed to a multi-agent environment that allows individual turbines to act so as to optimize overall wind farm output and react to unforeseen disturbances.

Low-Speed Performance Enhancement using Localized Active Flow Control: Simulations, Scaling and Design of Localized Active Flow Control on the Common Research Model (4/4)

This report is dedicated to the application of localized AFC on the NASA CRM-HL wind tunnel model, with focus on the aileron application discussed in the CFD study (final report document #2). The experience developed for the Reference Aircraft guided the implementation on the CRM model. CFD evaluations are performed on a representative high-lift configuration, for a set of aileron deflections, and at relevant flow conditions. Alternative flow control actuator layouts are proposed and design consideration for practical integration into the existing CRM-HL model are set forth. The CFD simulations indicate that the aerodynamic performance improvements due to AFC obtained for the CRM-HL are consistent with those achieved for the Reference Aircraft. The observed changes in L/D are smaller than for the Reference Aircraft because the CRM has a higher leading edge sweep angle and a different relative aileron size. Conceptual design studies confirmed that the integration of an AFC equipped aileron into the existing wind tunnel model is feasible.

Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop Evaluation of a Microgrid Controller for a Microgrid System with Multiple Grid-Forming Inverters

This paper presents the laboratory evaluation of a commercial Microgrid Management System (MGMS) implemented in the real-world Bronzeville Microgrid which features a futuristic scenario with high renewable energy integration and the use of multiple Grid-Forming (GFM) inverters. The primary objective of the performance evaluation for the MGMS is to assess the MGMS's capability to dispatch GFM units, including a GFM PV unit and two GFM battery units, to maintain the system stability and ensure economic operation, thus guaranteeing the microgrid's resilience during prolonged outages and dynamic events. The laboratory controller hardware-in-the-loop provides realistic testing environment through detailed electromagnetic transient modeling of the microgrid system, hardware MGMS, and standard communication protocols (DNP3). The CHIL evaluation shows how the MGMS effectively manages the GFM inverters, highlighting its performance in maintaining stability, reliability, and survivability in a microgrid environment with a high penetration of renewable energy sources.
