Status of Research Activities on LVDTs: Modeling and Simulation Development and Performance Characterization of Commercial LVDTs

FY-22 research focused on two major areas. The first area was modeling and simulation with linked testing that will advance the Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDT) technology for use by stakeholders requiring LVDTs in upcoming irradiation tests. The second area focused on testing LVDTs purchased from U.S. suppliers that were investigated in FY-21. These cross-cutting development activities will ensure stakeholders have the current state-of-the-art LVDT-based technologies for deployment in future irradiation tests. Two stand-alone reports are included in the appendixes. The purpose of this report is to provide a convenient body of work to access the reports and to evaluate the data and conclusions provided. Appendix A, “Testing of the RDP Translation Transducer,” contains a complete evaluation of an RDP Electrosense linear transducer that has the capability of replicating the form, fit, and function of LVDTs currently being used at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Appendix B is an extract from the report, “Advanced Sensors and Instrumentation Program at Boise State University (BSU), August 2022, Linear Variable Differential Transformers.” This report contains modeling and testing results conducted at BSU and INL.

Comparative Study of Commercial-Scale CO2 Storage Options in Single and Stacked Saline Formations in Managing Reservoir Pressure Buildup

Presentation at American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Carbon, Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) held in Houston, Texas, April 25–27, 2023. The presentation emphasizes the importance of coordination among CO2 storage projects as CCUS deployment needs to be scaled up. The presentation focuses on findings from reservoir simulation studies in which different configurations of injection zones (a single saline formation and a stacked sequence of saline formations) are targeted for CO2 storage to accommodate the amplified storage volume needed while managing reservoir pressure buildup and interference induced by multi-well injection operations.

Cadmium Telluride Solar Cells: From Fundamental Science to Commercial Applications

In order to meet aggressive decarbonization goals, photovoltacs (PV) need to expand substantially. The current technology that heavily dominates the market, silicon (Si), comprises 95% of the world's PV production, is energy intensive to make, and can take up a substantial portion of the remaining carbon budget if expanded. Conversely, cadmium telluride (CdTe) comprises much of the remaining 5% of the global PV market and has a significantly lower carbon footprint than Si, historically costs less to produce, and is critically important to U.S. competitiveness in the global market. Importantly, CdTe still has room to grow, particularly related to efficiency because voltage has historically been much lower than what we calculate it should be. My research is focused in part on understanding this voltage deficit from a fundamental perspective by studying bulk materials and interfaces. One of the most important regions of the device is buried within the stack, so I developed a technique to cleave and reveal buried interfaces. This cleave technique has enabled a much better scientific understanding and allows us to make lightweight, flexible PV while maintaining low costs, high efficiency, and high throughput associated with standard module processing.

GEESS as a Mechanism to Facilitate the Commercialization of Geologic Carbon Sequestration

It is a presentation on the Geoanalytical Economic Evaluation of Saline Storage (GEESS) project. The GEESS project objectives are to characterize in detail geologic saline formations targeted for geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) using publicly available datasets and create high spatial resolution datasets (up to 5 km grid) of geologic parameters. The presentation aims to provide a comprehensive list of references used to characterize each geologic formation evaluated so far.

2022 Product Commercialization and Market Development Awardee: Bergey Windpower

In 2023, consumers will finance more than 80% of the residential solar energy systems they purchase, which they use as collateral (called "non-recourse loans"). Similar loans are not yet offered to fund distributed wind energy systems. To accelerate deployment of small wind systems, which power individual rural homes and farms, the United States will need to make consumer loans available at reasonable rates with modest downpayments and collateral requirements. A team led by Bergey Windpower Co. is creating new consumer financing options to reduce or eliminate the upfront cash needed to buy distributed wind energy systems. This new financing structure would decrease purchase costs for small wind turbines produced by Bergey Windpower and possibly other manufacturers. Product financing is instrumental in growing wind power market share, clean energy manufacturing, and installation jobs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Bergey Windpower's previous Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) awards have led to the development of affordable, high-performance wind turbines, microgrids, and components.

Automated platform to assess commercial off the shelf (COTS) software assurance

A computer-implemented method of verifying software is provided. The method comprises creating a number of virtual machines that simulate computing environments and running a number of software program on the virtual machines. The software programs have full access to the simulated computing environments, but the source code of the software program is unavailable. A hypervisor performs virtual machine introspection as the software programs run on the virtual machines, wherein the virtual machines and software programs are unaware the virtual machine introspection is being performed. Telemetry data is collected about the software programs, including any identified threats posed by the software programs to the simulated computing environments, and presented to a user via an interface.
