Coherency-Constrained Spectral Clustering for Power Network Reduction

This paper presents a methodology for reducing the complexity of large-scale power network models using spectral clustering, aggregation of electrical components, and cost function approximation. Two approaches are explored using unconstrained and constrained spectral clustering to determine areas for effective system reduction. Once the system areas are determined, both loads and generators by type are aggregated, and their new cost function is approximated through polynomial curve-fitting or statistical methods. The performance of reduced networks is evaluated in terms of their ability to follow the true daily cost of the original system over a 24-hour period considering a set of several days. Two test systems are taken as test beds. Application of the methodology to a modified version of the IEEE 39-bus system reduces it from 17 generators to a 4-bus system and 9 generators with about 93% of accuracy. Similarly, the IEEE 118-bus system is reduced from 19 generators to a 3-bus system with three aggregated units achieving over 99% of accuracy. These findings address scalability challenges and enhance accuracy for high and mid-loading level conditions, and by aggregating thermal units with similar cost functions.

Considerations for three-dimensional image reconstruction from experimental data in coherent diffractive imaging

The Datasets folder contains 3 datasets, corresponding to the datasets mentioned in the article with 670, 2691 and 586 images. The Runs folder has all the runs used. Besides the images itself it also contains tags for each image under `/entry_1/image_1/detector_and_photon_corrected/tags`. The `headings` attribute gives the name of each tag. The `Jonas Strict` tag corresponds to the 670 images, the `Redflamingo` tag to the 2691 images and the `Redflamingo_Ida_subset` tag to the 586 images. The final dataset with 260 images can be obtained from `Datasets/amoc6914-Redflamingo-manual-586.h5` and use the `/model/diameterNM` group to select the 260 images with size closest to 214 nm.

Octet: A coherent qubit control system for trapped-ion quantum computers

This is firmware and software designed for a Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC chip made by Xilinx, specifically targeted to laser-based individual addressing of trapped ion qubits via a multi-channel AOM. The design features 8 dual-tone outputs with frequencies up to 409 MHz that can be controlled statically or dynamically via on-chip cubic spline interpolation engines that allow one to generate sequences of output waveforms with fast modulation of frequency, phase, amplitude, and z-rotations that are smooth/discrete and can run simultaneously across all parameters/tones. It also features global phase alignment on all tones regardless of frequency and the ability to return to a known phase/frequency at any later time on a per-tone basis without the need for manual bookkeeping. Acoustic and optical cross-talk can also be destructively canceled by adding neighboring outputs with variable amplitude/phase/delay. Each tone can be optionally frequency locked to an external RF source. 81-beam coherent combination using a programmable array generator

We have generated 81 independently controllable beams using a spatial light modulator and combined them on a diffractive combiner, to characterize the combiner and develop a fast phase error detection scheme. A key parameter of the diffractive combiner is measured in a new way, enabling an efficient combination when programming calibrated phases of each beam. This testbed provides a platform for development of advanced feedback phase control of high channel-count beam combination.

Two-step retrace error calibration removing tilt ambiguity in coherence scanning interferometry

In interferometry measurement, the retrace error often limits its high-precision metrology applications. Retrace error calibration with tilted flats can give a relation between the retrace error and the introduced tilt angles, but there is still an ambiguity between the introduced tilt angles and the tilt terms in the created retrace error. Here, we propose a novel, to the best of our knowledge, two-step calibration method to resolve this tilt ambiguity. It involves additional measurements of spherical mirror(s) with known curvature(s). The experiment shows that the curvature deviation due to the tilt ambiguity can be significantly reduced after applying the proposed method.

Adaptive Machine Learning for Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging (BCDI) of 3D Electron Density Maps with Application to La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 (LBCO) High Temperature Superconductor Studies [PowerPoint]

Understanding mesoscale heterogeneity is important for evaluating fatigue and failure of structural materials and for manufacturing processes. Data-driven tools can facilitate in guiding effort investment (measurements and computations) at various stages of the materials development. Our 3D reconstruction approach is to find a set of coefficients which define a bounding surface of the electron density. Data for training the 3D CNN was generated by sampling coefficients from uniform distributions. Test vs. prediction values are shown for the 28 even-valued coefficients for 1000 test structures, with the best and worst performers highlighted. The adaptive part of this work utilized a model independent extremum seeking (ES). The predictions of the CNN were used as the starting point for the ES algorithm. The convergence of the ES algorithm for 3 different structures is illustrated, and the robustness of the adaptive ML approach was demonstrated on experimentally measured 3D crystal from high energy diffraction microscopy. Reconstruction of a non-uniform density volume with different levels of Poisson noise is also shown. Preliminary attempts at reconstructing measured La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 diffraction patterns have so far failed.

Component and Circuit Performance Measurements for Coherent Radar - A Systems Perspective

A useful performance metric for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) radar systems is the Impulse Response (IPR). This is true for a fidelity metric for the signal channel, as well as a stability measure across multiple pulses. The IPR represents performance with respect to both amplitude and phase modulations of the transfer function for components, circuits, subassemblies, and even the looped radar hardware. The proper IPR performance specification limits will depend on radar operating mode. Generally, it will be the intersection of the strictest requirements.
