Sharp Infrared Eyes The Journey of QWIPs from Concept to Large Inexpensive Sensitive Arrays in Hand-held Infrared Cameras

One of the simplest device realizations of the classic particle-in-a-box problem of basic quantum mechanics is the Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector (QWIP). Optimization of the detector design and material growth and processing has culminated in the realization of a camera with a large (256x256 pixel) focal plane array of QWIPs which can see at 8.5 mu m, holding forth great promise for a variety of applications in the 6-25 mu m wavelength range.

Development of a Thermo-Electric Cooler Simulation Routine for the Wide Field Camera 3 Thermal Model

A SINDA subroutine has been developed to predict the power generated by a Thermo-Electric Cooler (TEC). A TEC can be described analytically by relations between four parameters: cold side temperature, hot side temperature, parasitic heat load, and electrical power. The subroutine requires the user to input the hot side and cold side temperatures, the corresponding parasitic heat load, and coefficients describing the vendor performance curves. The subroutine then utilizes an iterative solution scheme and vendor TEC performance curves for specific hardware to determine the current (and consequently the TEC power) that satisfies these requirements. This paper provides an in-depth discussion of the algorithm employed in the subroutine, implementation of the subroutine in the HST Wide Field Camera 3 thermal model, and the evaluation of the subroutine performance against actual test/correlation data.

Calibration Status and Results for Wide Field Camera 3

Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) is a general-purpose imager in development for installation in HST Servicing Mission 4 (SM4). Covering the wavelength range of 200-1700 nm in two observing channels, WFC3 offers powerful new capabilities, particularly in the near-ultraviolet and near-infrared bands. During 2004, the instrument was integrated and underwent a substantial suite of end-to-end characterization and performance tests. In this paper, we present a brief overview of the design and scientific purpose of WFC3, summarize the results of its test program to date, and highlight some recent developments in detector technology that will further enhance the performance of WFC3 s IR channel.

Encrypting Digital Camera with Automatic Encryption Key Deletion

A digital video camera includes an image sensor capable of producing a frame of video data representing an image viewed by the sensor, an image memory for storing video data such as previously recorded frame data in a video frame location of the image memory, a read circuit for fetching the previously recorded frame data, an encryption circuit having an encryption key input connected to receive the previously recorded frame data from the read circuit as an encryption key, an un-encrypted data input connected to receive the frame of video data from the image sensor and an encrypted data output port, and a write circuit for writing a frame of encrypted video data received from the encrypted data output port of the encryption circuit to the memory and overwriting the video frame location storing the previously recorded frame data.

Lessons Learned from the Wide Field Camera 3 TV1 Test Campaign and Correlation Effort

In January 2004, shortly after the Columbia accident, future servicing missions to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) were cancelled. In response to this, further work on the Wide Field Camera 3 instrument was ceased. Given the maturity level of the design, a characterization thermal test (TV1) was completed in case the mission was re-instated or an alternate mission found on which to fly the instrument. This thermal test yielded some valuable lessons learned with respect to testing configurations and modeling/correlation practices, including: 1. Ensure that the thermal design can be tested 2. Ensure that the model has sufficient detail for accurate predictions 3. Ensure that the power associated with all active control devices is predicted 4. Avoid unit changes for existing models. This paper documents the difficulties presented when these recommendations were not followed.

High speed multiwire photon camera

An improved multiwire proportional counter camera having particular utility in the field of clinical nuclear medicine imaging. The detector utilizes direct coupled, low impedance, high speed delay lines, the segments of which are capacitor-inductor networks. A pile-up rejection test is provided to reject confused events otherwise caused by multiple ionization events occuring during the readout window.

Single chip camera device having double sampling operation

A single chip camera device is formed on a single substrate including an image acquisition portion for control portion and the timing circuit formed on the substrate. The timing circuit also controls the photoreceptors in a double sampling mode in which are reset level is first read and then after an integration time a charged level is read.

CHAMP (Camera, Handlens, and Microscope Probe)

CHAMP (Camera, Handlens And Microscope Probe)is a novel field microscope capable of color imaging with continuously variable spatial resolution from infinity imaging down to diffraction-limited microscopy (3 micron/pixel). As a robotic arm-mounted imager, CHAMP supports stereo imaging with variable baselines, can continuously image targets at an increasing magnification during an arm approach, can provide precision rangefinding estimates to targets, and can accommodate microscopic imaging of rough surfaces through a image filtering process called z-stacking. CHAMP was originally developed through the Mars Instrument Development Program (MIDP) in support of robotic field investigations, but may also find application in new areas such as robotic in-orbit servicing and maintenance operations associated with spacecraft and human operations. We overview CHAMP'S instrument performance and basic design considerations below.

Windy Mars: A Dynamic Planet as Seen by the HiRISE Camera

With a dynamic atmosphere and a large supply of particulate material, the surface of Mars is heavily influenced by wind-driven, or aeolian, processes. The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provides a new view of Martian geology, with the ability to see decimeter-size features. Current sand movement, and evidence for recent bedform development, is observed. Dunes and ripples generally exhibit complex surfaces down to the limits of resolution. Yardangs have diverse textures, with some being massive at HiRISE scale, others having horizontal and cross-cutting layers of variable character, and some exhibiting blocky and polygonal morphologies. 'Reticulate' (fine polygonal texture) bedforms are ubiquitous in the thick mantle at the highest elevations.
