Binary phase digital reflection holograms - Fabrication and potential applications

A novel technique for the fabrication of binary-phase computer-generated reflection holograms is described. By use of integrated circuit technology, the holographic pattern is etched into a silicon wafer and then aluminum coated to make a reflection hologram. Because these holograms reflect virtually all the incident radiation, they may find application in machining with high-power lasers. A number of possible modifications of the hologram fabrication procedure are discussed.

Perception of binary acoustic events associated with the first heart sound

The resolving power of the auditory apparatus permits discrete vibrations associated with cardiac activity to be perceived as one or more events. Irrespective of the vibratory combinations recorded by conventional phonocardiography, in normal adults and in most adult patients auscultators tend to discriminate only two discrete events associated with the first heart sound S1. It is stressed that the heart sound S4 may be present when a binary acoustic event associated with S1 occurs in the sequence 'low pitched sound preceding high pitched sound', i.e., its components are perceived by auscultation as 'dull-sharp'. The question of S4 audibility arises in those individuals, normal and diseased, in whom the major components of S1 ought to be, at least clinically, at their customary high pitch and indeed on the PCG appear as high frequency oscillations. It is revealed that the apparent audibility of recorded S4 is not related to P-R interval, P-S4 interval, or relative amplitude of S4. The significant S4-LFC (low frequency component of S1) differences can be related to acoustic modification of the early component of S1.

Binary X-ray stars and supernovae of type I

Most of the strong galactic X-ray sources must be low-mass close binary systems, such as Her X-1 and Sco X-1. Two evolutionary scenarios are discussed, both involving type I supernovae that occur when mass-accreting white dwarfs are driven over their mass limit. In one, accepting the correctness of the idea that a neutron star or black hole is the seat of the X-ray emission, the SN occurs before the system is an X-ray source. Another possibility is that the white dwarf is the X-ray source, just prior to its collapse and the ensuing SN.

Binary X-ray pulsars

Recent progress in the study of the pulse profiles of the nine known binary X-ray pulsars is discussed. The sources considered include SMC X-1, Her X-1, Cen X-3, A0535+26, GX1+4, 3U 0900-40, A1118-61, GX301-2, and 3U 0352+30. Sample X-ray profiles for these sources are provided, and general features exhibited by the profiles are identified. It is noted that the apparent existence of a gap in the period distribution of X-ray pulsars, in the range from about 5 to 100 sec, seems to be genuine within obvious statistical limitations and is probably not an observational effect. Two explanations for the production of X-ray pulsations are examined: one requiring a temporal modulation of mass accretion onto the surface of a neutron star and another requiring the funnelling of matter along magnetic field lines to the neutron star's surface.

On the binary nature of AM Herculis

Emission lines of hydrogen and helium observed in the spectrum of AM Her show a 3.1-hour radial-velocity variation. The period and amplitude of the variation indicate a close low-mass system different from previously known X-ray binaries. The period of the radial-velocity variation is significantly different from the period of optical-polarization variation.

Structure of the iron fluorescence line in X-ray binaries

The paper presents an approximate solution to the iron K alpha line transfer problem in a stellar atmosphere illuminated by an external X-ray source as in a binary X-ray system. The emergent Comptonized line profile can independently yield information on the abundance of heavy elements in the primary atmosphere and on the solid angle subtended by the primary at the X-ray source.

The indirect binary n-cube array

The array is built from a large number (hundreds or thousands) of microprocessors or microcomputers linked through a switching network into an indirect binary n-cube array. Control is two level, the array operating synchronously, or in lock step, at the higher level, and with the broadcast commands being locally interpreted into rewritable microinstruction streams in the microprocessors and in the switch control units. The key to the design is the switching array. By properly programming it, the array can be made into a wide variety of virtual arrays which are well adapted to a wide range of applications. It is believed that the flexibility of the switching array can be used to obtain fault avoidance, which appears necessary in any highly parallel design.

An upper bound for codes in a two-access binary erasure channel

A method for determining an upper bound for the size of a code for a two-access binary erasure channel is presented. For uniquely decodable codes, this bound gives a combinatorial proof of a result by Liao. Examples of the bound are given for codes with minimum distance 4.

Accreting neutron stars in highly compact binary systems and the nature of 3U 1626-67

We discuss the existence of pulsing X-ray sources that consist of neutron stars in highly compact binary systems (orbital periods not more than Od3), undergoing accretion from low-mass late-type dwarf or degenerate-dwarf companions. An appropriate mass transfer rate can be driven by the decay of the orbit due to gravitational radiation, a self-excited wind, and/or the evolution of the companion. Such a system may result from the evolution of a cataclysmic variable, wherein a degenerate dwarf collapses to form a neutron star after accreting sufficient mass to exceed the Chandrasekhar limit. We apply this model to the 7s7 X-ray pulsar 3U 1626-67, and demonstrate that it can explain the apparent lack of Doppler shifts in the X-ray pulsations from this source. The model may also account for other observed properties of the source, including (1) the apparent faintness and large ultraviolet excess of the optical counterpart, (2) the lack of X-ray eclipses, and (3) an approximately 1000 s quasi-periodic oscillation in the source intensity that was recently observed with the SAS 3 satellite.

Apparatus and method for stabilized phase detection for binary signal tracking loops

Apparatus and method is presented for phase detection in binary signal tracking loops wherein two bandpass detectors are alternately interchanged between electrical connection with two local code reference tracking signals in order to cancel any adverse effect of gain imbalance in the bandpass detectors and direct current offset or drift. The detectors are time shared in multiplex fashion between the two local reference signals.

Geometric relationships for homogenization in single-phase binary alloy systems

A semiempirical relationship is presented which describes the extent of interaction between constituents in single-phase binary alloy systems having planar, cylindrical, or spherical interfaces. This relationship makes possible a quick estimate of the extent of interaction without lengthy numerical calculations. It includes two parameters which are functions of mean concentration and interface geometry. Experimental data for the copper-nickel system are included to demonstrate the usefulness of this relationship.

Effect of concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient on homogenization kinetics in multiphase binary alloy systems

Diffusion calculations were performed to establish the conditions under which concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient was important in single, two, and three phase binary alloy systems. Finite-difference solutions were obtained for each type of system using diffusion coefficient variations typical of those observed in real alloy systems. Solutions were also obtained using average diffusion coefficients determined by taking a logarithmic average of each diffusion coefficient variation considered. The constant diffusion coefficient solutions were used as reference in assessing diffusion coefficient variation effects. Calculations were performed for planar, cylindrical, and spherical geometries in order to compare the effect of diffusion coefficient variations with the effect of interface geometries. In most of the cases considered, the diffusion coefficient of the major-alloy phase was the key parameter that controlled the kinetics of interdiffusion.

Neutrinos from binary pulsars

It is shown that binary systems containing moderately young pulsars may emit high-energy neutrinos (between 1 and 100 TeV) at detectable levels. The pulsars are assumed to have total luminosities of the order of 10 to the 38th erg/sec. The neutrinos are produced by high energy particles (e.g. protons) from the pulsar striking the companion. Cyg X3 may be detectable in high-energy neutrinos if it emits greater than about 10 to the 35th erg/sec in high-energy protons. There may be a whole class of objects like Cyg X3, but obscured by thick accretion clouds.
