Entanglement between two disjoint universes

We use the replica method to compute the entanglement entropy of a universe without gravity entangled in a thermofield-double-like state with a disjoint gravitating universe. Including wormholes between replicas of the latter gives an entropy functional which includes an “island” on the gravitating universe. We solve the back-reaction equations when the cosmological constant is negative to show that this island coincides with a causal shadow region that is created by the entanglement in the gravitating geometry. At high entanglement temperatures, the island contribution to the entropy functional leads to a bound on entanglement entropy, analogous to the Page behavior of evaporating black holes. We demonstrate that the entanglement wedge of the non-gravitating universe grows with the entanglement temperature until, eventually, the gravitating universe can be entirely reconstructed from the non-gravitating one.

Nonlinear evolution of quadratic gravity in 3 + 1 dimensions

We present a numerically stable system of ( 3 + 1 ) evolution equations for the nonlinear gravitational dynamics of quadratic-curvature corrections to General Relativity (quadratic gravity). We also report on the numerical implementation of these evolution equations. We recover a well-known linear instability and gather evidence that—aside from said instability—quadratic gravity exhibits a physically stable Ricci-flat subsector. In particular, we demonstrate that Teukolsky-wave perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole as well as a full binary inspiral (evolved up to merger) remain Ricci flat throughout evolution. Furthermore, this suggests that, at least in vacuum, classical quadratic gravity can mimic General Relativity, even in the fully nonlinear strong-gravity regime.

Rotationally Driven Ultraviolet Emission of Red Giant Stars

Main-sequence stars exhibit a clear rotation-activity relationship, in which rapidly rotating stars drive strong chromospheric/coronal ultraviolet and X-ray emission. While the vast majority of red giant stars are inactive, a few percent exhibit strong ultraviolet emission. Here we use a sample of 133 red giant stars observed by Sloan Digital Sky Survey APOGEE and Galaxy Evolution Explorer to demonstrate an empirical relationship between near-UV (NUV) excess and rotational velocity (v sin i). Beyond this simple relationship, we find that NUV excess also correlates with rotation period and with Rossby number in a manner that shares broadly similar trends to those found in M dwarfs, including activity saturation among rapid rotators. Our data also suggest that the most extremely rapidly rotating giants may exhibit so-called supersaturation, which could be caused by centrifugal stripping of these stars rotating at a high fraction of breakup speed. As an example application of our empirical rotation-activity relation, we demonstrate that the NUV emission observed from a recently reported system comprising a red giant with a black hole companion is fully consistent with arising from the rapidly rotating red giant in that system. Most fundamentally, our findings suggest a common origin of chromospheric activity in rotation and convection for cool stars from main sequence to red giant stages of evolution.

Inside the hologram: reconstructing the bulk observer’s experience

We develop a holographic framework for describing the experience of bulk observers in AdS/CFT, that allows us to compute the proper time and energy distribution measured along any bulk worldline. Our method is formulated directly in the CFT language and is universal: it does not require knowledge of the bulk geometry as an input. When used to propagate operators along the worldline of an observer falling into an eternal black hole, our proposal resolves a conceptual puzzle raised by Marolf and Wall. Notably, the prescription does not rely on an external dynamical Hamiltonian or the AdS boundary conditions and is, therefore, outlining a general framework for the emergence of time.

A Schwarzian on the stretched horizon

Abstract It is well known that the Euclidean black hole action has a boundary term at the horizon proportional to the area. I show that if the horizon is replaced by a stretched horizon with appropriate boundary conditions, a new boundary term appears, described by a Schwarzian action similar to the recently discovered boundary actions in “nearly anti-de Sitter” gravity.

Anatomy of deconfinement

In the weak coupling limit of ${\rm SU}(N)$ Yang-Mills theory and the ${\rm O}(N)$ vector model, explicit state counting allows us to demonstrate the existence of a partially deconfined phase: $M$ of $N$ colors deconfine, and $\frac{M}{N}$ gradually grows from zero (confinement) to one (complete deconfinement). We point out that the mechanism admits a simple interpretation in the form of spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry. In terms of the dual gravity theory, such breaking occurs during the formation of a black hole. We speculate whether the breaking and restoration of gauge symmetry can serve as an alternative definition of the deconfinement transition in theories without center symmetry, such as QCD. We also discuss the role of the color degrees of freedom in the emergence of the bulk geometry in holographic duality.

A Comparison of Properties of Quasars with and without Rapid Broad Absorption Line Variability

We investigate the correlation between rest-frame UV flux variability of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars and their variability in BAL equivalent widths (EWs) in a various timescale from <10 days to a few years in the quasar rest frame. We use the data sets of BAL EWs taken by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project and photometric data taken by the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory in the g and R bands and the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System in grizy bands. Our results are summarized as follows: (1) the distributions of flux variability versus BAL variability show weak, moderate, or a strong positive correlation; (2) there is no significant difference in flux variability amplitudes between BAL quasars with significant short timescale EW variability (called class S1) and without (class S2); (3) in all timescales considered in this paper, the class S1 quasars show systematically larger BAL variability amplitudes than those of the class S2 quasars; and (4) there are possible correlations between BAL variability and physical parameters of the quasars such as black hole masses (moderate positive), Eddington ratios, and accretion disk temperature (strong negative) in the class S2 quasars. These results indicate that the BAL variability requires changing in the ionizing continuum and an ancillary mechanism such as variability in X-ray shielding gas located at the innermost region of an accretion disk.

Moving mirror model for quasithermal radiation fields

We analyze the flow of energy and entropy emitted by a class of moving mirror trajectories which provide models for important aspects of the radiation fields produced by black hole evaporation. The mirror radiation fields provide natural, concrete examples of processes that follow thermal distributions for long periods, accompanied by transients which are brief and carry little net energy, yet ultimately represent pure quantum states. In conclusion, a burst of negative energy flux is a generic feature of these fields, but it need not be prominent.

Hayden-Preskill decoding from noisy Hawking radiation

In the Hayden-Preskill thought experiment, the Hawking radiation emitted before a quantum state is thrown into the black hole is used along with the radiation collected later for the purpose of decoding the quantum state. A natural question is how the recoverability is affected if the stored early radiation is damaged or subject to decoherence, and/or the decoding protocol is imperfectly performed. We study the recoverability in the thought experiment in the presence of decoherence or noise in the storage of early radiation.

The rebrightening of a ROSAT -selected tidal disruption event: repeated weak partial disruption flares from a quiescent galaxy?

The ROSAT-selected tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate RX J133157.6-324319.7 (J1331) was detected in 1993 as a bright [0.2–2 keV flux of (1.0 ± 0.1) × 10 -12 erg s -1 cm -2 ], ultra-soft (kT = 0.11 ± 0.03 keV) X-ray flare from a quiescent galaxy (z = 0.051 89). During its fifth all-sky survey (eRASS5) in 2022, Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG)/ eROSITA detected the repeated flaring of J1331, where it had rebrightened to an observed 0.2–2 keV flux of (6.0 ± 0.7) × 10 -13 erg s -1 cm -2 , with spectral properties (kT = 0.115 ± 0.007 keV) consistent with the ROSAT-observed flare ~30 yr earlier. In this work, we report on X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and radio observations of this system. During a pointed XMM observation ~17 d after the eRASS5 detection, J1331 was not detected in the 0.2–2 keV band, constraining the 0.2–2 keV flux to have decayed by a factor of ≳40 over this period. Given the extremely low probability (~5 × 10 -6 ) of observing two independent full TDEs from the same galaxy over a 30 yr period, we consider the variability seen in J1331 to be likely caused by two partial TDEs involving a star on an elliptical orbit around a black hole. J1331-like flares show faster rise and decay time-scales [$\mathcal {O}(\mathrm{d})$] compared to standard TDE candidates, with negligible ongoing accretion at late times post-disruption between outbursts.

Precision microstate counting for the entropy of wrapped M5-branes

We study the large N expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories arising from N M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3- manifold, M 3 . Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of PSL(N, C) Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on M 3 . Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the invariants, we compute the twisted partition functions in the large N limit including perturbative corrections to all orders in 1/N . Surprisingly, the perturbative expansion terminates at finite order. The leading part of the partition function is of order N 3 and agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the dual black holes. The subleading part, in particular the log N -terms in the field theory partition function is found to precisely match the one-loop quantum corrections in the dual eleven dimensional supergravity. The field theory results of other terms in 1/N provide a stringent prediction for higher order corrections in the holographic dual, which is M-theory.

Asymptotic Weyl double copy

A characteristic value formulation of the Weyl double copy leads to an asymptotic formulation. We find that the Weyl double copy holds asymptotically in cases where the full solution is algebraically general, using rotating STU supergravity black holes as an example. The asymptotic formulation provides clues regarding the relation between asymptotic symmetries that follows from the double copy. Using the C-metric as an example, we show that a previous interpretation of this gravity solution as a superrotation has a single copy analogue relating the appropriate Liénard-Wiechert potential to a large gauge transformation.

An Extension of the Athena++ Code Framework for Radiation-magnetohydrodynamics in General Relativity Using a Finite-solid-angle Discretization

We extend the general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) capabilities of Athena++ to incorporate radiation. The intensity field in each finite-volume cell is discretized in angle, with explicit transport in both space and angle properly accounting for the effects of gravity on null geodesics, and with matter and radiation coupled in a locally implicit fashion. Here we describe the numerical procedure in detail, verifying its correctness with a suite of tests. Motivated in particular by black hole accretion in the high-accretion-rate, thin-disk regime, we demonstrate the application of the method to this problem. With excellent scaling on flagship computing clusters, the port of the algorithm to the GPU-enabled AthenaK code now allows the simulation of many previously intractable radiation-GRMHD systems.

SPISEA: A Python-based Simple Stellar Population Synthesis Code for Star Clusters

We present Stellar Population Interface for Stellar Evolution and Atmospheres (SPISEA), an open-source Python package that simulates simple stellar populations. The strength of SPISEA is its modular interface which offers the user control of 13 input properties including (but not limited to) the initial mass function, stellar multiplicity, extinction law, and the metallicity-dependent stellar evolution and atmosphere model grids used. The user also has control over the initial–final mass relation in order to produce compact stellar remnants (black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs). We demonstrate several outputs produced by the code, including color–magnitude diagrams, HR-diagrams, luminosity functions, and mass functions. SPISEA is object-oriented and extensible, and we welcome contributions from the community. The code and documentation are available on GitHub (https://github.com/astropy/SPISEA) and ReadtheDocs (https://spisea.readthedocs.io/en/latest/), respectively.

AdS 3 gravity and random CFT

We compute the path integral of three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant on spaces which are topologically a torus times an interval. These are Euclidean wormholes, which smoothly interpolate between two asymptotically Euclidean AdS 3 regions with torus boundary. From our results we obtain the spectral correlations between BTZ black hole microstates near threshold, as well as extract the spectral form factor at fixed momentum, which has linear growth in time with small fluctuations around it. The low-energy limit of these correlations is precisely that of a double-scaled random matrix ensemble with Virasoro symmetry. Our findings suggest that if pure three-dimensional gravity has a holographic dual, then the dual is an ensemble which generalizes random matrix theory.

Outflow from Outer-arm Starburst in a Grazing Collision between Galaxies

Gemini NIFS K-band spectra and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array {sup 12}CO J=1→0, HCO{sup +}, and 100 GHz continuum observations are used to study a bright starburst clump on an outer arm of the interacting galaxy NGC 2207. This clump emits 23% of the total 24 μm flux of the galaxy pair and has an optically opaque dust cone extending out of its 170 pc core. The measured CO accounts for the dark cone extinction if almost all the gas and dust there are in front of the star clusters. An associated approaching CO outflow has v {sub z} ~ 16 km s{sup -1}, an estimated molecular mass 8 × 10{sup 6} M {sub ⊙}, and rises to heights ~0.9 kpc. A receding CO outflow on the far side with v {sub z} ~ 28 km s{sup -1} is less extensive. The observed star formation in the core over 10 Myr can supply the dark cone kinetic energy of roughly 2 × 10{sup 52} erg via supernovae and stellar winds. Other signs of intense activity are a variable radio continuum, suggesting an embedded supernova or other outburst; X-ray emission possibly from an X-ray binary or intermediate-mass black hole, depending on the extinction; and Brγ and He i lines with 82 km s{sup -1} line widths and fluxes consistent with excitation by embedded O-type stars. According to previous models, the retrograde encounter suffered by NGC 2207 caused the loss of angular momentum. This compressed its outer disk. We suggest that the resulting inward crashing stream hit a massive H i clump on the preexisting spiral arm and triggered the observed starburst.

A one-loop test of the near-AdS 2 /near-CFT 1 correspondence

We analyze quantum fluctuations around black hole solutions to the Jackiw-Teitelboim model. We use harmonic analysis on Euclidean AdS 2 to show that the logarithmic corrections to the partition function are determined entirely by quadratic holomorphic differentials, even when conformal symmetry is broken and harmonic modes are no longer true zero modes. Our quantum-corrected partition function agrees precisely with the SYK result. We argue that our effective quantum field theory methods and results generalize to other theories of two-dimensional dilaton gravity.

Validating sequential Monte Carlo for gravitational-wave inference

Nested sampling (NS) is the preferred stochastic sampling algorithm for gravitational-wave inference for compact binary coalescences. It can handle the complex nature of the gravitational-wave likelihood surface and provides an estimate of the Bayesian model evidence. However, there is another class of algorithms that meets the same requirements, but has not been used for gravitational-wave analyses: sequential Monte Carlo (SMC), an extension of importance sampling that maps samples from an initial density to a target density via a series of intermediate densities. In this work, we validate a type of SMC algorithm, called persistent sampling (PS), for gravitational-wave inference. We consider a range of different scenarios including binary black holes and binary neutron stars and real and simulated data and show that PS produces results that are consistent with NS whilst being, on average, 2 times more efficient and 2.74 times faster. This demonstrates that PS is a viable alternative to NS that should be considered for future gravitational-wave analyses.
