Linear Theory of Electromagnetic Ion Beam Instabilities in the Earth’s Forshock: Peter Gary’s Contributions (1981-1991)

We discuss Peter Gary’s contributions to the understanding of the origin and properties of ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves in the Earth’s foreshock during the period when the International Sun Earth Explorer spacecraft (ISEE-1 and -2) provided unique data about the plasma and wave environment in this region. Peter’s work concerning the linear theory of electromagnetic ion beam instabilities is contained in five journal articles and then summarized in a review article, all of which are discussed here. Brief summaries of observations and theory prior to ISEE as well as to later work are also included.

Estimates of Permeability of Water in Rare Earth Silicates Using the Modified Theory of Deal and Grove

The salient elements of the theory of oxide growth under an environmental barrier are reviewed. In addition, the results from steam oxidation tests recently conducted on environmental barrier coated specimens are reported. The oxide thickness between the coating and substrate are reported as a function of time. Also, the results from previously conducted steam oxidation tests are reviewed. An approach to estimate the permeability of water through the various coating systems using the oxide thickness versus time measurements and the theory of oxide growth is demonstrated. Although the steam oxidation tests may have been performed under disparate conditions, the approach allows one to rank the protection efficiency of the various coating systems against substrate oxidation on an equivalent basis.

Theory of thin-walled rods

Starting with the Love equations for bending of extensible shells, "principal stress states" are sought for a thin-walled rod of arbitrary but open cross section. Principal stress states exclude those local states arising from end conditions which damp out with distance from the ends. It is found that for rods of intermediate length, long enough to avoid local bending at a support, and short enough that elementary torsion and bending are not the most significant stress states, four principal states exist. Three of these states are associated with the planar distribution of axial stress and are equivalent to the engineering theory of extension and bending of solid sections. The fourth state resembles that which has been called in the literature "bending stress due to torsional", except that cross sections are permitted to bend and the shear along the center line of the cross section is permitted to differ from zero.
