Large space telescope engineering scale model optical design

The objective is to develop the detailed design and tolerance data for the LST engineering scale model optical system. This will enable MSFC to move forward to the optical element procurement phase and also to evaluate tolerances, manufacturing requirements, assembly/checkout procedures, reliability, operational complexity, stability requirements of the structure and thermal system, and the flexibility to change and grow.

Advanced Avionics Breadboard Executive Design and Implementation

The advanced avionics breadboard (AAB) executive evolved from an effort to design and develop an avionics system. This executive is unique in that it supervises a triple redundant avionics computer system. Three IBM System 4 Pi/CP computers, operating synchronously and executing identical software, comprise the central processors which route data to and from a data bus via an input/output controller. The executive's basic function is to provide application programs with an efficient software structure within which to perform specific avionics application tasks. Although implemented in a triplex data management system, the AAB executive contains the flexibility to be adapted to other systems with minimal change.

Multi-slit spectrograph and H alpha Doppler system

Description of the design and operation of a multiple-entrance-slit spectrograph, built for time-lapse photography of the spectra of flares and other transient solar phenomena. This spectrograph employs narrow-band filters to limit the wavelength range of the spectrograph to a few angstroms centered at H-alpha or other spectral lines. A polarizing beamsplitter, prior to the slits, provides a prefiltered second solar image to a narrow band H-alpha Doppler filter for simultaneous photography in the wings of the H-alpha line. The spectrograph and the H-alpha Doppler system constitute a flexible instrument in which components may be substituted to achieve different passband widths, image scales, dispersions, and corresponding numbers and spacings of adjacent spectra at a selected wavelength.

Space vehicle onboard command encoder

A flexible onboard encoder system was designed for the space shuttle. The following areas were covered: (1) implementation of the encoder design into hardware to demonstrate the various encoding algorithms/code formats, (2) modulation techniques in a single hardware package to maintain comparable reliability and link integrity of the existing link systems and to integrate the various techniques into a single design using current technology. The primary function of the command encoder is to accept input commands, generated either locally onboard the space shuttle or remotely from the ground, format and encode the commands in accordance with the payload input requirements and appropriately modulate a subcarrier for transmission by the baseband RF modulator. The following information was provided: command encoder system design, brassboard hardware design, test set hardware and system packaging, and software.

Anion selective membrane

Experimental anion permselective membranes were prepared and tested for their suitability as cell separators in a chemical redox power storage system being developed at NASA-Lewis Research Center. The goals of long-term (1000 hr) oxidative and thermal stability at 80 C in FeCl3 and CrCl3 electrolytes were met by most of the weak base and strong base amino exchange groups considered in the program. Good stability is exhibited by several of the membrane substrate resins. These are 'styrene' divinylbenzene copolymer and PVC film. At least four membrane systems produce strong flexible films with electrochemical properties (resistivity, cation transfer) superior to those of the 103QZL, the most promising commercial membrane. The physical and chemical properties of the resins are listed.

RMS massless arm dynamics capability in the SVDS

The equations of motion for the remote manipulator system, assuming that the masses and inertias of the arm can be neglected, are developed for implementation into the space vehicle dynamics simulation (SVDS) program for the Orbiter payload system. The arm flexibility is incorporated into the equations by the computation of flexibility terms for use in the joint servo model. The approach developed in this report is based on using the Jacobian transformation matrix to transform force and velocity terms between the configuration space and the task space to simplify the form of the equations.

On the design of optimal controllers with certain structural constraints

This paper considers the problem of designing certain structurally constrained optimal regulators for linear systems subjected to additive white process noise and measurement noise. Three types of controller structures are considered, using direct output feedback, prespecified time constant filters, and optimal dynamic compensators. Necessary conditions are obtained for minimizing quadratic performance criteria. The techniques are demonstrated by application to a helicopter/slung load system, and a flexible space station.

Aeroelastic analysis of wind energy conversion systems

An aeroelastic investigation of horizontal axis wind turbines is described. The study is divided into two simpler areas; (1) the aeroelastic stability of a single blade on a rigid tower; and (2) the mechanical vibrations of the rotor system on a flexible tower. Some resulting instabilities and forced vibration behavior are described.

The data system dynamic simulation /DSDS/

The paper describes the development by NASA of the data system dynamic simulation (DSDS) which provides a data system simulation capability for a broad range of programs, with the capability to model and simulate all or any portion of an end-to-end data system to multiple levels of fidelity. Versatility is achieved by specifying parameters which define the performance characteristics of data system components, and by specifying control and data paths in a data system. DSDS helps reduce overall simulation cost and the time required for obtaining a data systems analysis, and helps provide both early realistic representations of data systems and the flexibility to study design changes and operating strategies.

Modal analysis of turborotors using planar modes - Theory

The generalized dynamic equations of motion have been obtained by the direct stiffness method for multimass flexible rotor bearing systems including the effects of gyroscopic moments, disk skew, and rotor acceleration. A set of undamped critical speed mode shapes calculated from the average horizontal and vertical bearing stiffness is used to transform the equations of motion into a set of coupled modal equations of motion. The modal equations are coupled by the generalized bearing coefficients and the gyroscopic moments. An analysis using only undamped critical speeds or decoupled modal analysis assuming proportional damping may lead to erroneous results. This paper presents a rapid method of calculating rotor resonance speeds with their corresponding amplification factors, stability and unbalance response of turborotors. Examples of the application of this modal approach are presented and results are compared to those of other methods such as matrix transfer analysis.

Advanced control technology for LSST platform

Basic technology in the design, mechanization, and analysis of control systems for large flexible space structures was examined. The focus of the platform control effort was on pointing control. The reason for this emphasis was because of the unique problems in this area posed by multiple independent experiment packages operating simultaneously on a single platform. Attitude control and stationkeeping were also addressed for future consideration.

Pitfalls and guidelines for the numerical evaluation of moderate-order system frequency response

The design and evaluation of a feedback control system via frequency response methods relies heavily upon numerical methods. In application, one can usually develop low order simulation models which for the most part are devoid of numerical problems. However, when complex feedback interactions, for example, between instrument control systems and their flexible mounting structure, must be evaluated, simulation models become moderate to large order and numerical problems become common. A large body of relevant numerical error analysis literature is summarized in a large language understandable to nonspecialists. The intent is to provide engineers using simulation models with an engineering feel for potential numerical problems without getting intertwined in the complexities of the associated mathematical theory. Guidelines are also provided by suggesting alternate state of the art methods which have good numerical evaluation characteristics.

LSS reference platform control

The long range objective of this task is to develop basic technology in the design, mechanization, and analysis of control systems for large flexible space structures. The focus of the FY'81 platform control effort was on the pointing control problems associated with multiple independently controlled experiment packages operating simultaneously on a single platform. Particular emphasis was placed on obtaining a quantitative comparison of controller performance with and without base motion compensation.
