Electronic properties of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors as seen by Cu and O NMR/NQR

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) allow the investigation of electronic properties at the atomic level. We will report on such studies of typical members of the the Y-Ba-Cu-O family such as YBa2Cu30(6 + x) (1-2-3-(6 + x)), YBa2Cu4O8 (1-2-4) and Y2Ba4Cu7015 (2-4-7) with many examples of recent work performed in our laboratory. In particular, we will deal with Knight shift and relaxation studies of copper and oxygen. We will discuss important issues of current studies such as: (1) Existence of a common electronic spin-susceptibility in the planes (and perhaps in the chains) of 1-2-4; (2) Strong evidence for the existence of a pseudo spin-gap of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations in 1-2-4 and 2-4-7; (3) Evidence for d-wave pairing in 1-2-4; (4) Strong coupling of inequivalent Cu-O planes in 2-4-7 and possible origin for the high Tc value of this compound; and (5) The possibility to describe NMR data in the framework of a charge-excitation picture.

Spectroscopy of infrared-active phonons in high-temperature superconductors

For a large variety of superconducting materials both experimental and theoretical lattice dynamical studies have been performed to date. The assignment of the observed infrared- and Raman-active phonon modes to the particular lattice eigenmodes is generally accepted. We will concentrate here upon the analysis of the changes of the infrared-phonon parameters (frequency and linewidth) upon entering the superconducting state which, as will be shown, may provide information on the magnitude of the superconductivity-related gap and its dependence on the superconducting transition temperature Tc.

Correlation between fabrication factor and superconducting properties of the Tl-and-Bi-based high-Tc superconductor

Large critical current densities (J(sub c)) were obtained in c axis oriented Tl-1 223/Ag composite tapes fabricated by spraying methods without a vacuum. Transport measurements at 77K under a zero field indicated a J(sub c) of 9 x 10(exp 4) A/sq cm and 7 x 10(exp 3) A/sq cm at 1T for the tapes fabricated by spray pyrolysis. The novel GPM method was also applied for Bi-2212/Ag PIT composite wire, and found to be very effective for improving the distribution of voids, which caused from the melt-solidifying process. The GPM showed a marked effect for obtaining homogeneous long wire. A 1 T class coil was successfully fabricated with monocore wire.

Chemical stabilization and high pressure synthesis of Ba-free Hg-based superconductors, (Hg,M)Sr2Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O(y)(n=1 to approximately 3)

A homologous series of new Hg-based HTSC compounds, (Hg,M)Sr2Ca(n - 1)Cu(n)P(y) with n = 1 to 3, have been synthesized. The stabilization of the pure phases have been accomplished by chemical doping of third elements such as M = Cr, Mo and Re. While the Hgl2O1(n = 1) phase was readily obtained in this way, it was necessary to simultaneously dope Y into the Ca site to stabilize the Hg1212(n = 2) phase. On the other hand, single-phase Y-free Hg1212(n = 2) and Hg1223 (n = 3) samples were synthesized only under a high pressure of 6 GPa. In sharp contrast to the Ba containing compounds, all the samples prepared in the present study have been quite stable during the synthesis and no deterioration in air has been observed after the preparation.

Progress in development of tapes and magnets made from Bi-2223 superconductors

Long lengths of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) tapes made by powder-in-tube processing have been wound into coils. Performance of the coils has been measured at temperatures of 4.2 to 77 K, and microstructures have been examined by x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy and then related to superconducting properties. A summary of recent results and an overview of future goals are presented.

High temperature superconductors as a technological discontinuity in the power cable industry

The advent of superconductivity above 77 K represents to the power cable industry a technological discontinuity analogous to that seen in the copper telecommunications industry by the arrival of optical fibers. This phenomenon is discussed along with technical criteria and performance targets needed for high temperature superconducting wire to have an economic impact in transmission cables.

Improvement of critical current density in thallium-based (Tl,Bi)Sr(1.6)Ba(0.4)Ca2Cu3O(x) superconductors

Epitaxial (Tl,Bi)Sr(1.6)Ba(0.4)Ca2Cu3O(x) ((Tl,Bi)-1223) thin films on (100) single crystal LaAlO3 substrates were synthesized by a two-step procedure. Phase development, microstructure, and relationships between film and substrate were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Resistance versus temperature, zero-field-cooled and field cooled magnetization, and transport critical current density (J(sub c)) were measured. The zero-resistance temperature was 105-111 K. J(sub c) at 77 K and zero field was greater than 2 x 10(exp 6) A/sq cm. The films exhibited good flux pinning properties.

Preparation and Properties of High-T(sub c) Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O Thick Film Superconductors on YSZ Substrates

An evaluation of four firing profiles was performed to determine the optimum processing conditions for producing high-T(sub c) Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thick films on yttria-stabilized zirconia substrates. Using these four profiles, the effects of sintering temperatures of 830-850 C and soak times of 0.5 to 12 hours were examined. In this study, T-c, zero values of 100 K were obtained using a firing profile in which the films were sintered for 1.5 to 2 hours at 840 to 845 C and then quenched to room temperature. X-ray diffraction analyses of these specimens confirmed the presence of the high-T(sub c) phase. Films which were similarly fired and furnace cooled from the peak processing temperature exhibited a two-step superconductive transition to zero resistance, with T-c,zero values ranging from 85 to 92 K. The other firing profiles evaluated in this investigation yielded specimens which either exhibited critical transition temperatures below 90 K or did not exhibit a superconductive transition above 77 K.

Superconductor Semiconductor Research for NASA's Submillimeter Wavelength Missions

Wideband, coherent submillimeter wavelength detectors of the highest sensitivity are essential for the success of NASA's future radio astronomical and atmospheric space missions. The critical receiver components which need to be developed are ultra- wideband mixers and suitable local oscillator sources. This research is focused on two topics, (1) the development of reliable varactor diodes that will generate the required output power for NASA missions in the frequency range from 300 GHZ through 2.5 THz, and (2) the development of wideband superconductive mixer elements for the same frequency range.

High Temperature Superconductor Josephson Weak Links

High T_c edge-geometry SNS microbridges have been fabricated using ion-damaged YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-x) (YBCO) and a nonsuperconducting phase of YBCO (N-YBCO) as normal metals. Optimization of the ion milling process used for YBCO edge formation and cleaning has resulted in ion-damage barrier devices which exhibit I-V characteristics consistent with the Resistively-Shunted-Junction (RSJ) model, with typical current densities (J_c) of approximately 5 x 10^6 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K. Characterization of N-YBCO films suggests that N-YBCO is the orthorhombic YBCO phase with oxygen disorder suppressing T_c...
