Hybrid and concatenated coding applications.

Results of a study to evaluate the performance and implementation complexity of a concatenated and a hybrid coding system for moderate-speed deep-space applications. It is shown that with a total complexity of less than three times that of the basic Viterbi decoder, concatenated coding improves a constraint length 8 rate 1/3 Viterbi decoding system by 1.1 and 2.6 dB at bit error probabilities of 0.0001 and one hundred millionth, respectively. With a somewhat greater total complexity, the hybrid coding system is shown to obtain a 0.9-dB computational performance improvement over the basic rate 1/3 sequential decoding system. Although substantial, these complexities are much less than those required to achieve the same performances with more complex Viterbi or sequential decoder systems.

Image analysis techniques associated with automatic data base generation.

This paper considers some basic problems relating to automatic data base generation from imagery, the primary emphasis being on fast and efficient automatic extraction of relevant pictorial information. Among the techniques discussed are recursive implementations of some particular types of filters which are much faster than FFT implementations, a 'sequential similarity detection' technique of implementing matched filters, and sequential linear classification of multispectral imagery. Several applications of the above techniques are presented including enhancement of underwater, aerial and radiographic imagery, detection and reconstruction of particular types of features in images, automatic picture registration and classification of multiband aerial photographs to generate thematic land use maps.

Investigation of mounting discrete chip components for hybrid microelectronic applications.

In the assembly of hybrid microcircuits, passive and active discrete chip components are attached by epoxy cements and by solders. This study was initiated to determine the integrity of such attachments. Alumina substrates were subjected to a group of thermal and mechanical test environments defined by test methods in MIL-STD-883. Lot samples of substrates with assembly variations were subjected to separately applied testing and to serial testing. These test methods were applied sequentially to the same lot of substrates. Epoxy cements were generally satisfactory with respect to separate tests, although sequential tests severely degraded epoxy bond strengths of all types. Bond strengths to unglazed substrates were slightly superior to those of the same components on glazed types. Solder joints were vulnerable to catastrophic failure in several environments, especially temperature cycling and thermal shock. Vibration and impact shock also produced solder joint failures.

Design and performance characteristics of the Vertical Temperature Profile Radiometer /VTPR/ for atmospheric temperature soundings.

Description of the design and operation of a radiometer which derives atmospheric temperature profiles on the basis of spectral measurements in eight optical filter channels. The radiometer achieves its eight-channel capability by sequentially viewing the eight optical filters mounted in a rotating filter wheel, with a single IR detector and electronic amplification channel processing the signal for all the filters. The advantages and disadvantages of this sequential approach as compared to eight 'parallel' radiometric channels are discussed. The proposed radiometer provides a relative calibration accuracy between seven out of the eight channels of better than 0.1% rms of the full dynamic range. The absolute accuracy achievable between in-flight calibrations of six minutes, or between two-hour calibrations using optical temperature correction factors, is better than an rms value of 0.15% of full scale. The radiometric correlation between the in-flight calibration source of the instrument and a reference standard blackbody is better than an rms value of 0.5% of full scale.

An unsupervised classification technique for multispectral remote sensing data.

Description of a two-part clustering technique consisting of (a) a sequential statistical clustering, which is essentially a sequential variance analysis, and (b) a generalized K-means clustering. In this composite clustering technique, the output of (a) is a set of initial clusters which are input to (b) for further improvement by an iterative scheme. This unsupervised composite technique was employed for automatic classification of two sets of remote multispectral earth resource observations. The classification accuracy by the unsupervised technique is found to be comparable to that by traditional supervised maximum-likelihood classification techniques.

J-adaptive estimation with estimated noise statistics

The J-adaptive sequential estimator is extended to include simultaneous estimation of the noise statistics in a model for system dynamics. This extension completely automates the estimator, eliminating the requirement of an analyst in the loop. Simulations in satellite orbit determination demonstrate the efficacy of the sequential estimation algorithm.

Mariner/Jupiter/Saturn navigation in the presence of massive planetary satellites

Orbit determination accuracies attainable during a Mariner/Jupiter/Saturn encounter have been established by means of covariance analyses. Advanced earth-based multistation radiometric data, optical data consisting of star/satellite pictures provided by a narrow-angle TV camera on board the spacecraft, and batch sequential filtering methods were employed. An evaluation of sequential filter sensitivities to errors in modeling small nongravitational spacecraft accelerations is presented. Selected covariances developed in the orbit determination analysis are used in an investigation of the trajectory correction costs associated with a close Ganymede encounter. The 99 percentile Delta V contours in the Ganymede aiming plane are obtained for satellite encounters before or after Jupiter closed approach, and the sources of the dominant contributions to the Delta V costs are identified.

Utilization of low-redundancy convolutional codes

This paper suggests guidelines for the utilization of low-redundancy convolutional codes with emphasis on providing a quick look capability (no decoding) and a moderate amount of coding gain. The performance and implementation complexity of threshold, Viterbi, and sequential decoding when used with low-redundancy, systematic, convolutional codes is discussed. An extensive list of optimum, short constraint length codes is found for use with Viterbi decoding, and several good, long constraint length codes are found for use with sequential decoding.

Square-root algorithm for evaluating mismodeled process noise

As the application of sequential filters has grown, the need has arisen to evaluate the sensitivity of these filters to mismodeling of the random process. A numerically reliable square-root algorithm is developed for calculating the covariances of estimates from a sequential filter which incorrectly models process noise. Mismodeling is restricted to the correlation time and standard deviation of a random process represented as a first-order Gauss-Markov sequence. Using a computer program which employs this algorithm, a sensitivity analysis was performed for several types of earth-based tracking data from an interplanetary spacecraft.

Video systems for real-time oil-spill detection

Three airborne television systems are being developed to evaluate techniques for oil-spill surveillance. These include a conventional TV camera, two cameras operating in a subtractive mode, and a field-sequential camera. False-color enhancement and wavelength and polarization filtering are also employed. The first of a series of flight tests indicates that an appropriately filtered conventional TV camera is a relatively inexpensive method of improving contrast between oil and water. False-color enhancement improves the contrast, but the problem caused by sun glint now limits the application to overcast days. Future effort will be aimed toward a one-camera system. Solving the sun-glint problem and developing the field-sequential camera into an operable system offers potential for color 'flagging' oil on water.

Computer experiments on periodic systems identification using rotor blade transient flapping-torsion responses at high advance ratio

Computer experiments are described which used transient responses in flap-bending and torsion of a rotor blade at high advance ratio. It was found that a simple system identification method applying a linear sequential estimator also called equation of motion estimator, is suitable for this periodic system and can be used directly, if only the acceleration data are noise-polluted. In the case where noise is also present in the state-variable data, the direct application of the estimator gave poor results. However after prefiltering the data with a digital Graham filter having a cutoff frequency above the natural blade torsion frequency, the linear sequential estimator successfully recovered the parameters of the periodic coefficient analytical model.

Some long, rate one-half, binary convolutional codes with an optimum distance profile and the systematic versus nonsystematic code question

A tabulation is given of long systematic and long quick-look-in (QLI) nonsystematic rate R = 1/2 binary convolutional codes with an optimum distance profile (ODP). These codes appear attractive for use with sequential decoders. Simulations for two of the new codes are reported and confirm Massey's conjecture that systematic and non-systematic codes of the same rate yield nearly identical computational and error probability performance with sequential decoding when the number of digits transmitted in the tail of the encoded frame is the same for both codes.

On the problem of embedding picture elements in regions

A few new algorithms for region growing in pictures were developed. These algorithms are a step toward finding a satisfactory solution to the image segmentation problem, and in-depth understanding of the problems of nonsemantic image segmentation. The algorithms utilize a sequential decision approach for region boundaries detection. The sequential decisions are supported by a stochastic algorithm that maintains local statistics of the region near the boundaries as the region grows. A few illustrations of the algorithm's performance are included.

Testability enhancement in digital system design

A new way of employing hardware redundancy to reduce the number of tests for fault detection in both combinational and synchronous sequential circuits is investigated. An approach is presented for utilizing systematic redundancy to simplify design work. Models for PLM (programmable logic module) and CMM (controllable memory module) are depicted. Systematic design and detection procedures are described. Using these procedures, an easily testable circuit (for stuck faults) can be designed. In contrast to the earlier results on fault detection in logic circuit, two tests are needed to detect any stuck faults of combinational logic circuit. Four tests are necessary and sufficient to detect any stuck faults of elementary logic gates and the malfunction of flip-flops of synchronous sequential circuit using Delay flip-flops or trigger flip-flops.

An algorithm for propagating the square-root covariance matrix in triangular form

A method for propagating the square root of the state error covariance matrix in lower triangular form is described. The algorithm can be combined with any triangular square-root measurement update algorithm to obtain a triangular square-root sequential estimation algorithm. The triangular square-root algorithm compares favorably with the conventional sequential estimation algorithm with regard to computation time.

Energy storage and deposition in a solar flare

X-ray pictures of a solar flare taken with the S-056 X-ray telescope aboard Skylab are interpreted in terms of flare energy deposition and storage. The close similarity between calculated magnetic-field lines and the overall structure of the X-ray core is shown to suggest that the flare occurred in an entire arcade of loops. It is found that different X-ray features brightened sequentially as the flare evolved, indicating that some triggering disturbance moved from one side to the other in the flare core. A propagation velocity of 180 to 280 km/s is computed, and it is proposed that the geometry of the loop arcade strongly influenced the propagation of the triggering disturbance as well as the storage and site of the subsequent energy deposition. Some possible physical causes for the sequential X-ray brightening are examined, and a magnetosonic wave is suggested as the triggering disturbance. 'Correct' conditions for energy release are considered
