System and Component Development of Particle-Based Pumped Thermal Energy Storage

Reliable power supply from variable renewable resources requires energy storage at various scales to overcome resource intermittency. Long-duration energy storage (LDES, 10-100 hours) can improve dispatchability and grid reliability with increasing levels of renewable power supply. Thermal energy storage (TES) has siting flexibility and the ability to store a large capacity of energy, and thus has the potential to meet the LDES need and provide charging and discharging durations beyond the economic capacity of conventional batteries. TES technology has evolved from concentrating solar thermal power (CSP) generation and is recognized as an economic large-scale energy storage method. A standalone electric-thermal energy storage system supporting renewable integration of wind and solar power without CSP solar field can firm renewable generation and boost overall grid resilience and security.

DEVAP-EDDR-TES (Simulation framework for a desiccant assisted air conditioning system with heat pump regeneration and energy storage) [SWR-24-66]

This software is a simulation framework that models a load flexible air conditioner system. The system consists of an evaporatively cooled liquid desiccant air conditioner (eLD-AC) subsystem, an electrically driven desiccant regenerator (EDDR) subsystem, and a stratified liquid desiccant storage (SLDS) subsystem. The software can be used to 1) predict the steady-state performance of the system given user-specified convergence criteria; 2) predict the dynamic performance of the entire system over a typical drive cycle operation subjected to user-specified building thermal loads and desired electrical load profile; 3) evaluate the synergy of all three subsystems operating altogether and improve the energy storage control strategy.

Mammalian complex III heme dynamics studied with pump-probe spectroscopy and red light illuminations

The electronic or molecular mechanisms which initiate photobiomodulation (PBM) in cells are not yet fully understood. Porcine complex III (C-III) of the electron transport chain was characterized with transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS). Then we applied our recently developed continuous wave laser coupled TAS procedure (CW-TAS) to investigate the effect of red light irradiances on the heme dynamics of C-III in its c 1 reduced state. The time constants associated with the axial ligand photodissociation were found to be 3.3 ± 0.3 ps for the oxidized state and 4.9 ± 0.4 ps for the c 1 reduced state. The analysis of the CW-TAS procedure yielded no significant changes in the C-III heme dynamics. We rule out the possibility of 635 nm CW light at 4.7 mW/cm 2 inducing a PBM effect on the heme dynamic of C-III, specifically with the photodissociation of its axial ligand.

Using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy to shed new light on complex materials

We know a lot about events that have occurred during the earth’s history, on timescales of millions of years. We are much less familiar with events that occur on “ultra”-short timescales of less than a billionth of a second. Unlike in geology, we can actually do experiments at ultrashort timescales, so we should be able to understand the “ultrafast” world much better! Ultrafast optical spectroscopy is the only technique capable of measuring processes at the fundamental time scales of electron, lattice and nuclear motion.

Use of Modern Tunnel Boring Machines for Underground Pumped Storage (CRADA 464)

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory initiated a Prize with support from Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Water Power Technologies Office (DOE WPTO) to encourage ideas to reduce the time to commissioning for PSH projects. As a result, nine finalists have been chosen to develop their concepts in advance of the FAST Prize Pitch Contest to be held on October 7, 2019. The National Labs will provide technical and business advisement to the noted FAST Prize finalists in preparation for this Pitch Contest.

Modeling and Optimizing Pumped Storage in a Multi-stage Large Scale Electricity Market under Portfolio Evolution

To leverage the fast-ramping capability of resources to provide great value to the grid, electricity system operators such as the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) continue to evolve their approaches for integrating energy storage resources, including pumpedstorage hydro (PSH), into the electricity markets. However, new challenges arise in modeling and optimizing these energy-limited resources across multiple market clearing processes and planning studies with uncertainties and imperfect information. For instance, current market practices of PSH owners specifying pumping/generating hours can result in sub-optimal generation dispatch. Letting grid operators optimize PSH with the consideration of multiple operating modes and energy limitation constraints can potentially bring economic benefits to both the system and the PSH owners. However, in multi-stage clearing process of electricity markets, utilizing the PSH flexibility to deal with realized uncertainties can cause deviation in the multi-stage scheduling processes. The resulting financial risks from the schedule deviation may not be acceptable to PSH owners. In addition, to effectively utilize this energy limited resource, the state of charge (SOC) constraints of PSH needs to be continuously optimized and the marginal cost of deviation need to reflect the expected cost to purchase or sell energy at future times to compensate for deviations. This project aims to develop a prototype enhanced PSH model and improved price signals in the multi-stage market clearing process with proper consideration of the unique characteristics of PSH, in order to better align underlying PSH capabilities with evolving grid needs, particularly including the needs for more frequent and larger cycling to manage variability and uncertainty from renewables.

Three-Photon Optical Pumping for Trapped Ion Quantum Computing

In this report we describe the testing of a novel scheme for state preparation of trapped ions in a quantum computing setup. This technique optimally would allow for similar precision and speed of state preparation while allowing for individual addressability of single ions in a chain using technology already available in a trapped ion experiment. As quantum computing experiments become more complicated, mid-experiment measurements will become necessary to achieve algorithms such as quantum error correction. Any mid-experiment measurement then requires the measured qubit to be re-prepared to a known quantum state. Currently this involves the protected qubits to be moved a sizeable distance away from the qubit being re-prepared which can be costly in terms of experiment length as well as introducing errors. Theoretical calculations predict that a three-photon process would allow for state preparation without qubit movement with similar efficiencies to current state preparation methods.
