Investigation of Contact Properties and Device Performance for Bifacial Double-Side Textured Silicon Solar Cells With Polysilicon Based Passivating Contacts

We investigate the impact of the surface morphology on the contact properties of phosphorus doped poly-Si layers. If the poly-Si layer on a textured surface remains intact after high-temperature metallization using a fire-through (FT) silver (Ag) paste, the J0,metal is not expected to increase significantly while the specific contact resistivity can improve with a textured surface. The contact properties of the FT Ag contacts to n+ poly-Si deposited on both textured and planar surfaces are investigated by measuring and evaluating ρc and J0,metal. The reasons for differences in contact resistance and recombination are further investigated with SEM imaging. Solar cells with n-type polysilicon based passivating contacts on the rear side are fabricated and characterized. The scientific approach used, and the insights presented in this work, help to understand the mechanisms and behavior of screen-printed and fired-through contacts to polysilicon layers deposited onto textured silicon surfaces.

Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Stream chemistry for core sites in Gwynns Falls

In the Baltimore urban long-term ecological research (LTER) project, (Baltimore Ecosystem Study, BES) we use the watershed approach to evaluate integrated ecosystem function. The LTER research is centered on the Gwynns Falls watershed, a 17,150 ha catchment that traverses a gradient from the urban core of Baltimore, through older urban residential (1900 - 1950) and suburban (1950- 1980) zones, rapidly suburbanizing areas and a rural/suburban fringe. Our long-term sampling network includes four longitudinal sampling sites along the Gwynns Falls as well as several small (40 - 100 ha) watersheds located within or near to the Gwynns Falls. The longitudinal sites provide data on water and nutrient fluxes in the different land use zones of the watershed (rural/suburban, rapidly suburbanizing, old suburban, urban core) and the small watersheds provide more focused data on specific land use areas (forest, agriculture, rural/suburban, urban). Each of the gaging sites is continuously monitored for discharge and is sampled weekly for chemistry. Additional chemical sampling is carried out in a supplemental set of sites to provide a greater range of land use. Weekly analyses includes nitrate, phosphate, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chloride and sulfate, turbidity, fecal coliforms, temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH. Cations, dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen and metals are measured on selected samples. Streamflow data for this site are posted at: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/md/nwis/nwisman?site_no=015835701

Algae Biofilm Produced from Anaerobic Digester Wastewater Demonstrated as Biofertilizer for Dwarf Wheat

Aims: To correlate yield of dwarf wheat fertilized with algae biofilm produced using anaerobic digester effluent (digestate) from a municipal water resource recovery facility as nutrient source and compare with yield using non-algae biofilm based fertilizers and a negative control. Study Design: Greenhouse testing for measurement of biomass yields and statistical analysis of wheat yield data results. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Biological Engineering Algae Processing and Products Facility greenhouse between March and June, 2024. Methodology: Yield of a dwarf cultivar of red spring wheat was measured as a function of four treatments including three fertilizers and a negative control: (1) algae biofilm cultivated on anaerobic digester effluent, (2) positive control of Osmocote commercial slow release fertilizer, (3) anaerobic digester biosolids, and (4) negative control with no fertilizer addition. Results: Average yield values (gm) for the four treatments were: (1) 1.25, (2) 0.99, (3) 0.72, and (4) 0.52, respectively. Algae biofilm fertilizer performed significantly better than Osmocote with P = .002, anaerobic digester biosolids with P = .05, and no fertilizer addition with P = .05. Struvite, a slow release fertilizer, was observed to be associated with the algae biofilm as a precipitate of the high concentrations of nutrients within the anaerobic digester water. Struvite (MgNH4PO46H2O) releases plant available nitrogen and phosphorus over time and is biologically precipitated due to the increase in solution pH as a result of photosynthesis by the algae biofilm. Conclusion: Algae biofilm cultivated on anaerobic digester wastewater can serve as a biofertilizer for recycling nutrients within the biosphere for sustainable nutrient management.

Lateral PNP bipolar transistor with aiding field diffusions

Fabrication technique produces field aided lateral PNP transistors compatible with micropower switching circuits. The sub-collector diffusion is performed with phosphorus as the dopant and the epitaxy is grown using the higher temperature silicon tetrachloride process.

Improved silicon solar cells

Redistribution of phosphorus within the n-type layers of n-on-p silicon solar cells results in significant improvements in cell performance. Electrical current output is increased, reduction in current output due to radiation damage is lessened, and very shallow junctions are no longer needed.
