Multiscale Analysis of Thermo-Mechanical Behavior of Boron Nitride-Reinforced Epoxy Nanocomposites

The effect of size, shape, morphology, and arrangement of micro constituents of Boron Nitrite (BN) nanoplatelet/epoxy composites on their properties were investigated using a multi scale approach that includes Molecular Dynamics (MD) and micromechanics. The thermo-mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated using molecular theory and the analysis showed that the elastic constants of BN/epoxy composites were not severely affected by temperature. Also, the micromechanical analysis of Generalized Method of Cells (GMC) was utilized at higher length scale to evaluate elastic properties of the composites, for different geometries and arrangements of micro constituents. The predicted results of the analysis showed that the size, aspect ratios, morphology, and the arrangements of inclusions in BN/epoxy nanocomposites all have remarkable effect on the mechanical performances of the material systems.

Wear and Neutron Shielding Resilience of Titanium-Hexagonal Boron Nitride Coatings Against Extreme Lunar Radiation and Thermal Cycles

Ti6Al4V and Al6061 are aerospace alloys used in lunar structural components and rovers owing to their high specific strength. However, they deteriorate rapidly when subjected to demanding conditions of the lunar environment, such as extreme thermal cycles, solar particle radiation, and abrasive regolith. Cryo-milled powders were employed to deposit hBN-reinforced protective titanium coatings through plasma spray (atmospheric APS and vacuum-VPS) with 2 and 10 vol% of hBN on Ti6Al4V and Al6061 substrates. These coatings were evaluated for durability under extreme lunar-like conditions, including thermal cycling, electron radiation, and synergistic (electron radiation-thermal cycle) exposure. The coatings exhibited radiation-induced hardening, resulting in a substantial increase in their microhardness ~20–40% compared to virgin condition. Bright-field transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis reveals the presence of high dislocation densities, black dot defects, and dislocation clusters, providing evidence of the severe impact of synergistic environmental stresses. Ball-on-disk tribological tests were conducted in the presence of JSC-1 A lunar regolith simulant to evaluate the wear performance of coatings. Compared to conventional Ti6Al4V substrate, 50%, 90%, and 70% reductions in wear volume were observed in the Ti/2 vol% hBN coatings in thermal-only, radiation-only, and synergistic environments. Neutron shielding tests indicate that the synergistic coatings offer higher neutron shielding performance by up to 28% compared to virgin coatings, attributed to improved neutron capture by 10B isotopes. Upon a comprehensive assessment and ranking of multiple coatings under varying conditions, the VPS Ti/2 vol% hBN coating emerges as the top choice for protection against extreme radiation and thermal cycles for future lunar explorations.

In Situ Study of Resistive Switching in a Nitride‐Based Memristive Device

Abstract Resistive switching (RS) devices with ultra‐low‐voltage threshold and reliable switching repeatability exhibits great potential applications in energy‐efficient data storage and neuromorphic computing. Understanding switching mechanisms at nanoscale is critical to design RS devices with improved performance. In this work, a lamella memristive device using focused ion beam (FIB) method based on the metal/TiO x /TiN/Si structure device is fabricated. In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and current–voltage ( I–V ) characteristic demonstrate that the lamella device shows a volatile RS behavior with a threshold switching at ≈ ± 0.4 V. In situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) experiments with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) reveal that the charge carriers such as oxygen vacancies migrate under positive/negative DC bias and modulate Schottky barriers at the top and bottom metal/semiconductor interfaces. The RS mechanism of the lamella device is based on the Schottky barriers modulation and Joule heating assisted electric field triggered thermal runaway (FTTR) occurred at the metal/semiconductor interfaces. The fundamental insights gained from this study presents a perspective on interface‐type RS devices processing and opens up new technological opportunities of fabricating ultra‐low‐energy memristive devices.

Bio‐Inspired Cascade Photocatalysis on Fe Single‐Atom Carbon Nitride Upcycles Plastic Wastes for Effective Acetic Acid Production

Plastic imposes a critical threat to the environment, ecosystems, and human health because of the low utilization efficiency of plastics. Here, we demonstrate a sustainable, highly efficient cascade photocatalysis for upcycle plastics to value-added acetic acid using Fe single-atom catalysts (Fe@C 3 N 4 SAC) at ambient conditions. Inspired by Phanerochaete chrysosporium microbial, the defective Fe@C 3 N 4 SAC acts as a bifunctional cascade photocatalyst for both Fenton-like and CO 2 reduction reactions. During the reaction, hydroxyl radicals (*OH) form and subsequently oxidize plastics into CO 2 intermediates. These CO 2 intermediates are then photo-reduced to CH 3 COOH on the same catalyst via cascade photocatalysis. The mechanism is confirmed by in situ multimodal microscopy and spectroscopies, with density functional theory calculations. A state-of-art CH 3 COOH yield of 63.8 mg h −1 gcat −1 from PVC, 12.7 mg h −1 gcat −1 from PE, 5.4 mg h −1 gcat −1 from PET, and 5.3 mg h −1 gcat −1 from PP are directly obtained under AM1.5G solar irradiation and further validated under real sunlight (≈0.6 sun), achieving 5.6 mg h −1 gcat −1 from PET, using low-cost Fe@C 3 N 4 SAC in a sealed reactor by enhancing the photon transport and utilization efficiency. The techno-economic analysis shows it is promising to practically mitigate plastic based on broader social welfare assessments.
