Detection of gamma-ray lines from the direction of the Crab Nebula

The Crab Nebula and its associated pulsar NP0531+21 were observed during a balloon flight of the Durham MK1 high resolution spectrometer on June 6, 1981. The data indicate two significant line features of energies of 404.7 and 1049.8 keV with intensities of (7.2 + or - 2.1) x 0.001 and (12.0 + or - 0.5) x 0.01/5. After subtracting instrumental resolution, the widths of these lines were determined to be (3.5 + or - 1.4) keV and (6.3 + or - 1.6) keV at 404.7 and 1049.8 keV respectively. A third line at 78.8 keV was detected as a transient event with a peak intensity of (1.1 + or - 0.3) x 0.01 photons sq cm/s and a width 1.5 keV. It is shown that all three line features are consistent with a point source located at the Crab.

The 4He1H ratios in the chemical compositions of solar flare particles and the primordial solar nebula

The chemical abundances of solar flare particles are similar to those of galactic cosmic rays at their sources. In order to infer the 4He/1H ratio in the solar atmosphere, this ratio as observed in the interstellar gases was considered in addition to those which were contained of galactic cosmic rays and the stars classified as the early types. Since it is clear that the most of these ratios ever deduced for both of the Sun and solar flare particles are lower than those for the interstellar gases, this ratio suggests that hydrogens are relatively overabundant in the chemical abundances of the Sun and the primordial solar nebula as compared to those of the interstellar gases currently observed.

The ionization structure of planetary nebulae. Part 4: NGC 7662

Spectrophotometric observations of emission-line intensities over the spectral range 1400 to 7200 A were made in five positions in the planetary nebula NGC 7662. Standard equations used to correct for the existence of elements in other than the optically observable ionization stages show a consistent and approximate agreement with abundances calculated using ultraviolet lines. The abundances of C and N indicate that some mixing of CNO-processed material into the nebular shell may have occurred in NGC 7662; the low He abundance, however, indicates that little or no He enrichment occurred. The Ar, Ne, and O and S abundances appear to be low. It is suggested that the progenitor to NGC 7662 may have formed out of somewhat metal-poor material.

Some properties of the filamentary nebula at 1723 - 46

High resolution spectra of the interstellar NaI D2 absorption line have been obtained for seven B-type stars aligned with an extensive filamentary nebula. Very fine filaments have now been found on a high contrast print of a deep H-alpha and forbidden N II plate, making identification as a fossilized remnant probable but uncertain. The inferred age is about 20,000 yr, the distance less than 200 pc, the diameter less than 17.5 pec, but the initial energy is only about 2 x 10 to the 47th erg.

The reflection nebula NGC 1999

The properties of dust particles in regions of recent star formation often seem to be different from the 'average galactic' dust properties. The present investigation is concerned with a determination of the ratio of nebular intensity to the stellar flux for the system NGC 1999/V380 Ori in the ultraviolet. It is found that the stellar flux curve in the ultraviolet agrees surprisingly well with the corresponding curve for the system NGC 7023/HD 200775. This is at least compatible with the assumption that the dust properties in NGC 1999, as well as the basic geometric structure of the reflection nebula, are very similar to those in NGC 7023.

Evolution of grains in a turbulent solar nebula

In the present computation of the evolution of grain size distribution in a turbulent disk for turbulent solar nebula models, using realistic collisional outcomes and strengths of grain aggregates, the half space above the central plane of the disk is divided into a series of levels. At each level, the size distribution is represented by the population of a series of discrete size bins, each spanning an order of magnitude in mass. Coagulation, erosion, or disruption, occur for various combinations of relative particle sizes and velocities, together with assumed material strength, based on experimental impact data. The calculation is one-dimensional, in that it is performed at a single radial location in the disk.

Wind distances for planetary nebulae

A new method for the determination of distances to planetary nebulae is presented. If a star has a strong wind that produces a P Cygni profile in its spectrum, an escape velocity may be inferred from the terminal velocity, which provides a relation involving stellar temperature, luminosity, and mass. The theory of stellar evolution provides a second relation among these three variables, so that once the star's temperature is known, it is possible to simultaneously derive its mass and luminosity, and hence its distance. The method is applied to several test cases that illustrate its viability and current limitations.

A shadowed flow in the stem of the Crab nebula?

The faint radio and emission line 'jet' outward from the northern boundary of the Crab Nebula which appears as a neat right cylinder is modelled here as the convected margin of a gas cloud that accidentially cast its shallow across the nearly ballistic flow of the stellar envelope ejected in the supernova explosion. It is shown that this model is consistent with known data on the jet, and that it accounts for the strikingly regular geometrical features in a natural way. In contrast, flow instability models do not easily result in so neat a cylinder.

Orbital resonances in the solar nebula - Implications for planetary accretion

The influence of gas drag and gravitational perturbations by a planetary embryo on the orbit of a planetesimal in the solar nebula was examined. Non-Keplerian rotation of the gas causes secular decay of the orbit. If the planetesimal's orbit is exterior to the perturber's, resonant perturbations oppose this drag and can cause it to be trapped in a stable orbit at a commensurability of order j/(j + 1), where j is an integer. Numerical and analytical demonstrations show that resonant trapping occurs for wide ranges of perturbing mass, planetesimal size, and j. Induced eccentricities are large, causing overlap of orbits for bodies in different resonances with j greater than 2. Collisions between planetesimals in different resonances, or between resonant and nonresonant bodies, result in their disruption. Fragments smaller than a critical size can pass through resonances under the influence of drag and be accreted by the embryo. This effect speeds accretion and tends to prevent dynamical isolation of planetary embryos, making gas-rich scenarios for planetary formation more plausible.

The ultraviolet spectrum of the planetary nebula M3-27

The planetary nebula M3-27 was observed in the low-dispersion mode of the IUE satellite in the region 1150 A-3200 A. A fairly strong continuum was seen to extend down to 1150 A, superposed with a relatively small number of emission lines. A high electron density is inferred from forbidden O III but regions of lower density also exist. The ultraviolet characteristics of M3-27 are compared to those of M1-2. A carbon abundance of log C = 7.72 was estimated from the semiforbidden C III nebular line for an adopted Te = 15,000 K; no emission lines of C IV 1549 A, C II 2326 A, or He II 1640 A were detected. Based on the UV observations, M3-27 would be classified as of slightly lower excitation class than M1-2 or IC 4997.

Spectrum and chemical composition of the remarkable planetary nebula NGC 6537

The planetary nebula NGC 6537 appears to be an irregular bipolar object. Conventional procedures have been employed to observe the spectrum of NGC 6537 with the image dissector scanner at the Lick 3-m telescope. Both red- and green-sensitive tubes were employed in order to cover the spectrum from the practical UV limit near lambda 3300 A to the near-infrared limit near lambda 8600 A. The instrumental response function was determined on the basis of the observation of suitable comparison stars. On Oct. 23, 1984, observations with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) were obtained. A table containing the optical region spectrum of NGC 6537 is presented along with a table providing the UV fluxes, a table listing the ionic concentrations, and a table with data describing the chemical composition of NGC 6537. Attention is given to theoretical models and the determination of the nebular chemical composition, and aspects of plasma diagnostics.

Spectral characteristics of dust in planetary nebulae

Some carbon-rich planetary nebulae exhibit a strong broad emission feature beginning at Lambda which is approximately 24 microns and extending to Lambda greater than 30 microns. Thirty to 55 micron spectrophotometry of Ic 418 and NGC 6572, both of which have the strong broad emission feature, allow the wavelength dependence of the emissivity of the dust responsible for the feature to be defined. Comparison with laboratory spectra of candidate materials which are likely to condense in a carbon-rich environment suggests that the feature arises from MgS. The implications of such a strong feature arising from a relatively minor dust constituent are discussed. The environment in which MgS may be found is considered. It is speculated that MgS will be seen in objects with C/O ratios only slightly greater than one, but not in extremely carbon rich objects. In objects with much higher carbon abundances, the formation of CS consumes S so that insufficient MgS can form to exhibit the strong feature. These observations imply that the emergent far infrared spectrum of carbon-rich objects are very different depending on the abundance of the low temperature condensate MgS.

Meteoritic constraints on processes in the solar nebula

The origin of chondritic meteorites is discussed. The characteristics of the chondrite subtypes are shown, and the fine structure of chondrites is described in terms of the three principal categories of aggregated objects present in chondrites: chondrules, Ca,Al-rich inclusions (CAIs), and matrix. Four possibilities for the origin of these components are considered, leading to four important constraints on the chondrite-forming processes, based on mineralogy and astrophysics. It is concluded that the chondrules and CAIs were formed in the solar nebula at a radial distance of about 3 AU. Some type of transient high-energy event or process, operating in zones of dust enrichment, furnished the high temperatures needed to process the chondrules and CAIs. These objects cooled on a time scale of minutes, then on a similarly short time scale began to aggregate, together with dust, into chondritic masses having approximately the solar proportions of major condensable elements.

Ultraviolet spectra of the central stars of large planetary nebulae

The ultraviolet spectra of 32 planetary nebula nuclei have been examined with the IUE. Ultraviolet and UV-to-optical flux ratios are derived, from which color temperatures are derived. The distribution of the latter ranges from rough agreement with the Zanstra temperatures upward to infinite values. The high-luminosity stars have generally lower, determinable color temperatures; the infinite or indeterminable color temperatures are contained by the set of lower luminosity stars. About half the stars exhibit a mixture of line features, most commonly He II 1640 A and C IV 1550 A in emission or absorption. Three display clear P Cygni lines, while a fourth appears to display a remarkably broad C IV 1550 A P Cygni profile. The other half of the stars have no perceptible line features.

Spatially extended 10 micron emission from the infrared reflection nebula GSS30

A surface brightness map and point-wise photometry at 10 microns of the infrared reflection nebula GSS30 were made with the Wyoming 2.3-m telescope. Extended emission is detected as far as 10 arcsec north of the illuminating star, IRS1. The photometry shows that the nebular surface brightness is a factor of three more than that expected from thermal emission from dust grains. If the 10 micron flux is due to scattering, then grains with a radius of 1.6 microns are required. Alternatively, the 10 micron flux is consistent with the flux expected from the unidentified IR emission features at 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 microns.

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the Crab Nebula and the oxygen abundance of the interstellar medium

The measurement and analysis of a high-resolution soft X-ray spectrum of the Crab Nebula obtained with the Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory are reported. A hydrogen column density of 3.45 + or - 0.42 x 10 to the 21st/sq cm and an oxygen column density of 2.78 + or - 0.55 x 10 to the 18th/sq cm, corresponding to an oxygen abundance of 1.1 + or - 0.3 times solar, were obtained. The absence of any evident oxygen depletion effects suggests that most interstellar grains are reasonably transparent to soft X-rays, implying sizes of less than 0.4 micron. The detailed spectrum in the vicinity of the oxygen edge gives marginal evidence for a resonant absorption line and suggests an edge from singly ionized oxygen.

Evidence for successive episodes of condensation at high temperature in a part of the solar nebula

A polished thin section of a Ca-Al-rich inclusion CAI 3643 from the Allende meteorite has been studied by means of light and scanning electron microscopes, and electron and proton microprobes. The appearance and the mineral composition of the inclusion's three concentric layers: core, mantle, and crust are described. Despite differences in texture and composition, the three layers display a continuity in their modal mineralogical compositions, their extreme Al2O3 enrichments (53-69 percent, compared to 25-45 percent in other CAIs), and their trace element complementarity. This implies that all the layers of CAI 3643 have formed from the same cooling gaseous reservoir within a limited interval of time and space, consistent with an origin in a local transient heating event in the CV chondrite formation region of the nebula.
