Fuzzy efficiency optimization of AC induction motors

This paper describes the early states of work to implement a fuzzy logic controller to optimize the efficiency of AC induction motor/adjustable speed drive (ASD) systems running at less than optimal speed and torque conditions. In this paper, the process by which the membership functions of the controller were tuned is discussed and a controller which operates on frequency as well as voltage is proposed. The membership functions for this dual-variable controller are sketched. Additional topics include an approach for fuzzy logic to motor current control which can be used with vector-controlled drives. Incorporation of a fuzzy controller as an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) microchip is planned.

Evolving fuzzy rules in a learning classifier system

The fuzzy classifier system (FCS) combines the ideas of fuzzy logic controllers (FLC's) and learning classifier systems (LCS's). It brings together the expressive powers of fuzzy logic as it has been applied in fuzzy controllers to express relations between continuous variables, and the ability of LCS's to evolve co-adapted sets of rules. The goal of the FCS is to develop a rule-based system capable of learning in a reinforcement regime, and that can potentially be used for process control.

Improvement on fuzzy controller design techniques

This paper addresses three main issues, which are somewhat interrelated. The first issue deals with the classification or types of fuzzy controllers. Careful examination of the fuzzy controllers designed by various engineers reveals distinctive classes of fuzzy controllers. Classification is believed to be helpful from different perspectives. The second issue deals with the design according to specifications, experiments related to the tuning of fuzzy controllers, according to the specification, will be discussed. General design procedure, hopefully, can be outlined in order to ease the burden of a design engineer. The third issue deals with the simplicity and limitation of the rule-based IF-THEN logical statements. The methodology of fuzzy-constraint network is proposed here as an alternative to the design practice at present. It is our belief that predicate calculus and the first order logic possess much more expressive power.

Field programmable gate arrays: Evaluation report for space-flight application

Field Programmable Gate Arrays commonly called FPGA's are the newer generation of field programmable devices and offer more flexibility in the logic modules they incorporate and in how they are interconnected. The flexibility, the number of logic building blocks available, and the high gate densities achievable are why users find FPGA's attractive. These attributes are important in reducing product development costs and shortening the development cycle. The aerospace community is interested in incorporating this new generation of field programmable technology in space applications. To this end, a consortium was formed to evaluate the quality, reliability, and radiation performance of FPGA's. This report presents the test results on FPGA parts provided by ACTEL Corporation.

Strongly transitive fuzzy relations: A more adequate way to describe similarity

The notion of a transitive closure of a fuzzy relation is very useful for clustering in pattern recognition, for fuzzy databases, etc. It is based on translating the standard definition of transitivity and transitive closure into fuzzy terms. This definition works fine, but to some extent it does not fully capture our understanding of transitivity. The reason is that this definition is based on fuzzifying only the positive side of transitivity: if R(a,b) and R(b,c), then R(a,c); but transitivity also includes a negative side: if R(a,b) and not R(a,c), then not R(b,c). In classical logic, this negative statement follows from the standard 'positive' definition of transitivity. In fuzzy logic, this negative part of the transitivity has to be formulated as an additional demand. A strongly transitive fuzzy relation as the one that satisfies both the positive and the negative transitivity demands is defined, the existence of strongly transitive closure is proven, and the relationship between strongly transitive similarity and clustering are found.

Knowledge-based control for robot self-localization

Autonomous robot systems are being proposed for a variety of missions including the Mars rover/sample return mission. Prior to any other mission objectives being met, an autonomous robot must be able to determine its own location. This will be especially challenging because location sensors like GPS, which are available on Earth, will not be useful, nor will INS sensors because their drift is too large. Another approach to self-localization is required. In this paper, we describe a novel approach to localization by applying a problem solving methodology. The term 'problem solving' implies a computational technique based on logical representational and control steps. In this research, these steps are derived from observing experts solving localization problems. The objective is not specifically to simulate human expertise but rather to apply its techniques where appropriate for computational systems. In doing this, we describe a model for solving the problem and a system built on that model, called localization control and logic expert (LOCALE), which is a demonstration of concept for the approach and the model. The results of this work represent the first successful solution to high-level control aspects of the localization problem.

An autonomous satellite architecture integrating deliberative reasoning and behavioural intelligence

This paper describes a method for the design of autonomous spacecraft, based upon behavioral approaches to intelligent robotics. First, a number of previous spacecraft automation projects are reviewed. A methodology for the design of autonomous spacecraft is then presented, drawing upon both the European Space Agency technological center (ESTEC) automation and robotics methodology and the subsumption architecture for autonomous robots. A layered competency model for autonomous orbital spacecraft is proposed. A simple example of low level competencies and their interaction is presented in order to illustrate the methodology. Finally, the general principles adopted for the control hardware design of the AUSTRALIS-1 spacecraft are described. This system will provide an orbital experimental platform for spacecraft autonomy studies, supporting the exploration of different logical control models, different computational metaphors within the behavioral control framework, and different mappings from the logical control model to its physical implementation.

A composite self tuning strategy for fuzzy control of dynamic systems

The feature of self learning makes fuzzy logic controllers attractive in control applications. This paper proposes a strategy to tune the fuzzy logic controller on-line by tuning the data base as well as the rule base. The structure of the controller is outlined and preliminary results are presented using simulation studies.

Intelligent fuzzy controller for event-driven real time systems

Most of the known linguistic models are essentially static, that is, time is not a parameter in describing the behavior of the object's model. In this paper we show a model for synchronous finite state machines based on fuzzy logic. Such finite state machines can be used to build both event-driven, time-varying, rule-based systems and the control unit section of a fuzzy logic computer. The architecture of a pipelined intelligent fuzzy controller is presented, and the linguistic model is represented by an overall fuzzy relation stored in a single rule memory. A VLSI integrated circuit implementation of the fuzzy controller is suggested. At a clock rate of 30 MHz, the controller can perform 3 MFLIPS on multi-dimensional fuzzy data.

Self-checking sequential circuit design using m-out-of-n codes

A technique for designing sequential circuits which are totally self-checking for single stuck at faults is presented. This technique uses m-out-of-n codes for state assignments and for output encoding. The next stage logic and the output logic are implemented such that any stuck-at-fault will either create a single bit error or unidirectional multibit error at the output. The technique has been applied to MCNC benchmark circuits and the overhead is estimated.

Contact-impact analysis of deployable space systems

This paper presents simulation results of a flexible, deployable space system with multiple contact-impact events, using three different modeling approaches. In the first two approaches, the equations of motion of the system are written in terms of generalized coordinates of each component, with modal coordinates used to account for flexibility in the components. Two different methods are used to model contact-impact events in the systems. In the momentum balance method, as contact-impact occurs, momentum equations of the systems are solved for the jump discontinuity in velocity of generalized coordinates. Integration of the system is restarted with the new initial conditions from solutions of momentum equations. In the logical function method, a virtual spring connecting the two contact points is assumed. The virtual spring is active only when impact occurs. No special treatment is needed in the integration algorithm using this method. In the third approach, instead of using modal coordinates, a finite element based formulation for the transient dynamics of mechanical system is used to model flexibility of the components. The logical function method is used to model contact-impact in the third approach.

Dynamic performance of an aero-assist spacecraft - AFE

Dynamic performance of the Aero-assist Flight Experiment (AFE) spacecraft was investigated using a high-fidelity 6-DOF simulation model. Baseline guidance logic, control logic, and a strapdown navigation system to be used on the AFE spacecraft are also modeled in the 6-DOF simulation. During the AFE mission, uncertainties in the environment and the spacecraft are described by an error space which includes both correlated and uncorrelated error sources. The principal error sources modeled in this study include navigation errors, initial state vector errors, atmospheric variations, aerodynamic uncertainties, center-of-gravity off-sets, and weight uncertainties. The impact of the perturbations on the spacecraft performance is investigated using Monte Carlo repetitive statistical techniques. During the Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) deorbit phase, a target flight path angle of -4.76 deg at entry interface (EI) offers very high probability of avoiding SRM casing skip-out from the atmosphere. Generally speaking, the baseline designs of the guidance, navigation, and control systems satisfy most of the science and mission requirements.

Torsion in box wings

Logical analysis of a box wing necessitates the allowance for the contribution of the drag spars to the torsional strength of the structure. A rigorous analysis is available in the use of the Method of Least Work. The best logical method of analysis is that applying Prandtl's Membrane Analogy. The results so obtained vary by a negligible amount from those obtained by the rigorous method.

PLA realizations for VLSI state machines

A major problem associated with state assignment procedures for VLSI controllers is obtaining an assignment that produces minimal or near minimal logic. The key item in Programmable Logic Array (PLA) area minimization is the number of unique product terms required by the design equations. This paper presents a state assignment algorithm for minimizing the number of product terms required to implement a finite state machine using a PLA. Partition algebra with predecessor state information is used to derive a near optimal state assignment. A maximum bound on the number of product terms required can be obtained by inspecting the predecessor state information. The state assignment algorithm presented is much simpler than existing procedures and leads to the same number of product terms or less. An area-efficient PLA structure implemented in a 1.0 micron CMOS process is presented along with a summary of the performance for a controller implemented using this design procedure.
