Recent gravitational wave observations of neutron-star-neutron-star and neutron-star-black-hole binaries appear to indicate that massive neutron stars may not be too uncommon in merging systems. These discoveries have led to an increased interest in the simulation of merging compact binaries involving massive stars. In this paper, we present a first set of evolution of massive neutron star binaries using Monte Carlo radiation transport for the evolution of neutrinos. Here, we study a range of systems, from nearly symmetric binaries that collapse to a black hole before forming a disk or ejecting material, to more asymmetric binaries in which tidal disruption of the lower mass star leads to the production of more interesting postmerger remnants. For the latter type of systems, we additionally study the impact of viscosity on the properties of the outflows, and compare our results to two recent simulations of identical binaries performed with the whiskyTHC code. We find agreement on the black hole properties, disk mass, and mass and velocity of the outflows within expected numerical uncertainties, and some minor but noticeable differences in the evolution of the electron fraction when using a subgrid viscosity model, with viscosity playing a more minor role in our simulations. The method used to account for r-process heating in the determination of the outflow properties appears to have a larger impact on our result than those differences between numerical codes. We also use the simulation with the most ejected material to verify that our newly implemented Lagrangian tracers provide a reasonable sampling of the matter outflows as they leave the computational grid. We note that, given the lack of production of hot outflows in these mergers, the main role of neutrinos in these systems is to set the composition of the postmerger remnant. One of the main potential uses of our simulations is, thus, as improved initial conditions for longer evolutions of such remnants.

We present a methodology to streamline implementation of massive-quark radiative contributions in calculations with a variable number of active partons in proton-proton collisions. The methodology introduces subtraction and residual heavy-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) to implement calculations in the Aivazis–Collins–Olness–Tung (ACOT) factorization scheme and its simplified realization in various processes up to the next-to-the-next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling strength. Interpolation tables for bottom-quark subtraction and residual distributions for CT18 NLO and NNLO PDF ensembles are provided in the common LHAPDF6 format. A numerical calculation of 𝑍-boson production with at least one 𝑏 jet at the Large Hadron Collider beyond the lowest order in QCD is considered for illustration purposes.
M-theory frozen singularities are (locally) D - or E -type orbifold singularities with a background fractional C 3 -monodromy surrounding them. In this paper, we revisit such backgrounds and address several puzzling features of their physics. We first give a top-down derivation of how the D - or E -type 7D N = 1 gauge theory directly “freezes” to a lower-rank gauge theory due to the C 3 background. This relies on a Hanany-Witten effect of fractional M5 branes and the presence of a gauge anomaly of fractional D p probes in the circle reduction. Additionally, we compute defect groups and 8D symmetry topological field theories of the 7D frozen theories in several duality frames. We apply our results to understanding the evenness condition of strings ending on O 7 + planes, and calculating the global forms of supergravity gauge groups of M-theory compactified on T 4 / Γ with frozen singularities. We also revisit IIA A D E singularities with a C 1 -monodromy along a 1-cycle in the boundary lens space and show that this freezes the gauge degrees of freedom via confinement. In this work, we show how the index of the fermion operator from the Euclidean action can be used to uncover the existence of gapless modes living on defects (such as edges and vortices) in topological insulators and superconductors. The 1-loop Feynman diagram that computes the index reveals an analog of the quantum Hall current flowing on and off the defect—even in systems without conserved currents or chiral anomalies—and makes explicit the interplay between topology in momentum and coordinate space. We provide several explicit examples.
In this work, we propose a new theory of second-order viscous relativistic hydrodynamics which does not impose any frame conditions on the choice of the hydrodynamic variables. It differs from Mueller-Israel-Stewart theory by including additional transient degrees of freedom, and its first-order truncation reduces to Bemfica-Disconzi-Noronha-Kovtun theory. Conditions for causality and stability are explicitly given in the conformal regime. As an illustrative example, we consider Bjorken flow solutions to our equations and identify variables which make a hydrodynamic attractor manifest.
