Studies in the Fields of Space Flight and Guidance Theory: Progress Report - No. 2

Compiled in this paper are 11 progress papers from 7 of the agencies working under contract to MSFC in the areas of guidance theory and space flight theory. This is the second paper of the "Progress Reports" and covers the period from December 1, 1961 to June 15, 1962. Extensive references are made to "Progress Report No. 1." This second progress report is referred to as "report" and "Progress Report No. 1" will be referred to as the "first report" in this introduction. Information given in the first report is not repeated herein. The reports of the various contractors will be referred to by index number as papers. There are two parallel series of publications covering the over-all activities at MSFC in the areas of guidance theory and space flight theory. One is the series of progress reports of which this paper is the second in the series. The other is the series of "Status Reports on Theory of Space Flight and Adaptive Guidance." These series along with a few other special reports, give a complete picture of the immediate objectives, accomplishments, and final goals of Aeroballistics Division and associated contr

Experimental and theoretical study of flow fields surrounding boattail nozzles at subsonic speeds

An investigation has been conducted to determine the effects of jet exhaust on the subsonic flow surrounding boattail nozzles with and without separated boundary layers. Measurements of local Mach number and flow angle were made at free-stream Mach numbers of 0.60 and 0.80. Jet exhaust flow was simulated with a solid sting and with high-pressure air at jet total pressure ratios of 3 and 5. The results show that there are strong effects of the wave structure of the jet on the external flow field. The local Mach numbers and flow angles for the models with solid sting jet simulators were in good agreement with subsonic inviscid/viscous flow theory. The theoretical method does not, however, adequately predict the flow about the models with high-pressure air jets.

On the interaction of a sound pulse with the shear layer of an axisymmetric jet. II - Heated jets

The fluctuating field of a heated jet excited by a sound pulse is simulated numerically. The fluctuations in both the flow field and the far field are studied. The flow field results depend crucially on the stability properties of the heated jet. The altered stability properties due to the heating cause a reduction in the overall fluctuations and a shift of the instability waves into lower frequencies. These changes cause a similar downward shift in the far field spectrum and a reduction in the total far field noise. The results provide a partial explanation in terms of stability theory of experimentally observed properties of the noise of heated jets.

Empirical orthogonal functions and normal modes

An attempt to provide physical insight into the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) representation of data fields by the study of fields generated by linear stochastic models is presented in this paper. In a large class of these models, the EOFs at individual Fourier frequencies coincide with the orthogonal mechanical modes of the system - provided they exist. The precise mathematical criteria for this coincidence are derived and a physical interpretation is provided. A scheme possibly useful in forecasting is formally constructed for representing any stochastic field by a linear Hermitian model forced by noise.
