The site is part of Turkey Point Environmental Observatory (TPEO). The establishment of the agricultural site has allowed TPEO to become representative of the major biomes in the Great Lakes region, encompassing coniferous and deciduous forests, as well as agricultural crops. The soil at this agricultural site is well-drained fine sandy loam. The area has a humid continental climate and has one of the longest-growing seasons in Canada with at least 150–160 frost-free days in a year.

AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-TLR Timberlake Observatory for Wetland Restoration (TOWeR)

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-TLR Timberlake Observatory for Wetland Restoration (TOWeR). This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-TLR Timberlake Observatory for Wetland Restoration (TOWeR) produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - This tower is located in Timberlake Forest, a restored forested wetland located 4 km from Albermarle Sound on the North Carolina coast. The forest to the south of the tower had historically been ditched, drained and converted to agricultural land, and subsequently reforested with Black Gum and Cypress trees and naturally re-wetted in 2006. This southern region has a bottomland forest ecosystem which saw a large-scale succession event of pine trees following the reforestation efforts. The northern part of the forest had been ditched, but never drained or converted for other land uses. It is much wetter and more sparsely vegetated when compared to the southern region, and has a mixed bottomland forest and swamp ecosystem.

CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE FOR SPACE DATA SYSTEMS (CCSDS) WHITE PAPER ON THE USE OF BUNDLE PROTOCOL (BP) VERSION 7

This export is a technical white paper that recommends what is necessary to create a version (V7) DTN specification for the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) blue book and is based on IETF RFC BPBis.v26 (Note the original CCSDS standard as IRTF 5050). The considerations in this document follow the current CCSDS specification 734.2-B-1 (https://public.ccsds.org/Pubs/734x2b1.pdf) and is consistent with its intent and level of service. In it, are identified areas requiring updates and specification items that are essential to meet current minimums of capability.

Validation of IASI Satellite Ammonia Observations at the Pixel Scale Using In Situ Vertical Profiles

Satellite ammonia (NH 3 ) observations provide unprecedented insights into NH3 emissions, spatiotemporal variabilities and trends, but validation with in situ measurements remains lacking. Here, total columns from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) were intercompared to boundary layer NH 3 profiles derived from aircraft- and surface-based measurements primarily in Colorado, USA, in the summer of 2014. IASI-NH 3 version 3 near real-time data set compared well to in situ derived columns (windows ±15 km around centroid, ±1 h around overpass time) with a correlation of 0.58, a slope of 0.78 ± 0.14 and an intercept of 2.1 × 10 15 ±1.5 × 10 15 molecules cm −2 . Agreement degrades at larger spatiotemporal windows, consistent with the short atmospheric lifetime of NH 3 . We also examined IASI version 3R data, which relies on temperature retrievals from the ERA Reanalysis, and a third product generated using aircraft-measured temperature profiles. The overall agreement improves slightly for both cases, and neither is biased within their combined measurement errors. Thus, spatiotemporal averaging of IASI over large windows can be used to reduce retrieval noise. Nonetheless, sampling artifacts of airborne NH 3 instruments result in significant uncertainties of the in situ-derived columns. For example, large validation differences exist between ascent and descent profiles, and the assumptions of the free tropospheric NH 3 profiles used above the aircraft ceiling significantly impact the validation. Because short-lived species like NH 3 largely reside within the boundary layer with complex vertical structures, more comprehensive validation is needed across a wide range of environments. More accurate and widespread in situ NH 3 data sets are therefore required for improved validations of satellite products.

What (and How) MERRA-2 Reanalysis Data are Used in Applied Sciences

The Modern Era Retrospective-analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) is the global atmospheric data reanalysis for the satellite era produced by NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO), using the Goddard Earth Observing System Model (GEOS)version 5.12.4. The data are officially distributed by the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC). MERRA-2 data have been widely used by the Earth sciences and application community. Since MERRA-2 data were released in early 2016, the number of registered data users has grown steadily from 1,252 in 2016 to 6477 in 2020. By the end of October 2021, ~16 petabytes (over 360 million files) of data have been distributed to more than 18,900 users. Searching in Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/), we have found over 7,000 articles, published between January 2017 and May 2021, involving the use ofMERRA-2 data. The figure shows the numbers for various application areas in which theMERRA-2 data have been used, covering almost all of the application areas defined in NASA Applied Sciences (http://appliedsciences.nasa.gov). The largest number of articles are found in disaster research, with the subcategories ordered in flood, wildfires, hurricanes and cyclones, and other forms of severe weather. In this presentation, we will discuss the preliminary findings from a review of the selected literature that uses MERRA-2 data in applied sciences. The current analytic and interoperable data services at GES DISC are listed, such as the on-the-fly subset and analysis service, NASA Giovanni; THREDDS Data Server(TDS); and Python Jupyter notebooks. In addition, we will introduce two new services for supporting the open sciences: My Dashboard and Related Publications.

Documentation for the machine-readable character coded version of the SKYMAP catalogue

The SKYMAP catalogue is a compilation of astronomical data prepared primarily for purposes of attitude guidance for satellites. In addition to the SKYMAP Master Catalogue data base, a software package of data base management and utility programs is available. The tape version of the SKYMAP Catalogue, as received by the Astronomical Data Center (ADC), contains logical records consisting of a combination of binary and EBCDIC data. Certain character coded data in each record are redundant in that the same data are present in binary form. In order to facilitate wider use of all SKYMAP data by the astronomical community, a formatted (character) version was prepared by eliminating all redundant character data and converting all binary data to character form. The character version of the catalogue is described. The document is intended to fully describe the formatted tape so that users can process the data problems and guess work; it should be distributed with any character version of the catalogue.

AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-xRM NEON Rocky Mountain National Park, CASTNET (RMNP)

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xRM NEON Rocky Mountain National Park, CASTNET (RMNP). This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xRM NEON Rocky Mountain National Park, CASTNET (RMNP) produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - NEON's Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) tower stands 12 km south of Estes Park, Colorado, representing a growing mosaic of urban and exurban areas. While the property is owned by RMNP, it is not contiguous with the core park boundaries. As a mid-elevation site (2,750 m) on the east side of the Continental Divide, the site is aptly situated to investigate the chemical climate (i.e., pollution) generated along the Front Range as well as dust deposition produced and transported from the Great Basin to higher elevations. This is a particularly salient issue given recent estimates which project that an additional two million residents will inhabit the Front Range in twenty years.
