Advancing Neutrino Simulation Modeling with MARLEY: Insights from the NNSA-MSIIP Internship

Core-collapse supernovae are intense sources of tens-of-MeV neutrinos. However, there is no experimental data to validate the current event generator MARLEY (Model of Argon Reaction Low Energy Yields) that can model supernova neutrinos. To validate the model, I developed a new muon capture feature within the MARLEY simulation framework by coding key functions in C++, Python, and ROOT. I generated and analyzed one million simulated muon capture events and comparing the results to experimental data. To improve the model, I worked on optimizing the model’s parameters to improve its precision using statistical methods.

Ultrafast Light-Induced Magnetoelectric Effect in van der Waals Magnetic Semiconductor Heterostructures

Atomic-scale heterostructures of van der Waals (vdW) magnets and semiconductors provide a unique environment for exploring magnetic dynamics. In contrast to typical photothermal excitation of precessional magnetization dynamics by a pump laser pulse, we find that ultrafast optical excitation of a WS2/CrGeTe3 (CGT) bilayer produces an opposite sign of magnetic torque compared to an isolated CGT film. Experimental observations by time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) and theoretical analysis by density functional theory (DFT) and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) simulations support a mechanism in which charge transfer of photoexcited carriers across the interface alters the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which in turn generates a torque on the magnetic layer to trigger precessional magnetization dynamics. These results provide new avenues for ultrafast manipulation of magnetization in vdW heterostructures with type-II band alignments. Lastly, we show that optically-generated spin currents from WS2 into CGT can also trigger precessional dynamics via angular momentum transfer.

Scattering of Radio Frequency Waves by Density Filaments

The edge region and the scrape-off layer of magnetically confined fusion devices, like tokamaks and stellarators, are replete with turbulent plasma that is a mixture of coherent, blob or filament like, structures [1] and incoherent fluctuations [2]. The variation in the density due to turbulence can be comparable to or greater than the ambient density [2]. As part of an overall effort to optimize the efficiency of operation, radio frequency (RF) waves are commonly used for heating fusion plasmas and, in tokamaks, for generating plasma current needed for confinement and controlling instabilities. The RF waves are excited by antenna structures that are placed near the wall of a fusion device. In order to deliver energy and momentum to charged particles in the core of fusion plasmas, RF waves have to propagate through the turbulent plasma. In present fusion devices, the scrap-off layer and the edge plasma region is of the order of a few centimeters. In reactor type devices, like ITER, this region is expected to be of the order of tens of centimeters. Since the efficiency of operation of a fusion reactor is of prime importance, it is imperative that we understand the effect of turbulence on RF waves. The fluctuations in density lead to changes in the plasma permittivity. As in conventional electrodynamics, the propagation of RF waves through different dielectric media is subject to reflection, refraction, and diffraction. In this paper, we summarize our theoretical and computational studies on the propagation of RF waves through filamentary structures present in the scrape-off layer.

Lightweight heater generates high temperatures from low current

Double spiral molybdenum heater element uses low current, needs no insulation, and requires support only at the ends, which are also the power input points. Because there is no insulation or internal support necessary, the heater is lightweight. Its temperature potential will vary with its size and environment.

Fault determinations in electroexplosive devices by nondestructive techniques

Several nondestructive test techniques were developed for electroexplosive devices. The bridgewire responds, when pulsed with a safe level current, by generating a characteristic heating curve. The response is indicative of the electrothermal behavior of the bridgewire-explosive interface. Bridgewires which deviate from the characteristic heating curve were dissected and examined to determine the cause of the abnormality. Deliberate faults were fabricated into squibs. The relationship of the specific abnormality and the fault associated with it is demonstrated.

A test technique for measuring lightning-induced voltages on aircraft electrical circuits

The development of a test technique used for the measurement of lightning-induced voltages in the electrical circuits of a complete aircraft is described. The resultant technique utilizes a portable device known as a transient analyzer capable of generating unidirectional current impulses similar to lightning current surges, but at a lower current level. A linear relationship between the magnitude of lightning current and the magnitude of induced voltage permitted the scaling up of measured induced values to full threat levels. The test technique was found to be practical when used on a complete aircraft.

Environmental control system development for manned spacecraft 1960-1973

This paper provides an overview of the development of environmental revitalization techniques from their beginnings in caisson and submarine habitats, up to the present time. The use of CO2 adsorbents, such as LiOH and their application to the first U.S. manned spaceflight is described, together with the beginnings of the regenerable CO2 sorber technology using molecular sieves and its ultimate application to Skylab. The concepts and hardware systems used for atmospheric revitalization on all major U.S. ground-based manned tests is detailed, including CO2 reduction and O2 generation processes. Current research and development efforts are also outlined. The paper concludes with a detailed description of the recently completed SSP, the most advanced and complete ECS that has been fabricated to date.

Natural turbulence electrical power generator

An energy conversion apparatus is disclosed in which a stator, fixed to a watertight housing, is coupled to a rotor by a helical spring which suspends the rotor from the housing. Natural turbulence of a fluid, such as water or air, causes acceleration of the housing, and hence, acceleration of the stator. Inertia of the rotor, coupled to the stator through the helical spring and the housing, causes relative motion, both longitudinal and rotational, between the stator and the rotor. The rotational motion between the rotor, and the stator is used to generate electrical current.

Application of variable structure system theory to aircraft flight control

The current status of research on the application of variable structure system (VSS) theory to design aircraft flight control systems is summarized. Two aircraft types are currently being investigated: the Augmentor Wing Jet STOL Research Aircraft (AWJSRA), and AV-8A Harrier. The AWJSRA design considers automatic control of longitudinal dynamics during the landing phase. The main task for the AWJSRA is to design an automatic landing system that captures and tracks a localizer beam. The control task for the AV-8A is to track velocity commands in a hovering flight configuration. Much effort was devoted to developing computer programs that are needed to carry out VSS design in a multivariable frame work, and in becoming familiar with the dynamics and control problems associated with the aircraft types under investigation. Numerous VSS design schemes were explored, particularly for the AWJSRA. The approaches that appear best suited for these aircraft types are presented. Examples are given of the numerical results currently being generated.

Measuring the spacecraft and environmental interactions of the 8-cm mercury ion thrusters on the P80-1 mission

The subject interface measurements are described for the Ion Auxiliary Propulsion System (IAPS) flight test of two 8-cm thrusters. The diagnostic devices and the effects to be measured include: 1) quartz crystal microbalances to detect nonvolatile deposition due to thruster operation; 2) warm and cold solar cell monitors for nonvolatile and volatile (mercury) deposition; 3) retarding potential ion collectors to characterize the low energy thruster ionic efflux; and 4) a probe to measure the spacecraft potential and thruster generated electron currents to biased spacecraft surfaces. The diagnostics will also assess space environmental interactions of the spacecraft and thrusters. The diagnostic data will characterize mercury thruster interfaces and provide data useful for future applications.
