Criteria for selecting resin matrices for improved composite strength

Area under matrix of typical stress-strain diagram bounded by one percent strain is good index for priority assessment of matrix contribution to composite strength. Initial tangent modulus to stress-strain curve is useful parameter in translating matrix properties to composite properties.

Design criteria monograph for liquid propellant gas generators

Monograph reviews and assesses current design practices, and from them establishes firm guidance for achieving greater consistency in design, increased reliability in end product, and greater efficiency in design effort. Main emphasis of monograph is on bipropellant gas generators using hydrogen peroxide and hydrazine monopropellants.

Design criteria monograph on turbopump shafts and couplings

Monograph reviews and assesses current design practices, and considers all aspects of turbopump system shaft dynamics peculiar to and necessary to shaft and coupling design. Associated components (bearings, housing, etc.) that influence shaft or coupling design are treated to extent necessary to define that influence.

Design criteria monograph for valve components

Monograph treats valve design technology problems as they were solved in successful development of flightweight operational valves for liquid rocket systems. General practices for cleaning and contamination prevention are summarized. Balance of information is arranged by topic, since detail design requirements apply to most types of valves.

Environmental design criteria

Wind velocities at 140-200 km altitude were observed by a Low-G Accelerometer Calibration System (LOGACS) flown on an Agena satellite during a geomagnetic storm. An interesting wind reversal observed by the satellite at auroral latitudes is satisfactorily explained by the neutral air motion caused by the E x B drift deduced from the ground-based geomagnetic data recorded at stations near the meridian of the satellite orbit.

Failure criteria for viscoelastic materials

Research projects concerned with developing a theory of fracture of materials are discussed. The effects of the geometry of the structure and the loads acting on the structure as they influence the failure process are analyzed. The effects of the viscoelastic deformation characteristics of the bulk elastomer on failure behavior are examined. Additional material parameters which control the fracture process are identified.

Application of Markov chain theory to ASTP natural environment launch criteria at Kennedy Space Center

To aid the planning of the Apollo Soyuz Test Program (ASTP), certain natural environment statistical relationships are presented, based on Markov theory and empirical counts. The practical results are in terms of conditional probability of favorable and unfavorable launch conditions at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). They are based upon 15 years of recorded weather data which are analyzed under a set of natural environmental launch constraints. Three specific forecasting problems were treated: (1) the length of record of past weather which is useful to a prediction; (2) the effect of persistence in runs of favorable and unfavorable conditions; and (3) the forecasting of future weather in probabilistic terms.

Vertex potentials evoked during auditory signal detection - Relation to decision criteria

Vertex potentials were recorded from eight subjects performing in an auditory threshold detection task with rating scale responses. The amplitudes and latencies of both the N1 and the late positive (P3) components were found to vary systematically with the criterion level of the decision. These changes in the waveshape of the N1 component were comparable to those produced by varying the signal intensity in a passive condition, but the late positive component in the active task was not similarly related to the passively evoked P2 component. It was suggested that the N1 and P3 components represent distinctive aspects of the decision process, with N1 signifying the quantity of signal information received and P3 reflecting the certainty of the decision based upon that information.

Two effective feature selection criteria for multispectral remote sensing

Distance measures which are useful for feature selection are considered, giving attention to the divergence distance measure and the Jeffreys-Matusita (JM) distance. Experimental studies show that the JM-distance yields more reliable results than other distance measures. A number of questions which are not solved by the experiments are discussed. The investigation provides an explanation for previous observations that the JM-distance and a saturating transform of divergence are highly useful for feature selection in the multiclass case.

Rigid body mode pointing accuracy and stability criteria for an orbiting spacecraft

The effect of gravity gradient torque disturbances (which is an order of magnitude greater than the other torque disturbances and is sinusoidal with a frequency of two cycles per orbit) on pointing accuracy can be predicted very precisely. However, since the sensor noise such as star tracker and gyro inherent noise, is random, their effect can only be predicted statistically. The most common method used is computer simulation with appropriate sensor model and adjusting spacecraft control laws for minimum pointing error, as presented by Harris (1972). The general investigation outlined theoretically relates spacecraft controls to pointing accuracy in terms of the sensor noise power spectrum. The results are presented in graphical form.
