Correction to 'Recirculation of energetic particles in Jupiter's magnetosphere'

An error in Pioneer 11 data reduction software has, when present, caused a phase shift of 180 deg in the assignment of spacecraft roll angles. The corrected analysis of the pitch angle distributions of energetic particles in Jupiter's magnetosphere reveals significant proton anisotropies directed toward the planet in the southern hemisphere, contrary to the authors' (1975) original report. In the northern hemisphere, both proton and electron anisotropies are directed away from the planet, as reported previously. The revised data show that the claim of direct evidence for the hypothesis of recirculation of energetic particles in the Jovian magnetosphere is invalid. It is suggested that indirect evidence still supports the hypothesis, although the recirculation process must be weaker than originally envisioned and obscured by other processes.

Updated Z-corrections for 64-m DSS ground station delay calibrations

New Z-corrections which resulted from recent translator path delay calibrations made at DSS 14, 43, and 63 with newly developed DSN Portable Zero Delay Assemblies are presented. The test results indicate a successful transfer of technology from development to implementation and to the operations phase.

A simplified algorithm for correcting both errors and erasures of R-S codes

Using the finite field transform and continued fractions, a simplified algorithm for decoding Reed-Solomon (R-S) codes is developed to correct erasures caused by other codes as well as errors over the finite field GF (q(m), where q is a prime and m is an integer. Such an R-S decoder can be faster and simpler than a decoder that uses more conventional methods.

Evaluation and Analysis of Seasat a Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) Antenna Pattern Correction (APC) Algorithm

The accuracy of the SEASAT-A SMMR antenna pattern correction (APC) algorithm was assessed. Interim APC brightness temperature measurements for the SMMR 6.6 GHz channels are compared with surface truth derived sea surface temperatures. Plots and associated statistics are presented for SEASAT-A SMMR data acquired for the Gulf of Alaska experiment. The cross-track gradients observed in the 6.6 GHz brightness temperature data are discussed.

The list of the stars from the Two-micron sky survey: A preliminary catalog by G. N. Neugebauer et al (IRC), the identification of which is not correct

Two tables are published. The first presents the numbers of stars according to the Catalog IRC for which all or part of the identification with the Catalogs BS-HR, GC or DM is incorrect. The second table presents the numbers of stars in the IRC catalog, for which the identifications with variable stars printed with them are erroneous, whereas other identifications are usually correct.

Evaluation and analysis of Seasat-A Scanning multichannel Microwave radiometer (SMMR) Antenna Pattern Correction (APC) algorithm. Sub-task 2: T sub B measured vs. T sub B calculated comparison results

Interim Antenna Pattern Correction (APC) brightness temperature measurements for all ten SMMR channels are compared with calculated values generated from surface truth data. Plots and associated statistics are presented for the available points of coincidence between SMMR and surface truth measurements acquired for the Gulf of Alaska SEASAT Experiment. The most important conclusions of the study deal with the apparent existence of different instrument biases for each SMMR channel, and their variation across the scan.

Evaluation and analysis of Seasat-A scanning multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) Antenna Pattern Correction (APC) algorithm

The brightness temperature data produced by the SMMR final Antenna Pattern Correction (APC) algorithm is discussed. The algorithm consisted of: (1) a direct comparison of the outputs of the final and interim APC algorithms; and (2) an analysis of a possible relationship between observed cross track gradients in the interim brightness temperatures and the asymmetry in the antenna temperature data. Results indicate a bias between the brightness temperature produced by the final and interim APC algorithm.

Real-time onboard geometric image correction

A system to perform real time onboard geometric connection of LANDSAT D resolution satellite imagery is described. System requirements, algorithms, sensors, and other hardware components are defined. Feasibility of implementing the correction process is demonstrated using Kalman filter techniques to incorporate information from onboard ephemeris, attitude control, and ground control points. Random access sensor systems, such as charge injected devices and charge coupled devices are used to obtain pixel values at desired ground location, thus greatly reducing the data processing requirements.

Application of the minimum correlation technique to the correction of the magnetic field measured by magnetometers on spacecraft

Some aspects of the problem of obtaining precise, absolute determination of the vector of low magnetic fields existing in the interplanetary medium are addressed. In the case of a real S/C, there is always the possibility of a spurious field which includes the spacecraft residual field and/or possible field from the sensors, due to both electronic drifts or changes of the magnetic properties of the sensor core. These latter effects may occur during storage of the sensors prior to launching and/or in-flight. The reliability is demonstrated for a method which postulates that there should be no correlation between changes in measured field magnitude and changes in the measured inclination of the field with respect to any one of three fixed Cartesian component directions. Application of this minimum correlation technique to data from IMP-8 and Helios 1-2 shows it is appropriate for determination of the zero offset corrections of triaxial magnetometers. In general, a number of the order of 1000 consecutive data points is sufficient for a good determination.

Evaluation and Analysis of SEASAT-A Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SSMR) Antenna Pattern Correction (APC) Algorithm. Sub-task 4: Interim Mode T Sub B Versus Cross and Nominal Mode T Sub B

The brightness temperature data produced by the SMMR Antenna Pattern Correction algorithm are evaluated. The evaluation consists of: (1) a direct comparison of the outputs of the interim, cross, and nominal APC modes; (2) a refinement of the previously determined cos beta estimates; and (3) a comparison of the world brightness temperature (T sub B) map with actual SMMR measurements.

On-board image correction

This paper describes a processor architecture for performing on-board geometric and radiometric correction of Landsat imagery. The design uses a general purpose processor to calculate the distortion values at selected points in the image and a special purpose processor to resample (calculate distortion at each image point and interpolate the intensity) the sensor output data. A distinct special purpose processor is used for each spectral band. Because of the sensor's high output data rate, 80 M bit per second, the special purpose processors use a pipeline architecture. Sizing has been done of both the general and special purpose hardware.

Simplified algorithm for correcting both errors and erasures of Reed-Solomon codes

Using a finite-field transform, a simplified algorithm for decoding Reed-Solomon codes is developed to correct erasures as well as errors over the finite-field GF(q to the m power), where q is a prime and m is an integer. If the finite-field transform is a fast transform, this decoder can be faster and simpler than a decoder that uses more conventional methods.

Refraction corrections for surveying

Optical measurements of range and elevation angles are distorted by refraction of Earth's atmosphere. Theoretical discussion of effect, along with equations for determining exact range and elevation corrections, is presented in report. Potentially useful in optical site surveying and related applications, analysis is easily programmed on pocket calculator. Input to equation is measured range and measured elevation; output is true range and true elevation.
