Method of producing complex aluminum alloy parts of high temper, and products thereof

Fully annealed aluminum sheet is first stretch formed to the complex, doubly compound shape of a previously prepared forming die, e.g., an ejection seat blowout panel of a shuttlecraft. The part is then marked with a series of grid lines for monitoring later elongation. Thereafter it is solution heat treated and refrigerated to retard hardening. While still soft, it is stretched a second time on the same die to induce a modicum of work hardening, after which it is aged to the desired stress corrosion resistant temper, preferably the T8 level, to provide the desired hardness and stress corrosion resistance.

Automatic flight performance of a transport airplane on complex microwave landing system paths

During this demonstration the microwave landing system was utilized to provide the terminal configured vehicle B-737 airplane with guidance for automatic control on complex, curved descending paths with precision turns into short final approaches terminating in landing and roll-out, even when subjected to strong and gusty tail- and cross-wind components and severe wind shear. The data collected from more than fifty approach flights during the demonstration provided an opportunity to analyze airplane flight performance on a statistical basis rather than on a single flight record basis as is customarily done with limited data replication. Mean and standard deviation data are presented for approach flight path tracking parameters. In addition, the adverse wind conditions encountered during these flights are described using three-dimensional wind vector characteristics computed from the extensive on-board sensor data.

Strain gage calibration of a complex wing

Modern complex structural arrangements have complicated the task of measuring flight loads with calibrated strain gages. This paper examines the use of a relatively simple structural model to characterize the load responses of strain gages located on various spars of a delta wing. Strains measured during a laboratory load calibration of a wing structure are compared with calculations obtained from a simplified NASA structural analysis (NASTRAN) model. Calculated and measured influence coefficient plots that show the shear, bending, and torsion characteristics of typical strain-gage bridges are presented. Typical influence coefficient plots are given for several load equations to illustrate the derivation of the equations from the component strain-gage bridges. A relatively simple structural model was found to be effective in predicting the general nature of strain distributions and influence coefficient plots. The analytical processes are shown to be useful in obtaining a good load calibration. The analytical processes cannot, however, be used in lieu of an actual load calibration of an aircraft wing.

Instrumentation complex for Langley Research Center's National Transonic Facility

The instrumentation discussed in the present paper was developed to ensure reliable operation for a 2.5-meter cryogenic high-Reynolds-number fan-driven transonic wind tunnel. It will incorporate four CPU's and associated analog and digital input/output equipment, necessary for acquiring research data, controlling the tunnel parameters, and monitoring the process conditions. Connected in a multipoint distributed network, the CPU's will support data base management and processing; research measurement data acquisition and display; process monitoring; and communication control. The design will allow essential processes to continue, in the case of major hardware failures, by switching input/output equipment to alternate CPU's and by eliminating nonessential functions. It will also permit software modularization by CPU activity and thereby reduce complexity and development time.

Automatic flight performance of a transport airplane on complex microwave landing system paths

Essential characteristics of the U.S. microwave landing system (MLS) and the TCV B-737 aircraft used in flight demonstrations are described, with special emphasis on the analysis of the approach paths. MLS is used to provide the aircraft with guidance for automatic control on complex, curved descending paths with precision turns into short final approaches terminating in landing and rollout, even when subjected to strong and gusty tail- and cross-wind components and severe wind shear. The tracking performance achieved on these paths under MLS guidance is examined in detail, and the wind environment where the flights are conducted are quantified. The flights demonstrate the utility of the wide-area coverage of MLS for curved, descending paths commencing with a standard RNAV approach into a terminal area and continuation of this approach throughout the MLS coverage and onto the runway.

Simulation and display of macromolecular complexes

In association with an investigation of the interaction of proteins with DNA and RNA, an interactive computer program for building, manipulating, and displaying macromolecular complexes has been designed. The system provides perspective, planar, and stereoscopic views on the computer terminal display, as well as views for standard and nonstandard observer locations. The molecule or its parts may be rotated and/or translated in any direction; bond connections may be added or removed by the viewer. Molecular fragments may be juxtaposed in such a way that given bonds are aligned, and given planes and points coincide. Another subroutine provides for the duplication of a given unit such as a DNA or amino-acid base.

A fast D.F.T. algorithm using complex integer transforms

Winograd (1976) has developed a new class of algorithms which depend heavily on the computation of a cyclic convolution for computing the conventional DFT (discrete Fourier transform); this new algorithm, for a few hundred transform points, requires substantially fewer multiplications than the conventional FFT algorithm. Reed and Truong have defined a special class of finite Fourier-like transforms over GF(q squared), where q = 2 to the p power minus 1 is a Mersenne prime for p = 2, 3, 5, 7, 13, 17, 19, 31, 61. In the present paper it is shown that Winograd's algorithm can be combined with the aforementioned Fourier-like transform to yield a new algorithm for computing the DFT. A fast method for accurately computing the DFT of a sequence of complex numbers of very long transform-lengths is thus obtained.

A study of the IC 5146 dark cloud complex

The IC 5146 dark cloud complex has been studied in the infrared in order to identify and study associated young stellar objects. Most of the objects detected in the survey appear to be field stars, predominantly late-type giants. Three young objects were detected in the survey: the B0 star BD +46 deg 3474, the Ae star BD +46 deg 3471, and a previously unidentified object which appears to be a heavily obscured FU Orionis star. The properties of the last two objects are examined in detail, and an attempt is made to produce reasonable models for them. It is suggested that FU Orionis stars are binaries, and some consequences of this model are described. Photometry of the brighter stars in the IC 5146 cluster has been used to establish a distance to the cluster of 900 + or - 100 pc.

Retrieving the complex refractive index of atmospheric aerosols from ratios of solar spectral extinction measurements

The technique proposed by Fymat (1976) for retrieving the complex refractive index of atmospheric aerosols using narrowband spectral transmission ratios, taken within an overall narrow spectral interval, is investigated in the case of modelled polydispersions of rural, maritime-continental, maritime-sea spray and meteoric dust aerosols. It is confirmed that for not too broad size distributions most of the information comes from a narrow size range of 'active' aerosols so that, under these circumstances, the refractive index components can indeed be retrieved essentially independently of the size distribution. For 0.1% accurate data in three colors, the technique can provide the real and imaginary components of the index respectively within 0.07% and 0.3% accuracy.

A study of the Taurus dark cloud complex

A near-infrared survey has been conducted of nearly 20 square degrees of the Taurus dark cloud complex. Additional observations have been made of selected objects detected in this survey. These observations show that recently formed stars are spread throughout the cloud and that these stars are primarily T Tauri stars or T Tauri-like stars. Two luminous objects are identified embedded in the reflection nebulae IC 359 and IC 2087. A new Herbig-Haro object is also described. The reddening law of the dark cloud material is discussed; it does not appear to be unusual in the infrared. Comparison of the young stellar population in Taurus with that in Ophiuchus suggests that the star formation mechanisms in the two regions are qualitatively different

On the problem of constructing a modern, economic radiotelescope complex

Criteria for comparing and planning the technical and economic characteristics of large parabolic reflector antenna systems and other types used in radioastronomy and deep space communications are discussed. The experience gained in making and optimizing a series of highly efficient parabolic antennas in the USSR is reviewed. Several ways are indicated for further improving the complex characteristics of antennas similar to the original TNA-1500 64m radio telescope. The suggestions can be applied in planning the characteristics of radiotelescopes which are now being built, in particular, the TNA-8000 with a diameter of 128 m.

Fuel cell on-site integrated energy system parametric analysis of a residential complex

A parametric energy-use analysis was performed for a large apartment complex served by a fuel cell on-site integrated energy system (OS/IES). The variables parameterized include operating characteristics for four phosphoric acid fuel cells, eight OS/IES energy recovery systems, and four climatic locations. The annual fuel consumption for selected parametric combinations are presented and a breakeven economic analysis is presented for one parametric combination. The results show fuel cell electrical efficiency and system component choice have the greatest effect on annual fuel consumption; fuel cell thermal efficiency and geographic location have less of an effect.

Prospects of a mathematical theory of human behavior in complex man-machine systems tasks

A hierarchy of human activities is derived by analyzing automobile driving in general terms. A structural description leads to a block diagram and a time-sharing computer analogy. The range of applicability of existing mathematical models is considered with respect to the hierarchy of human activities in actual complex tasks. Other mathematical tools so far not often applied to man machine systems are also discussed. The mathematical descriptions at least briefly considered here include utility, estimation, control, queueing, and fuzzy set theory as well as artificial intelligence techniques. Some thoughts are given as to how these methods might be integrated and how further work might be pursued.

Analysis of a fuel cell on-site integrated energy system for a residential complex

Declining supplies of domestic oil and gas and the increased cost of energy resulted in a renewed emphasis in utilizing available resources in the most efficient manner possible. This, in turn, brought about a reassessment of a number of methods for converting fossil fuels to end uses at the highest practical efficiency. One of these is the on-site integrated energy system (OS/IES). This system provides electric power from an on-site power plant and recovers heat from the power plant that would normally be rejected to the environment. An OS/IES is potentially useful in any application that requires both electricity and heat. Several OS/IES are analyzed for a residential complex. The paper is divided into two sections; the first compares three energy supply systems, the second compares various designs for fuel cell OS/IES.

Design and testing of a redundant skewed inertial sensor complex for integrated navigation and flight control

Requirements for a redundant strapdown inertial sensor complex applied to V/STOL aircraft as developed by NASA are presented. Flight test data of a redundant, skewed axis strapdown inertial system are given, demonstrating the feasibility of the primary design aspects. This data consisted of parity equation responses through various flight conditions, showing residual noise levels on redundant gyro and accelerometer comparisons as a measure of minimum failure-level detectability, plus failure isolation and navigation performance through several simulated instrument failures.

Unsteady subsonic and supersonic potential aerodynamics for complex configurations

A recently developed general theory for unsteady compressible potential fluid dynamics for complex-configuration aircraft is reviewed. The method is based on a combination of the following techniques: Green's function method (to transform the differential equation into an integral differential-delay equation), finite element method (to transform the equation into a set of differential-delay equations in time), and the Laplace transform method (to transform the differential-delay equations into algebraic equations).

Remote sensing of environmental particulate pollutants - Optical methods for determinations of size distribution and complex refractive index

A unifying approach, based on a generalization of Pearson's differential equation of statistical theory, is proposed for both the representation of particulate size distribution and the interpretation of radiometric measurements in terms of this parameter. A single-parameter gamma-type distribution is introduced, and it is shown that inversion can only provide the dimensionless parameter, r/ab (where r = particle radius, a = effective radius, b = effective variance), at least when the distribution vanishes at both ends. The basic inversion problem in reconstructing the particle size distribution is analyzed, and the existing methods are reviewed (with emphasis on their capabilities) and classified. A two-step strategy is proposed for simultaneously determining the complex refractive index and reconstructing the size distribution of atmospheric particulates.
