Theoretical frameworks for testing relativistic gravity. IV - A compendium of metric theories of gravity and their post-Newtonian limits.

Metric theories of gravity are compiled and classified according to the types of gravitational fields they contain, and the modes of interaction among those fields. The gravitation theories considered are classified as (1) general relativity, (2) scalar-tensor theories, (3) conformally flat theories, and (4) stratified theories with conformally flat space slices. The post-Newtonian limit of each theory is constructed and its Parametrized Post-Newtonian (PPN) values are obtained by comparing it with Will's version of the formalism. Results obtained here, when combined with experimental data and with recent work by Nordtvedt and Will and by Ni, show that, of all theories thus far examined by our group, the only currently viable ones are general relativity, the Bergmann-Wagoner scalar-tensor theory and its special cases (Nordtvedt; Brans-Dicke-Jordan), and a recent, new vector-tensor theory by Nordtvedt, Hellings, and Will.

State of the art in the detection of intelligent extraterrestrial signals.

Recent progress in ideas of how signals that might represent electromagnetic radiations of intelligent civilizations elsewhere in the galaxy is summarized. Project Cyclops, carried out at Ames Research Center under the auspices of NASA and the American Society for Engineering Education, determined that microwaves are superior to lasers for interstellar signalling. It is felt that the band lying between the resonances of the two dissociation products of water, the hydrogen line at 1420 MHz, and the first hydroxyl line at 1662 MHz, is the most suitable. Phased antenna arrays of perhaps 1000 to 10,000 dishes of 100 m diam would be required. It is considered that a list of likely stars should be compiled, and these should be searched one at a time. Procedures for combing the spectrum are outlined.

Computers formed by the problems rather than problems deformed by the computers.

Description of an approach to computer programming which tries to minimize the time required for retranslation from the computer language into the language of the original process. A notion of a programmable network is introduced which allows the abstract machines that are a model of the processes in the user's mind to be put into a rigorous and simple form. Each process is then modeled as a particular finite-state machine, a circulating page loose system being employed as an architecture for implementing these finite-state machines. An experiment is discussed in which the use of abstract machines as a language for modeling processes, in conjunction with the use of a self-organizing computer, decreases user effort, eliminates the need for compilation, facilitates debugging, and decreases computer time.

An interdisciplinary analysis of ERTS data for Colorado mountain environments using ADP techniques. An early analysis of ERTS-1 data

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. The principal problem encountered has been the lack of good quality, small scale baseline photography for the test areas. Analysis of the ERTS-1 data for the San Juan Site will emphasize development of a preliminary spectral classification defining grass cover categories, and then selection of subframes for intensive investigation of the forestry, geologic, and hydrologic properties of the area. Primary work has been devoted to the selection and digitization of areas for topographic modeling, and compilation of ground based data maps necessary for computer analysis. Study effort has emphasized: geomorphic features; macro-vegetation; micro-vegetation; snow-hydrology; insect/disease damage; and blow-down. Analysis of a frame of the Lake Texoma area indicates a great deal of potential in the analysis and interpretation of ERTS imagery. Preliminary results of investigations of geologic, forest, range, cropland, and water resources of the area are summarized.

Explicit expressions of the potential and its derivatives at the origin in terms of the scattering data

The quantum mechanical theory of scattering of a particle by a spherically symmetrical potential is presented. As in the inverse scattering problem, the input of the calculation is the scattering and bound-state data, and the output is data on the potential. The results discussed are explicit expressions for the values of the potential and its derivatives at the origin in terms of the scattering and boundstate data. Various methods to obtain these results are outlined. The presentation is aimed at introducing these various approaches. The simplest scattering problem (nonrelativistic S-wave scattering on a holomorphic potential without bound states) is used as the basis for discussion, and technicalities are omitted whenever possible without loss of clarity. A complete compilation is given of the results obtained to date in this field, including the treatment of higher partial waves and the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations.

Methods for reducing blade passing frequency noise generated by rotor-wake - stator interaction

A theoretical model for the generation of blade-passage noise caused by the interaction of rotor wakes with the downstream stator blades in a fan stage has been compiled. This model has combined a description of the rotor wake based on existing experimental correlations with an existing theory for the response of the stator blades to those wakes. This model of the interaction-caused blade-passage noise has been used to examine some effects of blade geometry and flow conditions on the noise generated. A set of significant parameters has been identified to reduce this interaction-caused blade-passage frequency noise. A redesign of an existing fan with the use of these concepts has produced a theoretical noise reduction of more than 7 decibels.

Land use mapping and modelling for the Phoenix quadrangle

The author has identified the following significant results. Experimentation with 70mm squares cut from ERTS-1 9.5 inch MSS positive transparencies in an I2S color additive viewer, a Richardson film production viewer at 10X magnification, and in a microfiche viewer at 12X and 18X magnification has indicated that band 5 photography provides the most useful interpretable data. In the I2S viewer high intensities of blue and red light in bands 4 and 6 respectively enhance faint vegetation patterns not easily detectable. Slides produced from 35mm color transparencies made by photographing the I2S viewing screen are suitable visual aids for use during presentation. Interpretation of MSS transparencies allowed compilation of a map of land use change in the Phoenix quadrangle.

Density and optical properties of SPARCS plumes

Propellant gases emitted by attitude control systems such as SPARCS (Solar Pointing Aerobee Rocket Control System) and possible interference with experiments aboard the payloads are discussed. The optical properties of seven actual and potential gases emitted by propellant systems (CF4, N2H4, NH3, N2, CO2, Ar, and He) are presented. A compilation of absorption coefficients from 1 Angstrom to 50 microns and a summary of fluorescent spectra and efficiencies are provided. Since Freon-14 (CF4) is of primary importance to SPARCS, an experimental search for the fluorescent spectrum of CF4 was performed by exciting the gas with 920 Angstrom UV photons. The result was compared with an electron impact induced spectrum of CF4, and conclusions drawn about the nature of the radiating species. A detailed study of the CF4 flow fields and plume densities for typical SPARCS controlled payloads was made using gas dynamic codes which included the effects of vehicle shading and condensation. The importance of the optical properties of CF4 plumes was investigated and it is concluded that absorption is negligible but fluoresence may be significant in some cases.

A Computer Aided Broad Band Impedance Matching Technique Using a Comparison Reflectometer

An improved broadband impedance matching technique was developed. The technique is capable of resolving points in the waveguide which generate reflected energy. A version of the comparison reflectometer was developed and fabricated to determine the mean amplitude of the reflection coefficient excited at points in the guide as a function of distance, and the complex reflection coefficient of a specific discontinuity in the guide as a function of frequency. An impedance matching computer program was developed which is capable of impedance matching the characteristics of each disturbance independent of other reflections in the guide. The characteristics of four standard matching elements were compiled, and their associated curves of reflection coefficient and shunt susceptance as a function of frequency are presented. It is concluded that an economical, fast, and reliable impedance matching technique has been established which can provide broadband impedance matches.

Regional Land Use Mapping: the Phoenix Pilot Project

The Phoenix Pilot Program has been designed to make effective use of past experience in making land use maps and collecting land use information. Conclusions reached from the project are: (1) Land use maps and accompanying statistical information of reasonable accuracy and quality can be compiled at a scale of 1:250,000 from orbital imagery. (2) Orbital imagery used in conjunction with other sources of information when available can significantly enhance the collection and analysis of land use information. (3) Orbital imagery combined with modern computer technology will help resolve the problem of obtaining land use data quickly and on a regular basis, which will greatly enhance the usefulness of such data in regional planning, land management, and other applied programs. (4) Agreement on a framework or scheme of land use classification for use with orbital imagery will be necessary for effective use of land use data.

Microbiological sampling of spacecraft cabling, antennas, solar panels and thermal blankets

Sampling procedures and techniques described resulted from various flight project microbiological monitoring programs of unmanned planetary spacecraft. Concurrent with development of these procedures, compatibility evaluations were effected with the cognizant spacecraft subsystem engineers to assure that degradation factors would not be induced during the monitoring program. Of significance were those areas of the spacecraft configuration for which special handling precautions and/or nonstandard sample gathering techniques were evolved. These spacecraft component areas were: cabling, high gain antenna, solar panels, and thermal blankets. The compilation of these techniques provides a historical reference for both the qualification and quantification of sampling parameters as applied to the Mariner Spacecraft of the late 1960's and early 1970's.
