The Cherenkov Telescope Array Will Test Whether Pulsars Generate the Galactic Center Gamma-Ray Excess

The GeV-scale gamma-ray excess observed from the region surrounding the Galactic Center has been interpreted as either the products of annihilating dark matter particles, or as the emission from a large population of faint and centrally-located millisecond pulsars. If pulsars are responsible for this signal, they should also produce detectable levels of TeV-scale emission. In this study, we employ a template-based analysis of simulated data in an effort to assess the ability of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect or constrain the presence of this emission, providing a new and powerful means of testing whether millisecond pulsars are responsible for the observed excess. We find that after even a relatively brief observation of the Inner Galaxy, CTA will be able to definitively detect this TeV-scale emission, or rule out pulsars as the source of the Galactic Center Gamma-Ray Excess.

Phase-wrapping method for beam steering in optical phased arrays

A method and apparatus are provided for controlling the phase shifts produced in a binary corporate tree network of the kind, e.g., that can drive a phased array for steering an optical beam. The method employs a novel phase-wrapping technique in which an entire layer of the binary tree is disabled when the phase added in that layer reaches 2π. With that technique, it is possible to economize on electrical control lines and on the use of electric power, while still maintaining the ability to produce arbitrary phases at the output of the tree network.

Predicting Wind Loading and Instability in Solar Tracking PV Arrays

Wind loading and the fluctuating pressure loads it creates on PV panel surfaces are associated with multiple degradation mechanisms and failures. Modest wind speeds create reversing loads that can initiate cell cracks and weather cracked cells. Stronger wind speeds and extreme weather events can lead to larger scale forces and the aerodynamic instability known as torsional galloping. All these effects are dependent on the complex coupling between wind speed, panel orientation, and a myriad of other hardware and site-specific factors. In this work, we present the latest developments from our work to build an open-source, high-performance computing (HPC) fluid dynamics solver to predict and mitigate these effects. This simulation package allows users to easily specify different array layouts, solar-tracking angles, panel geometries, and weather conditions before automatically generating a refined computational mesh and solving for the unsteady loading on each panel surface. Small domains (e.g., a single panel row in isolation) can be solved on a modern laptop, while larger domains or very high-fidelity studies can be solved on distributed or HPC resources with minimal modifications to the underlying problem specification. We present preliminary case studies obtained using this simulation package and highlight how increased wind speeds combined with sub-optimal tracking angles can exacerbate degradation drivers.

Large active-area superconducting microwire detector array with single-photon sensitivity in the near-infrared

Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) are the highest-performing technology for time-resolved single-photon counting from the UV to the near-infrared. The recent discovery of single-photon sensitivity in micrometer-scale superconducting wires is a promising pathway to explore for large active area devices with application to dark matter searches and fundamental physics experiments. We present 8-pixel $1 mm^2$ superconducting microwire single photon detectors (SMSPDs) with $1\,\mathrm{\mu m}$-wide wires fabricated from WSi and MoSi films of various stoichiometries using electron-beam and optical lithography. Devices made from all materials and fabrication techniques show saturated internal detection efficiency at 1064 nm in at least one pixel, and the best performing device made from silicon-rich WSi shows single-photon sensitivity in all 8 pixels and saturated internal detection efficiency in 6/8 pixels. This detector is the largest reported active-area SMSPD or SNSPD with near-IR sensitivity published to date, and the first report of an SMSPD array. By further optimizing the photolithography techniques presented in this work, a viable pathway exists to realize larger devices with $cm^2$-scale active area and beyond.

Wideband radial line slot array antenna

An antenna includes a waveguide defined by a gap between a backplane with radial support ribs and a facesheet, a teardrop-shaped feed pin at a center of the backplane, and a foam spacer between the backplane and facesheet. An outward facing side of the facesheet includes thermal paint. The facesheet includes pairs of through-hole slots for releasing portions of a wave of radiation in the waveguide to generate a transmit-beam or to receive the receive-beam to generate the wave of radiation. The pairs may be disposed as a spiral array about a center of the facesheet. Each of the pairs may include first and second slots. A length of the second slot is oriented approximately perpendicular to a length of the first slot. Dispositions of the slots are set by a computer process. The dispositions optimize a trade-off between transmit and receive gains.

Metasurface-assisted 3D beam shaping using array of scatterers

Cascaded metasurfaces can control the phase, amplitude and polarization of an electromagnetic beam, shaping it in three dimensional configuration not achievable with other methods. Each cascaded metasurface has dielectric or metallic scatterers arranged in a period array. The shape of the scatterers determines the three dimensional configuration of the output beam and is determined with iterative calculations through computational simulations.

Calculation of Hydraulic Conductivity for a Porous Medium with Staggered Array of Solid Grains - 20087

For a porous medium with periodic array of solid grains. the flow of an incompressible viscous fluid in the pore space is considered with an aim of calculating the permeability of the medium. The solid grains are of ellipsoidal shape. For this purpose, a unit-cell boundary-value problem (Stokes problem) is solved numerically. With the assumption of periodicity of the medium structure and the fluid properties (in fact constant), the flow field and pressure distributions are determined numerically with inertial effects ignored. By applying the theory of homogenization to the viscous flow through pore space, a microscale boundary-value problem is defined. After solving the problem, the permeability is determined by taking the micro-cell average of the velocity components, Various porous structures are chosen to allow a wide range of porosity values. The permeability increases mildly for porosity values in the lower range. But it increases sharply for porosity values in the upper range of the porosity. The permeability of the present study agrees with the Kozeny-Carman relation excellently for smaller porosity. Certain discrepancy between the calculated permeability in this study and the Kozeny-Carman relation appears and increases with porosity for larger porosity. It is believed that the discrepancy is due to the replacement of the pores by a bundle of capillaries, which is unrealistic, in the Kozeny-Carman relation. (authors)

Analysis of Vertical Bifacial Photovoltaic Array Performance

Agrivoltaics is a developing technology where solar panels are installed within farm fields to get a dual-use out of the same plot of land. There is still much engineering work to do to maximize the electrical output of these arrays without sacrificing too much space or impeding the growth of crops. Vertical bifacial modules have potential for this purpose, and our model examines how much power can be generated with different configurations.

Field Programmable Gate Array Data Capture for Control Systems

Some Industrial Control Systems (ICS) networks are based on protocols such as Serial and Industrial Ethernet. These protocols currently have no existing cybersecurity monitoring tools, leaving a large gap in the cyber defense of critical infrastructure. In order to analyze such ICS traffic, it is first necessary to implement methods of capturing the ICS data. Whereas traditional methods of analyzing data would use microprocessors, the nature of high-speed analog data can be difficult to implement on such a versatile processor, as they are rather inefficient for doing a single task. Whereas Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) provide an adequate tool in analyzing high speed data, as despite the lack of program versatility, Programmable Logic can implement a solution with minimal clock cycles, allowing time for each new packet of data to be captured before a new data sample is taken.

Non-Destructive Plutonium Assay in Pyroprocessing Bulk Materials with a 3D Boron-Coated-Straw Detector Array

Assessment of plutonium content through all the processing steps is needed and is a challenging task. While several destructive assay methods have been developed for nuclear material accountability, a nondestructive assay (NDA) system for the assessment of plutonium in bulk materials is still needed. This system should withstand pyroprocessing harsh environments and have consistent sensitivity and accuracy despite different fuel form factors. We aim to enable the accurate assessment of the plutonium content of nuclear material during pyroprocessing to improve the separation process and enhance its proliferation resistance. We plan to achieve this goal by developing and demonstrating a new 3D boron-coated-straw neutron detector array (3D-BCSDA) with high efficiency and spatial resolution.
