Evaluation of tactual displays for flight control

Manual tracking experiments were conducted to determine the suitability of tactual displays for presenting flight-control information in multitask situations. Although tracking error scores are considerably greater than scores obtained with a continuous visual display, preliminary results indicate that inter-task interference effects are substantially less with the tactual display in situations that impose high visual scanning workloads. The single-task performance degradation found with the tactual display appears to be a result of the coding scheme rather than the use of the tactual sensory mode per se. Analysis with the state-variable pilot/vehicle model shows that reliable predictions of tracking errors can be obtained for wide-band tracking systems once the pilot-related model parameters have been adjusted to reflect the pilot-display interaction.

The Earth and Ocean Physics Applications Program (EOPAP). Ocean dynamics program

SEASAT-A is a research oriented program consisting of a spacecraft, precision ground tracking systems, and data processing and modelling capabilities that address both scientific and application programs problems in ocean surface dynamics for the EOPAP program. An array of active radar and passive microwave and infrared instruments allows for quantitative measurements of oceanic, atmospheric, and geodetic parameters under stormy wind and wave conditions, as well as over regions lying under a cloud cover.

A comprehensive two-way Doppler noise model for near-real-time validation of Doppler data

Doppler noise generated within the tracking system is modeled as a function of the dominant variable-Doppler sample interval. Additionally, the relationship between media noise and Doppler samples interval is empirically determined, and the ratio of media noise for S- and X-band downlinks is solved for. These functional relationships are incorporated into the previous media noise modeling to obtain a comprehensive two-way Doppler noise model.

Reliability measurement during software development

During the development of data base software for a multi-sensor tracking system, reliability was measured. The failure ratio and failure rate were found to be consistent measures. Trend lines were established from these measurements that provided good visualization of the progress on the job as a whole as well as on individual modules. Over one-half of the observed failures were due to factors associated with the individual run submission rather than with the code proper. Possible application of these findings for line management, project managers, functional management, and regulatory agencies is discussed. Steps for simplifying the measurement process and for use of these data in predicting operational software reliability are outlined.

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

The contribution of the Goddard Space Flight Center to the National Geodetic Satellite Program is reported. All of the major types of tracking systems, including those employing optical, electronic, range-and-range-rate, and laser technologies, which were developed and operated by Goddard, are described. The MINITRACK data were used to derive geodetic results. The methods used for the analysis of these data are presented.

Reliability measurement during software development

Measurement of software reliability was carried out during the development of data base software for a multi-sensor tracking system. Every run made during this project was scored as success or failure, and supporting data were collected on forms for further analysis. The failure ratio (number of failures per calendar interval divided by total number of runs) and failure rate (number of failures divided by CPU time for the interval) were found to be consistent measures, on a month-to-month basis as well as from module to module, and therefore considered valid indicators of reliability in this environment. Trend lines could be established from these measurements that provide good visualization of the progress on the job as a whole as well as on individual modules. Over one-half of the observed failures were due to factors associated with the specific run submission rather than with the code proper.

Lageos orbital acquisition and initial assessment

Orbital elements for the satellite Lageos, launched on 4 May, 1976, were generated through use of Baker-Nunn camera data. Camera observations of the apogee kick motor provided the node and perigee, the inclination and the eccentricity, while the mean anomaly and the mean motion were determined from observations of the satellite. During the month following the launch, the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and NASA laser tracking networks acquired about 110 satellite passes. The laser tracking system has been applied to a variety of orbital configurations, including elevation angles below 20 deg. Single-pass range residuals versus time were plotted for 741 laser observations of the satellite; the standard deviation of the total system noise was found to be 7 cm.

Quick-look decoding schemes for DSN convolutional codes

Decoding schemes are proposed for the tracking systems of the galileo project. Quick look decoding schemes requiring only shift registers are given for the DSN (7, 1/2) and (7, 1/3) convolutional codes. These schemes are used when the communication channel is error free. The schemes decode the data, symbol errors, and the lack of node syncronization.

A numerical model for low-latitude ionospheric TEC

A numerical model of total electron content (TEC) at low latitudes has been constructed from the Faraday rotation data recorded at a number of locations in India during the period Oct. 1975-July 1976 when the geostationary satellite ATS-6 was located at 35 deg E. In all, 36 coefficients for each season are required to represent the model. The model can be used for satellite tracking systems in estimating quickly the range, range rate and angular refraction errors. The present model is an improvement over the previously constructed model based on orbiting satellite data.
